Who are you watching? 2014

Recommended Posts

From what I've seen, I like Hyde more than Carey.  Carey runs really upright.  Kind of looks a bit like Ryan Matthews in the way he runs.  Hyde runs kind of high, but he's a big fella and will just abuse arm tacklers.  Carey may do the same thing, but not until he puts on some weight.

there's also HUGE character red flags with Carey.

not that Hyde was a saint obviously, but I've heard talk of some teams taking Carey completely off their board because of how much of a punk he is.

I've watched (what's available on the web) and in order of preference:
DE
Kareem Martin
Trent Murphy (3-4 OLBish)
Josh Mauro
Scott Crichton
Trevor Reilly (3-4 OLBish)

It was really only reflecting how they were used in college. Stanford played Murphy not just standing up, but in the slot over TE's. He moves really well in space for a guy his size. Same with Reilly. With the exception of Crichton, I was trying to look at guys who had similar measurables to guys the team normally covets. I was surprised to see both Reilly and Murphy play a LBish role.

CB's - Dennard, Gilbert, Verrett

Dennard is the one I want but he will be gone before we pick I reckon. I really like Verrett, he's a true shutdown guy, he plays bigger and more physical than his size. I like Gilbert but he's more of a ball hawk than a shutdown guy which is why I prefer the other two right now.

Just got finished watching Verret, he is great in coverage. He's a real liability when tackling. He will be run over far too often in the NFL. Don't get me wrong, he's not bad at all but I think his size is a legitimate concern.

The other two are really solid, especially Dennard. Gilbert didn't play much press man in school so there may be some growing pains. A guy I've liked for a while is Kyle Fuller, he's got great awareness and size, he does lack straight speed but his "quicks" are excellent and combined with his IQ really mitigates the lack of top end speed.

A guy that has some video out there (albeit not good quality) is Pierre Desir from Lindenwood. Of course there are questions about the competition, which looked really, really bad (Lincoln and Ft Hays St.), but the kid has tremendous size/speed and long arms. It'll be interesting to see where he ends up.

I like Joyner.  He looks like a guy who could be a slot corner before potentially take over for Reggie Nelson.  Tackles well enough to play safety and closes really well.  Played all six positions at FSU according to his DC.  Any ball he gets his hands on has potential to be taken to the house.

Yeah, I've been a fan, though I'm starting to see him pop in first round discussions, which is a bummer. I think his size dings him enough that he falls, but his versatility is great, he's a playmaker, and the idea that he could take over slot duties and eventually step in for Reggie is exactly how I would justify the pick.

I've kind of been checking out the RB's only because of Hue's emphasis on the run game.

I surely don't think we'll take one in the 1st round.  But I wouldn't be surprised if we don't

go RB again as early as the 2nd round this year.

Carlos Hyde, James Wilder Jr. and Charles Sims.

I'd love for Hyde to be there in the 2nd round when we pick but I don't see that happening.

Charles Sims intrigues me.  6'0" 213 lbs.  208 rushing attempts for 1095 yards and 45 catches

for 401 yards.  11 rushing TD's and 3 receiving TD's.  May sound like a Gio clone but I think

this guy could put on 10 lbs fairly easily and not lose anything.

James Wilder Jr. on the other hand isn't much of a receiving threat but with his size at

6'2" 229 lbs and minimum wear and tear in college (only had 226 carries in college) could

be our next Corey Dillon.  And he just "MIGHT" be sitting there in the 3rd round.  Not too

mention he'd be a lot cheaper than BJGE.  Could free up some cash to resign someone like

oh let's say A.J. Green.  I know it wouldn't be a HUGE savings but every penny is going to

count because, let's face it.  A.J. isn't gonna be cheap!

Of course we have to keep an eye on the CB's.

Darqueze Dennard MSU  5' 11" 197 lbs.

Justin Gilbert OSU (Oklahoma St.)   6' 0"  200 lbs.

Jason Verrett TCU  5' 10" 176 lbs.

Bradley Roby OSU 5' 11" 190 lbs.

I'd like to see Verrett fall to us in the 1st round but I wouldn't be surprised either if he were

the 1st CB taken in the 2014 draft.

RB

Tre Mason, Auburn - best playmaker in the draft

Carlos Hyde, Ohio State - best power back in the draft

Bishop Sankey, Washington - neck and neck with Hyde, but Hyde's power gives him the edge

James Wilder Jr, Florida State - if he puts it together, could be the best of the group

Marion Grice, Arizona State - a little overrated IMO, but still solid

Andre Williams, Boston College - top speed keeps him out of the top 2 or 3

Charles Sims, West Virginia - has starter tools

Jerome Smith, Syracuse - a nice power back for a committee, with some twitch of his own

LaDarius Perkins, Mississippi State - underused in college, maybe a dimanond in the rough

Tyler Gaffney, Stanford - power complement

Isaiah Crowell, Alabama State - committee back

Rajion Neal, Tennessee - not all that impressive.
