King added that Hasselbeck's first option would probably be to go to San Francisco.---

Sports Illustrated's Peter King just Tweeted the following: "[Trent Dilfer] on ESPN: 'Matthew Hasselbeck is not going back' to Seattle."

Hasselbeck will be a free agent whenever the lockout ends. Dilfer and Hasselbeck became friends when they played on the Seattle Seahawks together in the early part of last decade.

Hasselbeck's free agency, Dilfer's credibility on Hasselbeck-related news, and King's Tweet are the only facts in this story right now. What you are about to read is based entirely on speculation.

The Cincinnati Bengals, having drafted Carson Palmer's replacement in TCU quarterback Andy Dalton, have backed down on their stand to let Palmer retire rather than trade him. They've worked out a deal to send Palmer to Seattle, reuniting him with his USC coach Pete Carroll. Carroll and the Seahawks, then, would have no need for Hasselbeck, at least not enough to win a bidding war for the quarterback on the open market.

If all that is true, where would Hasselbeck end up? The Arizona Cardinals are the most obvious option, a team that at this point in the draft still has a gaping hole at quarterback. Other teams that have drafted young quarterbacks -- including the Tennessee Titans, Carolina Panthers, and, ironically, the Bengals -- may also be looking for a veteran to mentor their new talents.

If they have decided to trade him, I hope they open it up to offers rather than just trading him to Seattle.
Well, according to this, a trade is already agreed upon.

Hobson tweeted yesterday they weren't going to trade him didnt he?

ESPN isnt a real credible source for inside info anyways.

pretty sure you're thinking of Charley Casserly.

I'll believe this when I see it, but it would explain why the Seahawks never drafted a quarterback.

What kind of return would you guys expect in the trade?
I think that depends. If there are at least two teams interested, we might get more than most of us would expect. That's why I hope we openly listen to offers.

I was hoping mike would say fuck carson and let him retire!
I'm ok with that too if that's what happens, but if we can rape someone for some great value, I'd trade him. I'd let him retire before I'd trade him for next to nothing.

yeah, that's my thinking, too. it has to be a very legitimate offer, or to hell with it. under any comparison, he's the highest rated QB candidate on the market. we should be compensated as such....or more.

I also wouldn't be surprised that, if in fact this is true, that its actually a three team trade.

ie.:

Seattle gets Carson Palmer

Philly gets Seattle's first round pick in 2012 (likely a mid-first)

Cincinnati gets Kevin Kolb and Seattle's 4th rounder.

I don't love Kolb, but I like him and think he can be a very good starter in the league. I also think he'd benefit from a running game he never had in Philly where he had to throw it 40 times a game in the starts he made.

We wouldn't trade for Kolb at this point. The only thing we may be looking for would be a one year mentor type so we can ease Dalton in like we did with Kitna and Carson.

I understand your premise and think it makes sense, however, Kolb would be a stop gap until Dalton was ready, imo, so signing a guy with some experience off the street is more likely - even if Carson is dealt.

thanks. though the above two posters make good points that Kolb wouldn't likely sign for only the two years the Bengals would probably want him. He'll want a long-term deal.

He's in the last year of his contract so I'd think the Bengals would want someone for at least 2 years, or want more for Carson than just a 1yr starter and a 4th rounder.

Anything less than a second rounder I would rather let him retire.
I'd agree with that. A 'get what you can' attitude opens the door to every disgruntled player in the future, and isn't worth the peanuts you'd have gotten for Palmer. Seattle needs to be offering enough that it is the Bengals who are in the position of strength.

I know he's not a GM any longer, but Casserly on NFL-N yesterday was pretty adamant that Mike wouldn't trade Carson. That said, he indicated that if he were still a GM, he'd call Mike and try to get Carson if he needed a QB, to see what it'd take if Mike relented. He didn't hesitate in saying that he'd offer up a 1st round pick for him.
