By James Walker

Cincinnati Bengals head coach Marvin Lewis and former Pro Bowl receiver Chad Ochocinco always had a unique relationship. The pair have extremely different personalities. But with Ochocinco's talent and Lewis' desire to win, they made it work for eight years in Cincinnati.

In the past spats would happen -- usually Ochocinco doing or saying something crazy -- but Lewis and his star receiver would always get past it. But things appear different this offseason.

Lewis has taken several jabs at Ocho in the media, calling him "mopey" and also saying the New England Patriots were too smart to sign the embattled receiver. Ochocinco, in return, has fired back at every chance after feeling he was thrown under the bus by his head coach.

Most recently Ochocinco said he would "whup Lewis' [expletive]," which is a strange and blunt thing to say, even for Ochocinco.

In fact, when was the last time any NFL player said that about his head coach -- at least publicly?

Ochocinco and Lewis usually have the mentality that, eventually, they will hug and make up. But after covering this zany pair in some capacity since 2004, I'm getting the sense both are moving closer to the point of no return.

The Bengals have one season left on Ochocinco's contract at $6.5 million and, at 33, his production no longer matches his high salary. It would be an easy decision for Cincinnati to release Ochocinco once a new collective bargaining agreement is reached.

This strange marriage was bound to implode sooner or later, and now seems like the perfect time for Cincinnati's odd couple to separate before it gets worse.

How about Chad is tired of losing and doesn't see Marvin as the answer.
Kind of like Carson.
And everyone who did not renew their season tickets the past couple years.

Is Chad tired of playing for third rate coaches and a bottom 5 franchise? Yeah, probably.

I"m not understanding this.. I know the Bengals haven't won a playoff game since 1914. (something like that). But other than the bad season that was totally lost by having Ryan Fitzpatrick as QB, and last years total debacle, this team has been competitive, every year. They've won 2 division championships, and been in the running for a playoff birth at least 3 other years. When you're put in those positions, almost every year, when do you say it's not the coaches, and the "worst franchise ever" and it gets time for the players to produce on the field?

What were Chad stats in BIG games?!? What were Carson's stats in BIG games? The Bengals may not have signed the free agents most of us FANS would have wanted, but fans make the worst GMs know to man. But I honestly believe Marvin has set this team up for success and totally changed the culture of the Bengals. a slouch coach would not be able to do that. How many players attended the players run workouts? That's proof Marvin and his staff has assembled a bunch of players that WANT to win and are willing to do what it takes to win.

It's been so easy to focus on the negative things on this team, because outside of the Bengals community, everyone thinks this, but ask the CURRENT players what they think about the head coach, and you'll get an amazing amount of positive feedback..(It's sort of like when you're in the army. Ask the people he leads, and you'll get a TRUE assessment of the worth of that leader)

The losing has not been as dire as most of us thinks it's been.

I know this team has a bad history, but the last 10 years of haven't been THAT bad.

.....Steps off his soap box....

Maybe it's because Marvin's record at Cincy is below .500. Maybe it's because the only attributes one hears about Coach Marvin Lewis is "he's a nice guy", "players like him", "good for the community" and now famously "the best grinder".

Gosh, I love the Bengals and always will. But please don't expect me to be happy or satisfied because things haven't been "THAT BAD"

Before Marvin got here chad was a nobody, the media didn't ever blink twice at chad or the Bengals.
it wasn't until Marvin came to Cincinnati thing's changed a little bit before Marvin
the Bengals could not make the playoff's,since Marvin, the Bengals have been the playoff's
twice in his 8 year career and it's still not good enough.IF Chad goes somewhere else no coach
is going to put up with his bullshit.I'm surprised this one are any of the other coach's
don't have the ball's to put Chad in check or cut his ass from the team.

sometimes I wise this was the coach.

Chad was a nobody because he wasn't yet established as an elite player...

And coaches put up with criminals, they'll be able to put up with a clown.

I'm embarrassed for you, based on your post.

before Marvin got here the Bengals where 4-12 twice 6-10 2-14 who where the coach's at
that time. Dick Lebeau and Bruce Coslet.Chad was on lebeau's team and they still didn't
do anything until Marvin showed up. while chad was a losing team. Marvin was in the playoff's and
the Superbowl. And yes I know this team has had criminals and that why no one has the ball's to check
these player's at the door.First off no team would put up with chad and no team would up ,with
the people we've had on this team, despite their past Cedric Benson and Rey maualuga are acting
more like leader's then this clown.who half ass show up to ota if at all, are who would rather be on
dance with the star's then help his quarterback who needed he last year.WHEN they were learning
new plays or how about when his team hold a team practices in a lockout, he rather go workout with Terrelle pyor.
And continue to do anything to be a media whore,Chad is the weakest link on this team,he and Carson need to be cut
and the team need to star over.

not comparing chad to these people, but it seem to be double standard, when come's to chad
you know it bad when no of the coach's will say any to chad when he drop's pass in training champ and
it take's Roy Williams to say something.

Chad was here for 2 years before Marvin. How much could the guy accomplish in 2 years? His first year I don't even think he started.

I think Chad's public comments are joking around making light of the actual tension between the two exists.

I think there is real tension between them but are having a public sparing as good fun.

Is this "feud" real...or is it made up by the media squawking heads who root for some big implosion to give them more ink? The media in general will only feed John Q what they think John Q wants to read/hear...or to steer John Q to believe a certain way so that they will have more ink to pen on a subject. Such is the case here.

ML can be frustrated with on-field Chad...he was just as frustrated (if not more) with Simpson. He can obliquely chide Chad for his activities...but he not-so-obliquely chides the same media wishing to create stories out of nothing.

2011 is a watershed season for both. And actually, both need the other in order to make success on the field (and not in the newspapers) a reality. Chad would like his $6mm...and also re-assume his place as the #1 WR on this team. No more backseat Robin to Batman. And just by stepping into the locker room, he will be the #1 WR. That won't be some rookie, or Jerome Simpson...it would be Chad. ML needs Chad...as he is the only experienced true front-of-the-rotation WR he has. If he doesn't have the Quitter...he will need someone who has the numbers to step up. And Chad can (and will) step up.

They need each other for 2011. After that...it would be anyone's guess.

IMO, I think they both are just ready to be done with each other, and they both know its coming as soon as the lockout is over.

And keep in mind, Chad's already received $3.5 million of that $6 million. So he doesn't have THAT much incentive to want to stay. He'll get at least $2 million from another team.

And I disagree that Marvin needs Chad, especially if they are rebuilding this year. It's time to sink or swim with the younger guys. Caldwell and Simpson aren't young and inexperienced anymore, and there is finally a TE threat (or two) to take some burden off the WR corp. RB's also look like they'll be more involved in the passing game too.
