The Bengals needed a better performance from their offensive line and secondary than those displayed in Monday night’s loss in Indianapolis if they wanted to take command in the chase for a Wild Card spot against a Denver team staring at the exact same 8-6 scenario.

[b]Joseph again lined up in place of Deltha O’Neal, the former Bronco beaten for two touchdowns Monday night in his first game back in a month. Although Levi Jones dressed for the second straight week since undergoing arthroscopic knee surgery two months, Whitworth got his 10th straight start.[/b] He’s coming off the worst outing of the season, although he wasn’t at fault for all of Colts defensive end Dwight Freeney’s three sacks.

In order for the Bengals to clinch a Wild Card Sunday and make next week’s regular-season finale at home against the stealers moot, they had to beat Denver, the Patriots had to beat Jacksonville (or the Dolphins have to beat the visiting Jets Monday night) while the Titans had to beat the Bills.

So far, so good. The Pats and Titans had halftime leads.[/quote]
