Given how much the coaches like Geathers, I think they would be fine with that.

RayM's early season issues might have been more injury driven than we thought at the time. In the coach's spot, I'd be leery of dropping one of the 2 starter quality guys we have standing just because both are 'natural MLBs' . They played Ray out of that spot for a while without a qualm. Since Taze is playing at a high level where he is, why sweat the lables?

The coaches like all our guys I'm sure. ;)

I'm not convinced its all injury, Rey was overpersuing alot, that's mental not physical.

Sure, and I'm just saying those rotational guys could very likely come from the draft, espessally if they lose both Gathers and MJ.

Now that is an argument that I can buy, but yeah in terms of talent no way is MJ better than Dunlap.

I'm not saying they won't draft a DE. I'm saying I don't think they do it in the first round.

It can be physical. Get enough mass moving in a direction and it's hard to change that direction or stop it suddenly. Law of momentum. Simple physics.

Right but knowing the angles to take so you dont overpersue is a big part of that.

I think that chance is remote. I don't see either of them gone, really. We have room for a development guy even with them both.
I think at this point its a 50/50 chance. I see one of them gone, and I think it will be Gathers.

It will unquestionably before he retires
Replacing him all together will happen, he wont be moved, at least not here.

Assuming for the moment we keep everyone we want to - Ray M, Geathers and MJ, Andre Smith...

RB - could use a speed guy to complement BJGE and Peerman.
LB - don't really have anyone solid at WLB, unless Howard returns at a high level. Probably could use a couple picks/FAs.
S - don't have any young developing talent in reserve, it seems.
DE - could use a young guy to work in like Thompson/Still.
WR - midround guy if anyone. Could perhaps use a KR/PR specialist to push Tate/Jones.
This looks about right to me. Although I would probably prefer to re-sign Thomas Howard over Rey. I also really like the way Adam Jones is playing. I'd love to see him sign a 2 or 3 year extension.

I think if we handle business in FA by re-signing our key guys, we will go into the draft without any real glaring holes, which would allow for BPA. Aside from RB, I would think we'd be mainly focused on Defense. So at least 2 of the first 3 picks are probably BPA on defense (except for DT). Another pass rushing threat at DE would be nice. A great young LB would be nice. A difference maker at Safety would be nice. I could even see adding another CB if there is a guy available who they think is a big-time player.

If I had to place money on the position we address in the 1st round as of today, I would bet on DE. We basically have one guy under contract for next year in Dunlap and he's entering the last year of his deal. Both Dunlap and MJ will be expensive to retain and if past is any indicator (Hall and JoJoe for example), we'll end up letting one of the two get away. Geathers has been a valuable guy for a long-time, but he's been in the league almost 10 years now and is also a FA after the season.

I'll also add that I think this draft is strongest at the Safety and DE positions. There are more top 100 type guys at Safety than there have been in at least the past 5 years. And I think there are almost a dozen DEs who could go in the top 40 or 50 picks. LB is probably a little above average also.

The one position that we need that looks a little weak is RB. I don't see any 1st rounders and I'm not totally sold on anyone as a 2nd rounder even, though I'm sure at least a couple guys will probably emerge as 2nd rounders. This RB class points more towards us using a mid-round pick on a #2 or #3 RB.

Even if MJ and Gathers are both gone?
Yes. They would likely sign a free agent and draft one. Or they might draft 2. I'm just not convinced they use a first round pick on a guy that won't play "every down".

If they dont keep MJ, they wont pay someone else to come in at that type of money imo, it would more likely be a rotational Gillberry type, which means we'd be downgraded in talent, which means a DE pick is all the more likely.

Wholeheartedly agree they would draft a DE. Just not in the first round.

None of our current D-linemen are first round picks. Unless you count Anderson who didn't play like one, or make money like one.

I think it would depend on how the positions they were looking at graded out, for instance if a LB and DE are there and they have a DE graded higher, they take the DE.

He retires in stripes without ever leaving and he ends up playing another position. I would bet on it.

Use the Geathers money on M.J and draft a de in rounds 2-5. LB should be priority number one though.
I'm warming to the idea of re-signing sims, getthing thompson up to speed, and turning devon still into a better version of Fanene (along with re-signing MJ).

Gimme Alec Ogletree from Georgia in the first. Freak athlete and can play all 3 linebacker positions. We have a pretty good track record with Georgia guys.
unless he's played better lately, no thanks. HIs own coaches called him soft.
