You seriously threw Matt Jones into this conversation? He may not even be on the team in late August. I appreciate your enthusiasm, but come on Rumble!
look, i thought it was stupid when we signed him. but just wishful thinking that he might pan out and do alright in training camp to prove that he wants to be back in this league. if he works out, he might be a good #3 man.

Fair enough. And again, if nothing else, I like the enthusiasm. And to show appreciation, I think I might try The Melting Pot by my house tomorrow night - even though you have no stake in it...

Ochocinco could be getting his wish

We reported earlier today that two teams are interested in receiver Terrell Owens.

One of them, according to Geoff Hobson of Bengals.com, is the Bengals.

The disclosure comes as a surprise. Receiver Chad Ochocinco has been lobbying aggressively for T.O. to be added to the team, but all reports have indicated that the Bengals don't want to bring in another aging wideout.

Hobson says that Owens is one of several receivers in whom the team is interested. Others include Antonio Bryant, Kevin Walter, Chris Chambers, and Josh Reed.

Hobson believes that the Bengals are merely putting out feelers, and that they'll do a deal when the market settles down.

I think that's the one thing people overlook about the Matt Jones signing. Everyone looks at him in Jax and say he sucked. Well, he was the #1 there. Here he'll be AT BEST the #2, and most likely no more than the #3.

It's not like he's got a big contract. His contract is small enough that the team won't simply have to cut him if he doesn't win the #2 job. He's a very affordable #3 WR.

the more i think about it, the more i like this singing and i love his height big time. i want to be like San Diego. have the tall receivers and make it hard for DB's to cover them.

The last season Jones played he was suspended for 4 games but over the 12 games he played he was on a pace for 87 catches and over 1,000 yds.

Not an All Pro, but definitely a huge upgrade over what we had last year. he is still very young, so there is no reason to believe his skills have eroded in just one year off.

I'd go for any of the bolded, as well as TO.
Bryant, Chambers and TO would fit well with the team identity of cast offs as well.

IF the Bengals sign TO there are a lot of IFs in their WR core. IF Chad is as good as he was last year and not showing a decline. IF TO, at his age, is able to be a #2 WR for the first time in his career, not destroy a team for technically the 2nd time, AND not have declining skills typical of his age; IF he can hold on to the ball more than Coles (that is a legit question) then he could be the best #2 receiver in the league.

IF Jones can get back to his old self, where he was a #1, just like Chad is ours. He had #s very similar to TOs last year with a not so great QB.

The WR core has the potential to be very good for 1 year, 2 TOPS and highly doubtful until TO and Chad both had to be replaced due to retirement or whatever. Jones I think can develop into a very good #2 or #3 and is getting under-rated a bit due to a bad workout. He isn't new to the NFL scene, he has been a #1 and put up decent numbers.

IF TO is acquired I think a 1-3 pick should still be used a WR or receiving threat in this year's draft. There will be a lot to replace with TO and Chad's age and a question mark in M. Jones.

If B. Marshall really is available for a second round pick, or even a first, we should be looking at that like a pile of gold.

It takes care of the need for a #1 WR, for years to come and it fixes an immediate need. You also know there isn't a chance of a bust.

The guy caught his age in receptions IN ONE GAME from a garbage QB and nothing as a second receiver but a TE they are trying to trade too.

You use 2 of the first picks you don't trade on o-line and give Palmer time to throw to the best WR tandem in the NFL and potentially one of the better RB tandems, if Scott can progress, room to run.

I just think WR is such a hard position to draft. Just look at our history with recent picks. Say what you will about Henry but it was rough going for a while with even him as a 3rd rounder.

If TO can get 800 in Buffalo he can get 800 here and that's a major upgrade.

Buffalo fired the OC in the preseason. Their horrible line to begin with actually got worse with injury. Then Fitz was the QB.

TO just pulled the same thing TJ did in his last season as a bengal. TO will fit in nicely as a no. 2 WR for this team.

If we are talking about Matt Jones as a serious hope, our Front Office fucked us.

Wide receivers off the board quickly

Could moves put T.O. in the Bengals' mix as possible solution?
By Joe Reedy • jreedy@enquirer.com • March 5, 2010

While Chicago and Detroit were making early splashes on the first day of free agency, all was quiet at One Paul Brown Stadium without any announcements from the Bengals.

But they might be putting themselves in position to make some moves next week.

The team's main need continues to be at receiver, but it appears the Bengals are also looking for a tight end and help at offensive guard.

Tight end Chris Baker, who was released by New England on Thursday, will visit Cincinnati early next week. Baker, who will be entering his ninth season, was used mainly as a blocking tight end with the Patriots but had 14 receptions for 142 yards and two touchdowns. He spent his first seven seasons with the Jets.

With Reggie Kelly, J.P. Foschi and Dan Coats being free agents, the only two tight ends currently on the roster are Chase Coffman and Darius Hill.

According to the National Football Post, the Bengals also have an interest in offensive guard Chester Pitts. The nine-year veteran has spent his entire career with Houston but suffered a knee injury last year. He's mainly lined up on the left side but would team up nicely if the Bengals were able to re-sign Bobbie Williams. He would also provide depth.

But back to receiver. With Baltimore acquiring Anquan Boldin in a trade from Arizona, Nate Burleson off to Detroit and Kevin Walter re-signing with Houston, the pool of unrestricted free agents has begun to shrink, meaning that Terrell Owens continues to look better and better.

Chris Chambers, Derrick Mason and Josh Reed are other options, but none have the deep-play capability of Owens.

The Football Scientist KC Joyner took to the lab and found that Owens might actually be a nice target in free agency:

KC Joyner

Still a good vertical target
" Owens tallied 530 vertical yards on 51 vertical attempts -- for a 10.4 vertical YPA total. That ranked 44th in the league out of 86 qualifying wide receivers but it fared quite well against Chad Ochocinco (81, 824, 10.2 YPA) and Larry Fitzgerald (66, 680, 10.3 YPA). If those weren't enough, Owens also outplayed his Bills' speedster teammate Lee Evans (42, 408, 9.7). In other words, Owens may still be a headache off the field, but if a team is looking for some downfield help on the field, he's still got enough burst to offer ample assistance in this area."

Rosenhaus confirms that Bengals are interested in T.O.
Posted by Mike Florio on March 6, 2010 11:13 AM ET

On Friday morning, we reported that two teams are interested in receiver Terrell Owens.

Later in the day, Geoff Hobson of Bengals.com reported that one of them is the Bengals.

In a Friday night appearance with Bryan McGovern and Gil Brandt of Sirius NFL Radio, agent Drew Rosenhaus confirmed that the Bengals are interested in Owens.

"Right now I would say that everyone knows that the Cincinnati Bengals have expressed some interest in Terrell and they have spoken with him and myself," Rosenhaus said. "Where we go from here I'm not sure but I think it's at least a positive dialogue. And we represent another great receiver on Cincinnati in Chad Ochocinco who would love to have number 81 as his teammate. And we'll just see how that plays out. But certainly that's something that is a possibility. I guess that's about the most I can say right now."

For now, it could be that the Bengals are the only team interested in Owens. Though we don't know the second of the two teams that were interested as of Friday morning, we assume that the Ravens expressed interest in T.O. in the event they swung and missed on Anquan Boldin and Kevin Walter. Now that Boldin is in Baltimore, T.O. probably has fallen off their radar screen.

Chad Ochocinco has pleaded for Terrell Owens to become his teammate. Evidently, the Bengals have listened.

Owens’ agent, Drew Rosenhaus, confirmed Friday night on SIRIUS NFL Radio that the Bengals are interested in the six-time Pro Bowl wide receiver.

“Right now, I would say that everyone knows that the Cincinnati Bengals have expressed some interest in Terrell, and they have spoken with him and myself,” Rosenhaus said. “Where we go from here, I’m not sure, but I think it’s at least a positive dialogue. … And we’ll just see how that plays out. But certainly that’s something that is a possibility. I guess that’s about the most I can say right now.”

Rosenhaus also represents Ochocinco, who hasn’t made it a secret that he wants Owens to give Cincinnati a 1-2 receiving punch. Owens is an unrestricted free agent after spending one season with the Bills, who decided not to offer him a contract.

Like I said before, I have never liked TO, but I think at this stage in his career he is exactly what we need right now.. Even more than Boldin whom I think is more on the decline than TO.. And definitely not interested in Marshal.
