At 6-6, Matt Jones would officially be Bengals quarterback Carson Palmer's tallest NFL target and he's intrigued via this text Thursday night from the Left Coast: "I'm excited to see what Matt can do. Any time you add a big fast guy there's more potential for big plays, which is what we're looking for."

Palmer should have another 6-6 guy waving at him as rookie tight end Chase Coffman rehabs from his ankle scope late last season. Head coach Marvin Lewis came out Friday singing his praises.

"I'm excited about how Chase will help us. He's a big-time receiving threat," Lewis said. "He catches every ball thrown near him. It's uncanny how he catches the ball. He'll help us down in the scoring zones, he'll help us in medium yardage situations, he'll help us on first and second downs."

LEWIS LOOKING AT '10: With Lewis heading into the last year of his contract, his status has become the subject of national speculation but he said Friday he has no desire to elaborate.

Lewis, who ties Paul Brown and Sam Wyche atop the franchise's all-time coaching list with eight seasons this year, wouldn't say if the Bengals have approached him about an extension.

"I enjoy living and coaching in Cincinnati," Lewis said. "It's the same thing I tell my players. You can only focus on what's out there. I'm only thinking about 2010."

Lewis, a month removed from being named the Associated Press' NFL Coach of the Year, said he doesn't think his lame-duck status hurts his ability to coach. He also said his relationship with Bengals president Mike Brown "hasn't changed."

Back in November Lewis told The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette that Brown had approached him.

"Mike has talked to me about the future," Lewis told his hometown paper. "I just told him I'd rather wait and relax and not worry about it now. We'll talk again, I'm sure."

Brown, who rarely grants interviews, gave Lewis an endorsement in the same story.

"When things went wrong here, I never believed they were Marvin's doing. Others were in the kitchen with him. Including me," Brown said.

Lewis is scheduled to appear at a news conference next Friday at the NFL scouting combine in Indianapolis, but he indicated he won't be discussing his contract.

Not that you can believe anything coaches say this time of year but I think that might put TE out of the first round.

Was sort of glowing praise for old Chase, wasn't it?

Too many cooks in the kitchen then.

I like the big target idea too. It has worked for San Diego, and has fooled everyone into thinking Phillip Rivers is a great QB.

I'd love to get Matt Jones, TO, Chase Coffman and Jermaine Gresham all on the field at the same time. Carson would have a field day.

now god damn it, why you wanna make me agree with you <_<

The thing is, Chase Coffman's ability to catch was never the question. Has he learned to block well enough to get on the field, or have they decided is upside as a receiver is too much to keep him on the sidelines?
I don't think we can know for sure that it was his blocking that kept him off the field, rather than injury.

I dont think we can know if he would or will develop into a decent enough blocker due to the injury, but I think we know early on he wasnt very good at it.

I hope that Chase Coffman and Jereome Simpson, for that matter, really come on strong between now and the draft. That would give the Bengals another weapon or two for the offense and alseo fre up the possiblities for the draft. Its unuaual for coach Lewis to praise someone like that in public so maybe that is a good sign about Coffman. On the other hand, from now until the Draft, teams are going to try and shield their true intentions regarding the draft and maybe coach Lewis was trying to tamp down all of the speculation about the Bengals taking a TE in the 1st or 2nd round.

Never said to the contrary. Who knows if it would have even mattered to him getting on the field? If he's strong enough in the passing game, he likely would have seen the field regardless of his blocking skills.

How the hell are either of them going to 'come on strong between now and the draft'? There are no games, no practices, and no OTA's.

This might help; I heard he got stoned and drunk and crashed his Porsche (bought by boosters) into a busload of kids this morning at 7:30 AM.

While Joe Reedy is away, Bengals coach Marvin Lewis talked some football Friday with Enquirer reporter John Erardi, which will be the focus of a story in Sunday’s Enquirer.

Lewis did not address his contractual status – next year is the last year of his present contract – but he did say he enjoys coaching the team and living here and is very much looking forward to 2010.

“It’s like I tell the players, ‘My focus is on 2010,’ ” Lewis said. “Beyond that, I don’t have to worry… Generally we’ve been able to work things out between the two of us.”

The other party in that twosome, of course, is Bengals president Mike Brown.

“Mike gathers his information … and we go from there,” Lewis said. “That’s kind of the way it works.”

Asked if it’s a matter of waiting to hear from Brown, Lewis said that no, it’s not a matter of either party waiting for the other.

From James Walker's Mail Bag . . .

Mr. Jones from Ohio wants to know what's the deal with 2009 third-round pick Chase Coffman?

Walker: Coffman was bothered by a foot injury last year and never looked right. I think he's better than what he showed, but the Bengals aren't sure how high his ceiling is. That's why nearly all draft projections have the Bengals looking at a tight end high in the draft. It's unknown if Coffman is reliable. Even so, Cincinnati needs at least two solid tight ends and it's questionable right now if the team has one.

See, even Matt Jones himself is asking about the TE position.
