There is a limit on the number of important players you can/should afford. MJ is a good, even great player. But we already locked up another good/great, younger player at his position for less money than MJ commanded. If we were bereft at DE, MJ would have been more important to the Bengals.

I get that, but we have a shit ton of money. We could have kept him. All we have to do is not go spastic on re-signing guys like AJ Green and Burfict earlier then is necessary. We have a team option on Green after this year from what I have been told and Burfict is only a restricted FA next year.

How do you justify paying a 20% premium on a DE whose production you've already prepared to replace? If Dunlap isn't signed, or we don't have Gilberry/Hunt, this is a different conversation. Just because the money is there doesn't make this a good venture to use it on. And as far as Green and Burfict go... trust me when I say that you do not let your All-Pros get anywhere near free agency in their prime. Especially Burfict; the highest RFA tag returns only a first round pick. Another team would gladly pay him exorbiantly and sacrifice that pick to get him. The longer they go unsigned, the more expensive they get.

Filed to ESPN: Pending a physical, former Cowboys DE DeMarcus Ware reached agreement with Broncos on 3-year, $30M contract include $20M gtd.

Wow. Denver is really going for a winner this year.

Damn how do they do it. The Broncos are all in. The Bengals are saving cap space for 2017 when Gio Bernard becomes a free agent. Fml

yep. The reality is, Green and Burfict are cheaper if you lock them up NOW rather than a year from now.  Not sure why anyone wouldn't understand that.

I'm guessing this data exists somewhere...

I wish I could see a chart of the breakdown of average % of salary cap used per position group, and how each team (specifically the Bengals) compares to the average.

For example (making these #'s up...)

Overall Offense:  NFL Average = 53%   /    Bengals = 43%

     QB - AVG = 10%   /    Bengals = 5%

     RB - AVG = 5%   /    Bengals = 5%

     O-Line - AVG = 20%   /    Bengals = 20%

     WR - AVG = 15%   /    Bengals = 10%

     TE - AVG = 3%   /    Bengals = 3%

Overall Defense:  NFL Average = 45%   /    Bengals = 55%

     D-Line - AVG = 20%   /    Bengals = 25%

     LB - AVG = 10%   /    Bengals = 10%

     Secondary - AVG = 15%   /    Bengals = 20%

Overall Specialists:  NFL Average = 2%   /    Bengals = 2%

I don't know that the data exists, though spotrac may have it.

I do know the Bengals had the highest paid defense in the league last year.

For the Bengals, at least:

Spend by offense/defense:

Spend by position:

I think that people understand that.  And that is just an assumption anyway but I think a good one. However, It doesn't somehow make them a necessity to lock up now though. Especially at the cost of MJ.

We can match anything on Burfict though in that scenario.

Keeping MJ vs losing him doesn't really have anything to do with extensions for Green and Burfict. Once he turned down the deal that Dunlap got for ~6.5m/yr, the writing was on the wall. The Bengals were never willing to pay him much more than that regardless.
