Late Beautiful Good Bad and Ugly

Recommended Posts

Bad: we should have never let those fuckers score a single goddamn point. The defense got soft on a couple drives and allowed it. Against a team like the shitty Titans that shouldn't happen. Against a good team it may cost us a game.

More dumb than soft on the scoring drive. Too many penalties.

I think the poor tackling, especially in the run game, was a major cause. They had another drive where they marched down the field on us, mostly gashing us with the run, and didn't score because they suck, but that's not going to fly against better teams. And this is after the impressively crisp tackling against the Falcons.

Marvin took a lot of the starters out in the 4th quarter when the score was 33 - 0

Titans didn't score until the bengals had pulled many of their defensive starters.

The Good:

Offense put up 31 points on only 300 total yards. It helps when Gio and Hill combine for 3 rushing TD's. They also scored another TD on a gadget play by Sanu. Dalton catching a TD pass was pretty crazy and could have been a disaster if the Titans defender had made a better play on the ball. Andy had only 23 attempts for the 2nd straight week, but he largely avoided mistakes and was not to blame for the interception. Kind of glad it happened in a blowout and didn't factor in the outcome. AJ had one of the guttier performances of his career. 6 catches for over 100 yards and drew a pass interference penalty that set up Gio's first TD. He came up big when it wasn't guaranteed he would play at all earlier in the week. Offensive line once again did not allow a sack and had a good day in goal line and short yardage situations. On defense, it was bend-but-don't-break for most of the day and the Titans were able move the ball pretty well between the 20's. Playing without Burfict, they still nearly pitched a shut out and only allowed a single score in garbage time. Dunlap and Hall were the two I thought stood out the most. Nelson and Geathers contributed a pair of interceptions that kept the Titans off the board and directly led to a TD, respectively. Special teams had a good day overall, especially Huber. Peerman drew a key holding penalty that resulted in a safety and it didn't hurt to see Succup miss the two FG attempts. All three phases contributed to the victory.

The Bad:

The offense didn't have a good day on 3rd down (3 for 9) or passing the ball. Outside of AJ, Sanu, and Andy's one catch, the Bengals didn't do much through the air. Glad Marvin Jones will be back soon because we will need better production out of the rest of our receivers. He might also help on 3rd downs. Defensively, there were plenty of mistakes that need to be corrected. Maualuga and Pacman had a handful of missed tackles, while Dre and Dunlap had costly penalties. Newman dropped what should have been a pick six. For thegame, the Titans rushed for 5.3 yards per carry. Like I said, plenty of work needs to be done to correct those mistakes and not having Burfict does not excuse any of these problems.

The Ugly:

I did not see anything that rose to the level of ugly except the decision to throw the ball that led to Andy's interception. I like playing aggressive, but that was not a good situation to risk it with the lead we had. I think we came out of it OK injury-wise, but I am hoping AJ didn't do anything to his foot on his last catch.

Seemed Dre was awfully good on Teams.

Dre is a beast on special teams. His one "bad play" was the result of a horribly under thrown ball that the WR just happened to notice at the last possible second and was able to adjust. Dre had great coverage on him and Dre shouldn't be looking back unless the WR does. It was just one of those plays that we've lucked out on before and it went the other way this time.

It was great seeing Dre and Dennard out there getting reps to get more experience at CB since they don't get crap for reps in games with 3 studs ahead of them.

Dennard got absolutely smoked on a play in the 4th quarter, but luckily the ball was way overthrown and no one noticed that he had gotten beat.

By the time the titans scored we were playing a very vanilla, drop back into more prevent defense and with tons of backups in the game. It was not telling of anything and isn't how the game would have been played if it were versus a good team or if it were close.

Yeah but even before that, the Titans were moving the ball pretty well on offense. Despite the lopsided score, they ended up with 22 first downs and 326 total yards, compared to 25 and 300 for the Bengals, respectively.

The defense did force turnovers - which shouldn't be overlooked - but without Burfict they weren't the suffocating defense we've all grown accustomed to seeing.

People underestimate the titans too. Go look at their OL. They have a very very good OL, especially in the running game. Give them a good QB and they are a strong team. They have some talented RBs and a couple good WRs and a great TE in Walker. They have a really crappy QB that no one respects. We got pressure on their QB mostly because we blitzed, but when they handed off to the RB there were big holes created by some dominant OL.

It's not an excuse but without Burfict and Brandon Thompson the run D will not be nearly as good. Vinny Rey is solid but he isn't Burfict. And Thompson is very underrated for how good he is against the run. In running situations we are playing Geno, Still and some of our DEs at DT in place of Thompson who is built for clogging the middle.
