i switched from the Canon XTI to the XSi, 10mp to 12 and 3 to 3.5 fps, doesnt seem like much, but the pics are outstanding, and all of my lenses work with all of my canons, and canon has a VAST selection of lenses, the kit with the lens is on sale at circuit city for $750, down from $900. also find on ebay for $650-750ish as well, the kit lens on the XSi is good to have, it has IS, the kit lens on the XTi, isnt all that great same lens without IS. and the XSi has SD memory instead of the ancient compact flash the XTi has... ill likely be selling my xti soon. and get a 2nd XSi for the wife.

from the bleechers in G'Town over a few rows, across the walkwats, over the grass to the closest sideline..

with a shaky hand and a 70-300 IS USM lens B)

I don't think you can go wrong if you stick to Canon or Nikon (which is the way I went). My best suggestion is to get a chance to get them in your hands, and see what feels best. Both brands make great cameras. Finding what you're going to be most comfortable handling is as important as anything. It's one of the reasons I went with the D80. The D40/40x/60 are nice cameras, but they felt really small in my hands. And they would have likely felt out of balance, imo, with a larger lens on them as well.

It also has 11-point AF, which was a nice upgrade from the 3-point AF of the 40/40x/60.

There are several options available if you want a kit lens. $630 with the basic 18-55, $869 with the upgraded 18-55 (with VR and ED glass), or $986 with the 18-135mm, a pretty decent every day lens with everything from wideangle to decent zoom capability. (pricing from amazon.com)

I'm sure you'll enjoy whichever camera you choose. I can't wait to take mine on vacation in a couple of months to see what I can do with this thing!

Can't say I blame you there. The zoom is great for sports and wildlife, but the wide angle lenses are hard to beat for just about anything else.

Of course, with my new toy, I no longer have to choose. 18-200mm is good for just about everything. B)

How is the lens selection on the Nikons? The reason I ask is there is a local thing here in DC called Washington Photo Safari where a professional photographer in the area teaches on the D80.

There are a pretty good selection available. Some are less expensive, some get damn pricey.

I am in *love* with my new lens. It costs about $700 on Amazon, but it is a killer all in one lens. Does everything from wide angle (18mm) to telephoto zoom (200mm). I had a combination of two lenses previously, and I got frustrated with having to change lenses. I missed a pic of a cockatoo when the Mrs and I were staying in a cabin in the valley, and I am still pissed off about it. Had the wrong lens on the camera, and by the time I got it switched, he flew away. Sucked big time. I'm not exactly a bird watcher, but when something like this just happens to cross your path, and you can't take advantage of it, it's enough to drive you effin batty.

The bird looked like this, fwiw.

I prefered the D80 for its size, 11-point AF, gridlines built in to the eyepiece to help you keep your images level with the horizon, and the improved image quality from the entry level cameras. It originally went for about $2k with the 18-135 lens, but you should be able to get it for about half that price now.

hope this helps..

That means you will have to read instructions and men aren't supposed to do that. :D :D

so Jamie, if you don't mind, what did it all cost? I'm looking at Nikon and Cannon as well. I have some extra Student Loan cash and I think that would
be a nice investment for classes.... *giggle

I grabbed the Canon EOS Rebel T1i and couldn't be happier. It came as a kit with 18-55mm and 55-250mm lenses and since then I bought a 50mm F1.8 lens for it. I'm really enjoying this.
