If Guenther is not under contract with the bengals for '17 then how can they block him from interviewing with other teams? Guenther signed a three-year deal in January '14. 2016 was his last season. I can not find anything anywhere that says he has re-signed with the Bengals. What am I missing here? You made me question that as well. Looks like the 3 year extension he signed began in 2015 after his 2014 contract expired, and was for 2015, 2016, and 2017. http://local12.com/sports/bengals/guenther-says-hes-under-contract-with-bengals-for-2017-and-plans-return That's the only way it makes sense... BBR
I assumed it was because the 2016 League year hadn't officially ended yet. So they could still block the request for a few more weeks which would be a real dick move if he wanted to do the interview.

It would makes sense that most of the coaches contracts expire after the 2017 season so if there is an new HC he will be able to hire his guys and not be stuck with holdovers from the last regime. Also, MB would not have to fire anyone, he has a mental block against doing such things after his poor paw was fired by that mean ol' Art Moddell.
