Bengals eye future with release of Geathers

Everyone saw it coming, but it still didn’t make it any easier Friday when the Bengals released one of their more versatile players and valued leaders across the defensive front and around the locker room in 11-year veteran Robert Geathers.

The departure of Geathers, a swing player between tackle and end due to count slightly more than $3 million under the salary cap in the last year of his contract,  indicates the Bengals are looking to go younger up front via recent draft picks, future draft picks, and maybe in free agency if the price is right.

The Bengals also released Friday wide receiver Greg Little, a veteran who was inactive for five of the last seven games and only played in the Wild Card Game because of injuries. His biggest moments as a Bengal came when he signed and then called out his former head coach in Cleveland, Mike Pettine, and when he had two huge catches in the win over Baltimore at PBS.

The move foreshadows what should be an active week next week at Paul Brown Stadium in the run-up to the March 10 start of free agency. It’s believed the Bengals are going to be taking some visits with some of players that joined Geathers and Little this week on the street.

Geathers is the only Bengal to have played on all six of head coach Marvin Lewis’ playoff teams, but he appeared in only five of them because of the shoulder injury that wiped out most of his 2013 season.

Yet his 152 games are the third most played by a Bengals defensive lineman, behind only Tim Krumrie (188) and Eddie Edwards (170).  One of the youngest Bengals ever when they took him out of Georgia in the fourth round in 2004 at age 20, Geathers played up and down the line as well as starting four games at SAM linebacker in 2007. He's one of only 19 Bengals to have played at least 11 seasons.

“Robert has been with us for all my seasons except the first one,” said Lewis in a news release, “and he has been a team leader as well as a very productive player. He’s an incredible teammate and a true professional, a big part of the winning seasons we’ve achieved. If Robert elects to pursue an opportunity with another NFL team, the timing of this move will allow him the best possible chance at that.”

After starting every game for the 2005 AFC North champs at right end, he lost 15 pounds for the next season and rung up 10.5 sacks as a third-down rusher for the club’s most sacks in 23 years to earn the club’s biggest defensive deal ever at the time, a six-year extension worth about $33 million.

He then started at left end for the next several years and while he never had more than 3.5 sacks after ’06, the Bengals relied on his versatility and leadership as they transitioned to defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer’s brand in 2008. Young defensive ends such as Carlos Dunlap and Michael Johnson often pointed to his tutelage for their success.

With Geathers gone, a younger pair of ends who sat last year while he played about 52 percent of the snaps are going to get more time. Margus Hunt, a second-round pick in 2013, played about 14 percent and Will Clarke, last year's third-rounder, about five percent.

It’s unclear if the Bengals are going to sign some of the free agents that are visiting or if they are just giving them physicals to see if they’ll fit in down the road.

One intriguing name is former Cowboys and Chiefs tight end Anthony Fasano, cut by Kansas City this week. The Bengals coveted Fasano coming out of Notre Dame in 2006 and it would have been an interesting call if he was there at No. 55 in the second round. But the Cowboys grabbed him at No. 53 and the Bengals went with LSU left tackle Andrew Whitworth, a linchpin since that draft.

Geathers has been a good Bengal.

His he the first or only Bengal player that has been apart of 6 playoff teams for the franchise?

Yep, 6 playoff teams, 6 playoff losses. Second all time in playoff game appearances although Collinsworth's teams had far more success.

In the "Who are we going to release" thread..

I'm pretty sure I've seen it in various other threads over the past few weeks... And ironically one was your quote that I remembered seeing today (talking about cutting Geather, Peko and Hall restructuring):

Wait.. So the plan is to cut all 3 of the biggest leaders on the defensive side of the ball at the same time.. And replace them with free-agents? Whom we have no idea how well they will actually mesh with our scheme and in the locker room, let alone what kind of leadership they will bring if any..

Right in the middle of our championship window?

Yeah, that doesn't sound like a very good idea to me.

LOL

Where in there did I say that Geathers wouldn't get cut?

Or perhaps you are referring to my very next post in the thread where I said..

I am all for moving on past Geathers, as I think most would agree. FTR, from what I hear Peko is the main guy on that side of the ball with Jumpy Jr right behind. Hall is the heart of that secondary even if he isn't in his prime anymore.

I say cut Geathers, restructure Hall, and continiue pushing Peko into more of a roatational role as he still is one hell of a load to move and is still a very effective 0/1 tech even if he doesn't keep the legs as fresh as he once used to. I am still of the opinion that the regression of Geno the loss of Johnson and general attrition had a lot to do with Peko's seemingly down year as he received more attention by the defense and wasn't able to rotate out as much as he should have been.

Or maybe the one after that where I said..

How about cut Geathers and you can still add that player you are talking about.. You guys act like they need to cut these guys for cap room or something.. Geathers is done, he needs to go.  Hall had a down year after Achilles surgery, and maybe he is done, and the coaches will get a handle on that when mini-camps start up, but if he is even close to form you try to keep him because I think he can still play.  Peko is still a good 0/1 tech.. Maybe his legs aren't as fresh as they once were and he may need more bench time (something he was sorely lacking last season) but if Geno returns to form and we can replace Geathers with an actual NFL caliber end I think you will see the DL production back to where it needs to be.

Or maybe you just need to learn to read?

I wasnt calling anyone out when I posted that people had said Geathers wouldnt be cut- and wasnt planning on trying to look it up until you specifically asked... You stirred the pot, not me- and that is the post I saw- in which you SPECIFICALLY said they wouldnt cut he or the other two, and insuated that it would be a bad idea to lose his leadership and replace it with a FA. My reading comprehension is perfectly fine.

As for your other posts after you said he shouldnt be cut, I hadnt read them at the time. And as I mentioned- you arent the only one who has mentioned Geathers not being cut over the past month or two.

Its Friday, get yourself a drink and relax. Maybe BAB can hook you up with some good sticky icky to calm your nerves a bit. Jesus. The last person on this team or issue in the world I have any interest in arguing about is Robert "technically I still play football" Geathers.

Ok, you are still going to try and say I said he wouldn't or shouldn't be cut EVEN AFTER I posted those quotes directly contradicting that because of this statement, while ALSO trying to say there is nothing wrong with your reading comprehension?

So, please illustrate where I "specifically said" that Geathers would or should not be cut? I stirred the pot by asking you where you read that? Really? You didn't "call me out" by quoting me out of context to make it sound like I said something I clearly did not say, something I actually said THE DIRECT OPPOSITE OF in fact? That's not "stirring the pot"?

I believe he said in one of the post and not specifically the post you quoted to win the argument. But carry on if it makes you feel better or just let it go and move on.

Umm, that was the post HE quoted when I asked him when he had read someone saying Geathers wouldn't be cut. I asked for clarification because I found the idea ridiculous and hadn't myself seen anyone say that, but had seen others say they had, so I wanted to know who.

Imagine my surprise when he quoted me in a thread where I had indeed said the exact opposite of that.

Once again, that was my post HE QUOTED to "win the argument".. Sorry if I'm not cool with being quoted out of context to make it look like I said something stupid when I actually said the exact opposite. If you are cool with people doing that to you fine. I am not.

its pathetic how happy people are that good players get cut. There sure as hell arent many players who want to spend their entire careers in a place like cincinnati, and even fewer that are good enough to do so. RGJR was a very good player for many years, and a very good rotation guy for a few more.. I dont disagree with the release.. but the fact that people are happy about releasing a guy who was a backup rotation guy, as most of them are the ones calling for cutting him the year after his big year, just like they do every other player who they think should be a 10x pro bowler or bust.

one of the nicest bengals i ever talked to, and fun to watch for many years..

keep the pitch forks lit girls...
