Texans WR recalls good times with ex-teammate Henry

By DALE ROBERTSON Copyright 2009 Houston Chronicle

Dec. 17, 2009, 10:41PM

Chris Henry's off-the-field problems were well-documented, but one of Henry's former Cincinnati teammates, the Texans' Kevin Walter, said the troubled Bengal was "a good man" who seemed to be turning his life around.

Henry, on injured reserve with a broken arm, died Thursday morning from a severe head injury suffered when he tumbled from a pickup truck in Charlotte, N.C., during what appeared to be a domestic dispute with his fiancée.

"I'm as sad as I can be," said Walter, who was in his third and final season with the Bengals when Henry was a rookie in 2005. "It's tough. I got to know him pretty well. We always joked around, especially when we had Chad (Ochocinco) in there. We were friends, a close-knit group. I respected him. He was a good man. Maybe people don't know that, but he was. He was a good guy. He did everything right on the field. He was quiet, didn't say much. He was similar to Dre (Andre Johnson).

"Chris got into some trouble off the field, but that wasn't him. I think he was in the wrong place at the wrong time a lot and hanging with the wrong people. But he had his life back on track. (The Bengals) gave him another chance, and he was taking it real serious. He was getting married. He had a lot to look forward to."

Texans safety John Busing played with Henry as recently as last season and agreed with Walter's assessment that Henry was an inherently decent guy who, "last year, before the season started, kind of got things turned in the right direction. He'd definitely changed a lot of things in his life to keep him out of those bad circumstances. He'd turned the corner."

Texans receiver Johnson said he didn't know Henry personally but planned to contact his friend Ochocinco to extend his condolences.

"You hate to see something like that happen," Johnson said. "He was a very talented guy. I liked the way he played the game of football."

Henry faced the Texans twice in his career, catching three passes for 37 yards.

Texans coach Gary Kubiak said, "That's a tough situation for (the Bengals) to handle as a football family. (Coach) Marvin (Lewis) will do a great job. I just want them to know that, as an organization, our prayers are with them and the young man's family."

EAGLES NOTES

PHILADELPHIA - The one image Geoffrey Pope kept going back to was Chris Henry's locker.

Photos. Lots of photos of Henry with his fiancee, Loleini Tonga, and their kids, 3-year-old Seini, 2-year-old Chris Jr. and baby DeMarcus, less than a year old.

"He had the locker next to mine for a year and a half, and you couldn't walk past his locker without seeing all the photos he had of his family," said Pope, a 25-year-old cornerback. "He loved his family so much. That's all you would see."

Henry, Pope's teammate last year and earlier this year with the Cincinnati Bengals, died Thursday from injuries he suffered when he fell out of the back of a pickup truck driven by Tonga in Charlotte, N.C. He was 26.

The Philadelphia Eagles signed Pope from the Bengals' practice squad on Nov. 24, two weeks after the Bengals placed Henry on injured reserve with a broken arm.

"I can't believe it," Pope said in the Eagles' locker room Thursday. "It's just real hard to believe. He and (Tonga) were always together. Whenever we went out, she was always with him.

"He had a good heart. He had a couple problems in his past, but he definitely was on the straight road, trying to clear everything up. Anybody who knew him personally could tell you he was a great guy."

Injuries and off-the-field issues limited Henry to 119 catches for 1,826 yards and 21 touchdowns in parts of five seasons with the Bengals, but Pope said he was as dangerous as any receiver he ever played against.

"I practiced against Plaxico (Burress) when I was with the Giants, Chad (Ochocinco) and T.J. Houshmandzadeh with the Bengals, of course DeSean (Jackson) here, so I've practiced against a lot of great players, and athletically, I can't even describe how good he was," Pope said. "I went against this guy every day in practice, and he was one of the most athletically gifted people I've ever witnessed."

The Bengals released Henry in March of 2008 after he was arrested for the fifth time since he joined the Bengals. They re-signed him in August of 2008, although he had to serve his third NFL-imposed suspension before he could play again.

Eagles offensive lineman Stacy Andrews spent four years with Henry in Cincinnati before signing with the Eagles this past offseason.

"When the Bengals organization brought him back, you could tell he was a changed man," Andrews said. "You could see it in his eyes. He was always smiling, as opposed to when the negative things were gong on. He was always smiling and joking with everybody. You could tell he had that aura about him.

"It's a sad thing that happened, and my heart goes out to his family, kids. It was shocking to hear. I prayed before I went to bed (Wednesday) night. I was waking up in the morning and said another prayer."
Chris Henry's death 'a shock' to Kelley Washington

News of the passing of the Cincinnati Bengals' Chris Henry swept through the Ravens locker room, and Kelley Washington was one of the players most affected by the 26-year-old wide receiver's death Thursday morning.

"It's definitely a shock to everybody," said Washington, who spent the 2005 and 2006 seasons in Cincinnati with Henry. "He was a young man who, it seemed, had his life turned around for the better -- for him, his family and his career. For something tragic like this to happen caught a lot of people off-guard. It just really wakes you up -- not just as a professional athlete, but as someone in relationships and as a man. It's definitely tough."

Henry died in Charlotte, N.C. Thursday, one day after falling out of the back of a pickup truck in what authorities described as a domestic dispute with his fiancee. Henry was in Charlotte because he was on injured reserve after breaking his left forearm during a win over the Ravens on Nov. 8.

Washington said he received word of Henry's condition late Wednesday via text messages from some of his former Bengals teammates.

"I just thought it was a regular car accident as I was talking with people from Cincinnati," Washington said. "Of course, they had the news that it was something more serious than a car accident. It was something that kind of touched everybody -- and especially me -- in the NFL family."

What do you guys think about putting this thread in the HOF thread when its done...

Obviously not like the other threads in there that are mostly funny....but it would just be a way to have it somewhere where we can remember it and stuff.

A Fan's Show of Support

Bengaldom:

The Bengals have dedicated the remainder of the 2009 season to the memory of Chris Henry and will be affixing a sticker to the back of their helmets in memory of him.

I don't wear a helmet when I go to work - I go to work by sitting behind the wheel of my car, as I suspect many of the rest of us do. As a show of support for the team, for Chris' family, and as my own way of memorializing him, I will be placing a similar graphic in the rear window of my car, in the upper-left.... If you're looking for symbolism as to why the upper-left, there isn't any - I just figure that's where it will get the most visibility.

The Bengals have stated that their sticker will be a round black sticker, with a white 15 inside an orange border. I am expecting that it will look identical to the circle in the center of the current spash page at bengals.com, and that Rumble and others have extracted and are using a avatars and in their .sig lines around the site.

I have done a grab of one of these circles, cleaned it up a little, and enlarged it by 50%. When printed, it measures at approx 4-1/4" in diameter. It's a little blocky - you get that when working with JPGs - but for the intended application it should be just fine, since it's mostly going to be viewed by people driving in their cars behind me. And 4-5" in diameter seem to be just the right size.

Here's the image and a hotlink to it at Imageshack:

I hope for the life of me that Chris didn't jump. I can't even take knowing he is gone, but if I knew that he did it..it would be an even tougher pill to swallow.
I don't believe he jumped. I think he was desperately trying to get his fiancee to stop and talk, threatened to jump to get her to stop, and then fell out. Even if the eye witness heard what he said correctly, it doesn't follow (for me, anyway) that he actually contemplated suicide. It was just an accident caused by being too caught up in the heat of the moment.

A sad, sad loss.

Say a prayer for Chris Henry
By Carlos "Big C" Holmes | Thursday, December 17, 2009, 12:11 AM

»Update: Police: Bengals' Henry dies day after dispute

If someone would have told me that Chris Henry would be fighting for his life less than 24 hours after a phone conversation I had with him on Tuesday night, I would not have believed it.

Henry was hospitalized on Wednesday after falling out of the back of a pickup truck during an apparent domestic dispute with his fiancee, according to reports. He was found in the road in south Charlotte, N.C., suffering from life-threatening injuries.

When I received the news of Henry's tragic accident I was stunned. You see, I exchanged text messages with him during the day on Tuesday in an attempt to narrow down a time to chat later that evening. One of his last texts read: "Whenever you're ready hit me up C."

Chris called me shortly after 8 p.m. and we rapped for about 15 minutes or so. We caught up on some personal things before conducting a brief interview. Chris was upbeat about his wedding plans and couldn't wait to return to Cincinnati to be with the team. More than anything, he missed being out there on the field.

Chris sounded enthusiastic about the future and was the happiest I've ever heard him. He was a much different person than 2 years ago when we met. Chris was in a very dark place back then and dealing with some legal troubles. I watched this man transform his life filled with negatives into something positive. All he ever talked about was wanting to prove to the people of Cincinnati that he's a good person. He wanted their acceptance and now he's fighting for his life.

It's tough for me to see someone end up this way after trying so hard to overcome adversity.

I'm really at a loss for words. Please say a prayer for Chris and his family. I know I will.

That's really hard to listen to knowing what happened less than 24 hours later.
It also doesn't sound like someone that would even think about committing suicide.
I think he loved his kids and his life too much to do that anyway. I think it was just

Josh Katzowitz
December 18, 2009

RIO GRANDE, Puerto Rico – It was the week after he broke his arm and a couple days after the Bengals placed him on Injured Reserve. We spotted Chris Henry, arm in a cast, in the locker room, and about four of us reporters walked over to his corner locker to see how things were going.

We asked fairly innocuous questions – did you know the arm was broken immediately; how frustrating is this injury when it comes at a time like this; do you want to be back in a Bengals uniform next year? Like usual, Henry was soft-spoken and pleasant. He wasn't a great talker – you might have to combine two or three answers together to get a three-line quote for the story – but he was usually agreeable. For a pro athlete, much of the time, that's all for which you can hope.

But then, just as we were wrapping up an interview that was probably 2 or 3 minutes long, one reporter asked something like this, "Eh, Chris, some people would say that since you're not going to be around the team on a day-to-day basis, you might fall back into your old ways. What do you think?"*

*Since I'm off the mainland and can't check notes or tape recordings, this was how I recollect the exchange. It's not word for word, but the tone of the question is accurate.

This was an interesting query. Henry, as you probably know, was not a poster child for good deeds since the Bengals drafted him in 2005. He had been arrested multiple times, suspended by the NFL multiple times. He once was arrested on gun charges while he was wearing his own Bengals jersey. He had been accused of providing alcohol to minors. He was ticketed for a DUI. A local judge called him a "one-man crime wave."

He was obviously a troubled soul.

But when the Bengals released him in April of 2008, casting him into unemployment, he apparently began to change. Mike Brown, the Bengals owner who thinks of himself as a redeemer, brought him back to the Bengals squad in August of 2008, over the objections of coach Marvin Lewis, and during the 2009 training camp, Henry seemed poised to play a big role in Cincinnati's offense. He caught a touchdown pass in all four preseason games, and as the fourth receiver on the squad, he thought he could make a major impact.

The impact was less than major – he recorded a pedestrian 12 catches for 236 yards and two TDs – but his off-the-field transformation was remarkable. That was the word, anyway. He was staying out of trouble, and he was planning to marry his fiancée, make himself into a family man. But then, he broke his arm, and he found himself finished for the season.

The reporter's question – some people are saying you might screw up again – caught Henry off guard.

"Who's saying that?" he asked.

"Eh, uh, I guess I am," the reporter said.

I don't remember the answer Henry gave, but it was something along the lines of, "Don't worry about me. I've changed. I'll be just fine."

That exchange from last month was the first thing I thought about when I saw online that Henry had fallen off the back of a pick-up truck during a domestic argument and was in bad shape. Then I thought: if he hadn't suffered his broken arm, Henry would still be with the Bengals. He wouldn't have been in Charlotte arguing with his fiancée. He wouldn't have jumped onto the back of a pickup truck shirtless and the cast still on his healing arm. He wouldn't have reportedly threatened suicide. He wouldn't have fallen off. He wouldn't have died.

Coach Marvin Lewis called Henry a "beacon of hope." I'm not sure I agree with those exact words. But here's what I believe – Henry finally realized he had to make changes and that he was trying to turn his life around. Trying really hard. He was trying to be the best father and the best domestic partner he could be. He made a bad decision during an argument with a loved one, and it cost him his life. The way he died doesn't make him a bad man. The year leading up to his death showed who he truly was trying to become.

Sadly, we'll never know the end result. And that's a shame. He could have really had something to say.

Reporter heard worst, saw best of Chris Henry

NFL INSIDER
By Joe Reedy • jreedy@enquirer.com • December 19, 2009

SAN DIEGO - "Crazy, isn't it?"

That's what Chris Henry said when I asked him about changes in fans' perception of him. It's also the only possible thing I can come up with when trying to process or analyze the past 72 hours.

I was not covering the Bengals during all of Henry's past arrests and incidents. But I had my doubts and perceptions before meeting him for the first time, which came last April.

When Tank Johnson signed, Henry was in the locker room completing an offseason workout. And when everyone started linking the two together for all of their past problems, Henry talked about his experiences in a calm, measured manner.

That started to win me over.

The Chris Henry I got to know over the past 12 months was a person who appeared to finally get it. He enjoyed spending time with his children (I saw them on more than a couple occasions out on the field after practices in training camp). He was one who smiled when talking about the wedding plans he and Loleini were making for March.

• Chris Henry: Family guy (Joe Reedy's story from 10/17/09)

Last offseason was important for both Henry and the Bengals. For the first time since his rookie season, there weren't any suspensions or off-the-field incidents. He was at every workout and running drills in the slot receiver spot normally occupied by Chad Ochocinco.

It was also an offseason where Henry in public and in the locker room atoned for his past mistakes. He made the rounds on television shows, did a couple radio appearances, and discussed his family at every turn.

After surrounding himself with bad influences and being controlled by them, Henry finally took control of his situation and also had people looking out for his best interests.

He was also developing into a receiver that was more than a deep threat. The work in the slot during organized team activities and training camp allowed him to hone his short and middle routes, which he showed in the preseason with four touchdowns.

He still made some plays that would amaze you, like the one-handed grab on the sidelines in Week 5 at Baltimore when he got the ball over Domonique Foxworth and broke away for a 73-yard gain.

In the process of 12 months, fans had gone from asking why the Bengals had re-signed Henry to why wasn't he on the field more. After a quad muscle injury slowed him down for the first month of the season, he was just beginning to regain his stride when a fractured forearm in Week 9 against Baltimore ended his season.

"In my room he's always been pretty good, but now he has a much better approach to everything," wide receivers coach Mike Sheppard said back in October.
