2nd round mock drafts

Recommended Posts

Hopefully there will be some mocks that come out today prior to Day 2 getting started, so figured we could use a thread for them. This is the first one I've seen (from SB Nation):

In the second round, expect there to be some runs on offensive skill positions, the top remaining offensive linemen and cornerbacks. Here's how things could shake out in round two of the draft:

33. Tennessee Titans - Jaelen Strong, WR, Arizona State

The Titans have bigger needs, but drafting Strong would pair Marcus Mariota with a potential No. 1 wide receiver.

34. Tampa Bay Buccaneers - Tre Jackson, G, Florida State

If the Buccaneers want to maximize No. 1 overall pick Jameis Winston, they have to keep him upright.

35. Oakland Raiders - Eddie Goldman, DT, Florida State

After passing on Leonard Williams in the first round, some of that sting can be taken away by picking Goldman. When he's giving good effort he can be unstoppable.

36. Jacksonville Jaguars - Jay Ajayi, RB, Boise State

The draft's third-best running back seems like an easy fit in Jacksonville.

37. New York Jets - Randy Gregory, OLB, Nebraska

Gregory is an enigma off the field, but his talent is too great to overlook.

38. Washington - Jalen Collins, CB, LSU

I like the idea of Washington grooming Collins and Bashaud Breeland to be their starting cornerbacks for years to come.

39. Chicago Bears - Eli Harold, OLB, Virginia

The Bears can find a pass rusher at this point in the draft. They could land an athletic edge threat in Harold here.

40. New York Giants - Owamagbe Odighizuwa, DE, UCLA

The Giants have their choice of a few defensive ends including Mississippi State's Preston Smith, but Odhizuwa is the better prospect.

41. St. Louis Rams - Brett Hundley, QB, UCLA

The Rams spent so much time with the top quarterbacks leading up to the draft it would hard to see them not taking one today.

42. Atlanta Falcons - Landon Collins, S, Alabama

Although Collins may not be the perfect coverage safety, his value is far too great to overlook with the No. 42 pick.

43. Cleveland Browns - Devin Smith, WR, Ohio State

Smith's mom might not want him in Cleveland, but he's the type of outside vertical threat Cleveland's offense needs.

44. New Orleans Saints - Nate Orchard, OLB, Utah

After getting an offensive lineman and inside linebacker in the first round, the Saints can find an edge rusher at No. 44 with Orchard.

45. Minnesota Vikings - Dorial Green-Beckham, WR, Oklahoma

The Vikings may not have taken a wide receiver in the first round, but if DGB pans out, it won't matter. He could be Randy Moss 2.0 for the Vikings.

46. San Francisco 49ers - Devin Funchess, WR, Michigan

Funchess is a hybrid wide out and tight end who can be a real weapon in space.

47. Miami Dolphins - Eric Kendricks, ILB, UCLA

Kendricks would slot into the starting inside linebacker spot for the Dolphins, allowing them to move Koa Misi back outside.

48. San Diego Chargers - T.J. Clemmings, OT, Pittsburgh

Clemmings could slip this far in the draft because of injury concerns. But healthy, he's an impressive right tackle who should just continue getting better.

49. Kansas City Chiefs - Jake Fisher, OT, Oregon.

Fisher is an intriguing offensive tackle with athleticism. He could line up at a number of positions for the Chiefs.

50. Buffalo Bills - La'el Collins, OT, LSU

There is obviously a risk to taking Collins, but if Buffalo is confident his ongoing legal issues aren't a problem they should strike.

51. Houston Texans - Denzel Perryman, ILB, Miami

After getting a starting cornerback in the first round, Houston could move up a level on defense and add a starter at inside linebacker in Perryman.

52. Philadelphia Eagles - Eric Rowe, CB/S, Utah

The Eagles need to add talent in the secondary and Rowe is capable of playing safety or cornerback in the NFL.

53. Cincinnati Bengals - Preston Smith, DE, Mississippi State

The Bengals brought back Michael Johnson but need to continue improving the pass rush.

54. Detroit Lions - Jordan Phillips, DT, Oklahoma

The Lions could continue beefing up the middle of their team after drafting guard Laken Tomlinson in the first round. Phillips excels at occupying multiple blocks and pushing the pocket.

55. Arizona Cardinals - Benardrick McKinney, ILB, Mississippi State

The Cardinals want to get faster at linebacker and McKinney would go a long way in achieving that goal playing from the middle.

56. Pittsburgh Steelers - P.J. Williams, CB, Florida State

The Steelers got Bud Dupree in the first round and could rely on the cornerback depth to target that area in the second round.

57. Carolina Panthers - Donovan Smith, OT, Penn State

The Panthers didn't land a first-round offensive tackle and Smith is by far the best one left on the board.

58. Baltimore Ravens - Michael Bennett, DT, Ohio State

Bennett could compete for the five-technique role in Baltimore and give the Ravens a player who can rush the passer and stop the run.

59. Denver Broncos - Maxx Williams, TE, Minnesota

Value outweighs all else with this choice. Williams could be the Julius Thomasreplacement for the Broncos.

60. Dallas Cowboys - Tevin Coleman, RB, Indiana

This was the easiest pick to make in this mock draft. Coleman could assert himself as Dallas' lead runner.

61. Indianapolis Colts - A.J. Cann, G, South Carolina

The Colts would be lucky to get Cann with this choice in the second round. He could come in at guard and second-year player Jack Mewhort could challenge for the right tackle spot.

62. Green Bay Packers - Paul Dawson, LB, TCU

Dawson would be the inside linebacker the Packers defense needs so Clay Matthews can stick on the outside.

63. Seattle Seahawks - Ronald Darby, CB, Florida State

The Seahawks need to upgrade at cornerback after losing Byron Maxwell and Darby's level of talent should outweigh any concerns about his size in Seattle's system.

64. New England Patriots - Ali Marpet, G, Hobart

Marpet fits the mold perfectly of what the Patriots would want in an interior blocker. He's nasty and physical and would garner comparisons to Logan Mankins.

Not that you can take too much from any mock draft, but just looking at this one...

-He doesn't have Tyler Lockett going at all in round 2. That could be the Bengals guy.

-He has Maxx Williams, the top TE in the draft, sliding past the Bengals all the way to 59.

-There's a whole lot of front 7 defensive talent still on the board at 53 in this mock. Preston Smith, Paul Dawson, Bernardrick McKinney, and Jordan Phillips (who Hobson mocked to the Bengals at 21).

NFL.com has Tyler Lockett projected to be taken in Rounds 3 - 4

Many others have him projected Round 2.

And Lapham on Wednesday night was on the radio talking about Ogbuehi in the first and Lockett in the 2nd...

I don't have a strong opinion on Lockett one way or the other, but I think he's a guy who is probably on the short list for the Bengals.

LB.  I want a badass LB.  I think the LB corps can be upgraded significantly if a nice LB is there in Rd 2.  DT wouldn't bother me either but the coaches are MUCH higher on Peko than most people here. Not to mention Pat Simms being back.  I hope it's LB in Rd 2 unless Landon Collins is available.

Paul Dawson next to taz would be incredible. I think our run defense would go from mediocre to kick ass again in no time. Get lamur off the field on running downs. Please please please.

Like happy said, lap name dropped Lockett. I have w feeling that's the guy unless someone swoops him.

Yes please.  It won't be a popular pick but I think he fits their D-Line perfectly.

Then again, I'm not as high on Gilberry as most people are and can easily see Smith replacing him long-term.  Could go with a line of:

LDE = Dunlap / Clarke, DT = Peko / Thompson, UT = Atkins / Sims,  RDE = Johnson / Smith.  That would leave Gilberry, Hunt and maybe a rookie DT competing for the last spot (assuming no injuries).  I don't see the other guys making it to be honest (Still, Montgomery, etc...).

I would feel a lot better about this draft (after the worthless for 2015 1st round pick) if the Bengals were selecting earlier in the second. There are a lot of difference makers there, but all of the ones I want (according to this mock) are gone by the time Bengals pick.

I'm not too keen on this but curiously, what would it take to trade (picks wise) in on one of these early 2nd round picks?
What would be a trade scenario for keeping our current 2nd rounder and getting another 2nd?
And what would be a trade scenario for swapping our 2nd rounders?

With the first round of the 2015 NFL Draft in the books, the second round is fast-approaching. While the first round is where cornerstone pieces are found, the second round provides plenty of starters and quality depth.

There are still a lot of really good football players left on the board. We could see a flurry of trades from teams trying to move up to get one Friday night.

Here's how the second round could play out:

Round 2

33. Tennessee Titans -- Jalen Collins, CB, LSU

Titans need cornerback help in a big way and Collins has first-round upside.

34. Tampa Bay Buccaneers -- Jake Fisher, OT, Oregon

Tampa Bay must find tackle help to protect its investment in Jameis Winston.

35. Oakland Raiders -- Donovan Smith, OT, Penn State

Big and strong, Smith provides a formidable frame to add to the Raiders' offensive line.

36. Jacksonville Jaguars -- Eric Rowe, CB, Utah

Rowe will likely remind Gus Bradley of his former pupils in Seattle, where he served as defensive coordinator.

37. New York Jets -- Eric Kendricks, ILB, UCLA

The most productive collegiate inside linebacker over the last three years goes to Todd Bowles.

38. Washington Redskins -- Owamagbe Odighizuwa, DE/OLB, UCLA

Washington needs an edge-setter with athleticism and "Owa" has been rising up draft boards.

39. Chicago Bears -- Landon Collins, S, Alabama

The Bears would be thrilled to see Collins available here, but he could be the target of a trade-up earlier than this spot.

40. New York Giants -- Carl Davis, DT, Iowa

Davis had a huge Senior Bowl week and the Giants could use his brand of strength and quickness.

41. St. Louis Rams -- Jaelen Strong, WR, Arizona State

This is about the right spot for Strong, and it is definitely the right fit for the WR-needy Rams.

42. Atlanta Falcons -- Eddie Goldman, NT, Florida State

The transition to a 3-4 defense needs a pass rusher and run stuffer. Goldman is the run stuffer.

43. Cleveland Browns -- Eli Harold, OLB, Virginia

Cleveland needs edge speed; Harold is one of the quickest upfield in this draft.

44. New Orleans Saints -- Devin Smith, WR, Ohio State

The Saints lost Kenny Stills but Smith is likely an upgrade.

45. Minnesota Vikings -- Dorial Green-Beckham, WR, Missouri

Teddy Bridgewater gets a boom-or-bust deep threat with the ability to come in and help right away.

46. San Francisco 49ers -- Ronald Darby, CB, Florida State

Darby didn't get the headlines that P.J. Williams received while at Florida State, but he's the more talented of the two.

47. Miami Dolphins -- P.J. Williams, CB, Florida State

Oh, hi, P.J.! I was just saying I love your game! ... Williams gives the Dolphins length and press-man coverage talent.

48. San Diego Chargers -- Jordan Phillips, NT, Oklahoma

Big-bodied interior player with rare quickness for a man his size. Has dominant potential, but must unlock it.

49. Kansas City Chiefs -- Preston Smith, DE, Mississippi State

Has great hands and will be a plus pass rusher as a 3-4 end in the Chiefs' scheme.

50. Buffalo Bills -- A.J. Cann, OG, South Carolina

Rex Ryan didn't have a first-round pick, but he is always looking to win in the trenches, and Cann helps that cause.

51. Houston Texans -- Tre' Jackson, OG, Florida State

Bill O'Brien wants to transition into a more power-based run game and Jackson has the size and talent to help in that effort.

52. Philadelphia Eagles -- Quinten Rollins, S, Miami (Ohio)

The Eagles could try Rollins at cornerback or safety, but what he flashed in only one year of college football was undeniable.

53. Cincinnati Bengals -- Grady Jarrett, NT, Clemson

One of the most disruptive interior defenders in this draft, Jarrett can fit right into the rotation for the Bengals.

54. Detroit Lions -- T.J. Clemmings, OT, Pittsburgh

Long fall for Clemmings, but a good spot for him if he ends up this far down the second-round board.

55. Arizona Cardinals -- Nate Orchard, OLB, Utah

Everyone knows the Cardinals need outside linebacker help. It's just a matter of what their draft grades look like at this spot.

56. Pittsburgh Stealers -- Maxx Williams, TE, Minnesota

Williams needs to improve as a run blocker, but he comes from NFL bloodlines and is the best pass-catching TE in this draft.

57. Carolina Panthers -- D'Joun Smith, CB, Florida Atlantic

Wiry frame with great man-cover talent. Smith's quick-twitch athleticism is a welcome sight in Carolina.

58. Baltimore Ravens -- Duke Johnson, RB, Miami (Fla.)

Johnson is an electric running back with the best zone-scheme skills of any rusher in this draft.

59. Denver Broncos -- Mitch Morse, OG, Missouri

Morse has been flying up draft boards lately. The former tackle transitions to guard or center and fits Gary Kubiak's offense perfectly.

60. Dallas Cowboys -- Randy Gregory, DE, Nebraska

Sources tell me Gregory is off the draft board for many teams, but Dallas might not be able to pass on him if he's still available.

61. Indianapolis Colts -- Paul Dawson, ILB, TCU

Dawson didn't win the combine, but there were no other inside 'backers in college football who made more plays than him.

62. Green Bay Packers -- Benardrick McKinney, ILB, Mississippi State

McKinney can be a little bit plodding and limited at times, but he's steady and a great tackler, which is a need inside for Green Bay.

63. Seattle Seahawks -- Michael Bennett, DT, Ohio State

Winning with quickness is a Seattle trademark, and Bennett is a plus pass rusher from the interior spot.

64. New England Patriots -- Tyler Lockett, WR, Kansas State

This might seem early for Lockett, but he is an outstanding return man who has Wes Welker's competitiveness from the slot.
