Ever since the Bengals signed Tank Johnson, we've been keeping our eye on (meaning I'm preaching from my soapbox) people's reactions while it relates to a long-forgotten issue with players being arrested. The issue before was players already on roster, which by default threw Johnson and Cedric Benson under the same umbrella because of the past issues -- which were mostly (but not totally) DUIs, caught with pot and the such.

In 2006 (chart after the jump), the Bengals had eight different players that were arrested in some form with ten different incidents. Since then, they've had three (Quincy Wilson for disorderly conduct, A.J. Nicholson with misdemeanor assault and Chris Henry for assault and disorderly conduct). In Henry's and Wilson's case, the charges were dropped and Nicholson was released. In fact, since 2006, when all the "issues" were picking up mainstream media momentum, only two players remain with the team (Henry and Frostee Rucker).

A reader sent me the link that details arrested NFL players. Doing his own research, the reader said that 30 NFL franchises have had players arrested since the last time any Bengals player got in trouble with the law. That includes seven in Jacksonville and five in New York (Giants). You guys can make more analysis if you want by clicking here and defending your Bengals. (Note: I didn't notice Ahmad Brooks on this list.)

I apologize to those of you that are tired of hearing about this, or just don't care.
Actually, I didn't go through the list, but Chris Henry was arrested March 31st, 2008.
So it has been over a year since any player that was with the Bengals at the time,
has been arrested. Still, just a quick glance of that link above shows that the Browns,
Ravens, Stealers, Giants, Chiefs, Jaguars, Broncos, Redskins, Bills, 49ers, Chargers,
Saints, Rams, Panthers, Jets, Falcons, Raiders, Colts, Texans, Bucs, Packers, Seahawks,
Patriots, Titans, Cardinals, Bears and Dolphins have all (some teams multiple players)
arrested since Henry was arrested over a year ago.

That's 27 teams since last year, that have had more players arrested than the Bengals.

News item 2: The Bengals have signed Tank Johnson, who has been on a first-name basis with trouble. Johnson joins a roster that includes at least a half-dozen players who have had recent run-ins with the law, including Chris Henry and Cedric Benson.

KC Joyner, the Football Scientist, sent along an e-mailed excerpt of an article he wrote on the Bengals in Scientific Football 2007. He said it seemed appropriate. (KC’s latest book, Scientific Football 2009, is available for pre-order.)

MARVIN LEWIS’ HOME FOR WAYWARD FOOTBALL PLAYERS

Dr. Phil has a saying that I am fond of: You train people how to treat you. For example, if you are the type of person who enjoys being a follower, you will inevitably let the people in your life be your leaders. If you are the type of person who likes counseling people that are feeling down, the odds are that your wife, husband or kids are going to feel down quite often, if for no other reason than to get your attention.

It works that way for football coaches as well. Marvin Lewis strikes me as a man who has a soft spot for being a father figure to players. I also believe that Lewis subscribes to the philosophy that people are generally good. The combination of these two traits means that he enjoys mentoring younger players and wants to believe that, with help and support, any player can be turned around. Because of this, Lewis tends to gravitate towards players other people would view as risks.

If Lewis’ heart is in the right place, his approach to these players could be creating something of a vicious cycle. If you are a parent, you can relate to this. You want your kids to behave and do what they are supposed to do. They want to keep you happy but when they behave, you don’t pay them as much attention as you do when they aren’t behaving. They quickly figure out that the way to get your attention all the time is to act up all of the time.

Some of Lewis’ players may have a similar mindset. I think they know that the best way to get his attention is to appeal to his mentoring side, so they end up doing things that they shouldn’t in order to get his father-figure side to come out. Mind you, I don’t just mean the things that happen off of the field, and I don’t mean this as an excuse for the off-field incidents. I simply offer it as a probable explanation for why this team is so volatile.
The irony I was referring too was when I opened the main forum and saw this thread with the SERIOUSLY!!!?? thread right below it.

Does anybody ever read the New York Times anymore? It's the biggest piece of shit leftwing liberal publication out there and I can't wait until it goes bankrupt. Not only do they engage in gross exaggeration, but they no longer even pretend to be objective.

And where were they when their hometown boy Plaxico was blowing a hole in his leg at a nightclub? The New York Times and everyone of their goddam employees can all get fucked.

The point is that the Bengals have the most arrests since the year 2000. Something like 26 arrests.

Do you think Hall will get susspended for any games?

Just a bunch of racist cops. :halfninja:

And it really has nothing to do with anything.
The Conduct Policy wasn't in effect until 2007.

That article is fucking retarded especially coming from a new york writer. To suggest grown men go out and act like idiots because they crave individual attention from Lewis is laughable.
In trouble: NFL arrest overview
2:00 a.m. April 11, 2009

The following figures are based on 451 NFL player arrests or major citations compiled since 2000 using this database.

Most incidents by position:

Defensive backs: 111

Wide receivers: 79

Running back: 53

Fewest incidents by position:

Kickers/punters: 9

Quarterbacks: 11

Offensive line: 49

Teams with most incidents since 2000:

Minnesota: 29

Cincinnati: 29

Jacksonville: 25

Teams with fewest incidents since 2000:

St. Louis/Philadelphia: 6

Since the NFL toughened the personal conduct policy in April 2007, 12 players have been suspended (with number of games):

--Buffalo RB Marshawn Lynch (3)

--Denver WR Brandon Marshall (1) --Minnesota OL Bryant McKinnie (4)

--Miami DL Fred Evans (2)

--Tennessee/Dallas CB Pacman Jones (22)

--Atlanta QB Michael Vick (indefinite)

--Chicago DL Tank Johnson (8)

--Tennessee LB Robert Reynolds (2)

--Cincinnati WR Chris Henry (12)

--Kansas City RB Larry Johnson (1)

--Seattle DL Rocky Bernard (1)

--Oakland CB Fabian Washington (1)

Of 451 incidents since 2000, 128 were drunken-driving charges. Most common NFL charges:

DUIs – 28 percent

Disorderly conduct/assaults/fighting: 21 percent

Domestic violence-related: 15 percent

Drug-related: 13 percent

Gun-related: 8 percent

Of the 451 incidents, the Union-Tribune could find legal resolutions to 354. Many of the others are still pending. Of those resolved:

67 percent: Convictions, plea deals, diversion programs.

27 percent: Dropped without penalty

6 percent: Acquitted

The NFL still is better behaved than American society:

NFL: roughly one arrest per 47 players per year since 2000, including injured reserve lists, according to the database.

U.S. population: one arrest per 21 people per year (around 4,800 arrests per 100,000 inhabitants), according to the FBI.

Note: The Union-Tribune reviewed hundreds of news reports and public records since 2000 to compile an unofficial list of 451 arrests or major citations. The list cannot be considered comprehensive in part because some incidents may not have been reported. Increased media coverage of incidents also probably accounts for more incidents listed in recent years. The list includes players who were in the league at the time of their arrests, including practice squads and players on injured reserve.

Like the NFL rate, the FBI rate counts one arrest for each separate instance in which a person is arrested, cited, or summoned for an offense. Statistically, the best comparison is with a similar peer group. In the NFL's case, this generally would be males under 33 with some college making six-figure salaries. However, such specific data does not exist for comparison in society.
Cleveland police use stun gun on Bills DB Whitner, arrest him in melee

Associated Press

Buffalo Bills defensive back Donte Whitner was shocked with a stun gun and arrested by officers trying to control a rowdy crowd outside a Cleveland nightclub, police said.

Whitner, 23, was jailed early Saturday on suspicion of aggravated disorderly conduct and resisting arrest, Lt. Thomas Stacho said. Whitner was released later Saturday and hadn't been charged, police said. A prosecutor was to decide whether to file charges.

Police shocked and handcuffed Whitner outside the House of Blues after he forced his way past them and then broke free from officers trying to restrain him, Stacho said.

Stacho said police heard reports that Miami Dolphins wide receiver Ted Ginn Jr. was having a birthday party at the downtown Cleveland venue but couldn't confirm whether Whitner was attending. Whitner and Ginn were high school teammates in Cleveland and played at Ohio State.

It was unclear why Whitner tried to leave the club and head for the melee, though he told officers, "My cousin's out there, and they've got guns," according to a police report, Stacho said.

Whitner said in a statement released through his agent, Neil Cornrich, that he regrets the incident: "It's not how I wish to conduct myself, and I apologize to all those involved."

A Bills spokesman said Saturday the team wouldn't comment on Whitner's situation until it had more information.

Whitner is the third Bills player to run into trouble with the law this year.

Police in South Carolina say they arrested safety Ko Simpson outside a bar in his hometown, Rock Hill, early New Year's Day when he interfered with officers trying to arrest his friends. Simpson's lawyer wouldn't discuss the case, and a prosecutor said the player had asked to enter a program that would remove a hindering police charge from his record.

Running back Marshawn Lynch was arrested near Los Angeles in February when police found a weapon in a parked car in which he was a passenger. He pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor gun charge and was sentenced to community service and probation. The NFL also suspended Lynch for three games without pay for violating the league's personal-conduct policy.
