Jones: Porter part of `cowardly act'

The Bengals went back to work this morning on the first day of their offseason strength and conditioning program.

Left tackle Levi Jones, the cut above his left eye still visible, talked about his altercation in a Las Vegas casino last month with Dolphins linebacker Joey Porter. Most of the $40,000 worth of jewelry Jones said he lost in the fight has been returned to police and is being kept as evidence.

"It was like that, it was problematic for me and my family, especially when the true story wasn't out there," Jones said. "The particulars about how everything went down, I mean, ESPN, all they wanted to report was Joey Porter hit me in the face. Six guys attacked me from behind before he did it. When the true story came out, ESPN still didn't want to report it."

Jones called it a "cowardly act."

He recalled the event t the Palms casino.

"He (Porter) got my attention from the front, and wouldn't get near me until the six guys jumped me from behind, he took part," Jones said. "What started everything was the dude hit me from behind. From then on, I had to protect myself. I was attacked by seven guys. I don't know what man is going to withstand that, especially with an NFL player involved."

Jones said he needed no stitches.

He did not say if he would file a civil suit.

"We'll see how it plays out," he said.

Jones has had two arthroscopic operations on his left knee since the middle of last season.

"I want to get in the best shape I can and get the season underway," he said. "I'm pretty excited about where it (the health of his knee) is."

In other news this morning:

-- Wide receiver Tab Perry said he has been cleared medically to participate fully in physical activity. He suffered what he called a bone bruise to his hip. He missed the final 14 games. Doctors cleared him last week.

-- Quarterback Carson Palmer said he is enjoying the offseason without questions and concerns about the health of his left knee. Palmer is working out and researching how Japanese baseball pitchers strengthen their throwing arms.
anytime it takes more than one on one to fight... it shows lack of courage. porter shows that.
glad to see tab is cleared!!!
and we all knew #9 AKA Superman would be good to go. I look for his mechanics to get better this year now that the knee has had even more time to heal.

I think it is pretty lame that ESPN started yawning as soon as there were no more Bengal related punchlines to get in.

I know it has been said before but can you imagine if the situation was reversed?
Exact same circumstances, except that it was Levi and 6 guys that jumped Porter.
You KNOW that shit would be on the ESPN ticker 24/7.

Ahh but they just covered the story long enough to say that Levi got his ass beat by Porter. No mention of his crew. End with a soundbite of Miami saying they like Porter's "fire".

That pretty much sums it up and is really really lame on ESPN's part.

Dude the Bengals in the 90s were COMICAL. They deserved that nickname. If anything, Mike Brown created the AFC North Champion Cincinnati Bengals.

But ESPN and the rest of the national sports media knows the Bengals are legit now. Yet they still pile on.

I agree though... what else is new. Well, time for the "Yankees/Red Sox News" now, aka "ESPN, from April to September."
Jones: Vegas fracas an ambush
Says he was grabbed before Porter punch

BY MARK CURNUTTE | MCURNUTTE@ENQUIRER.COM

The cut had not gone away in 15 days.

Left tackle Levi Jones, the gash above his left eye still visible, talked Monday about his altercation in a Las Vegas casino last month with Dolphins linebacker Joey Porter.

"Six guys attacked me from behind before he did it. When the true story came out, ESPN still didn't want to report it."

Jones called it a "cowardly act."

Jones was jumped March 18 at the Palms casino.

"He (Porter) got my attention from the front and wouldn't get near me until the six guys jumped me from behind, (then) he took part," Jones said. "What started everything was the dude hit me from behind. From then on, I had to protect myself. I was attacked by seven guys. I don't know what man is going to withstand that, especially with an NFL player involved."

Porter was charged with misdemeanor battery and released. He reported to the Dolphins' offseason program the next day.

Jones said he needed no stitches. He did not say if he would file a civil suit.

"We'll see how it plays out," he said.

Jones has had two arthroscopic operations on his left knee since the middle of last season. The knee and ankle injuries limited him to six games in 2006.

"I want to get in the best shape I can and get the season underway," he said. "I'm pretty excited about where it (the health of his knee) is."

Levi shadowed by fight in Las Vegas
Bengals tackle says he was the victim

By Kevin Goheen
Post staff reporter

Bengals left tackle Levi Jones would just as soon go about his business of getting ready for the 2007 season quietly. Jones had no such luck on Monday, the opening day of the Bengals' offseason conditioning program.

Try as he might, the protector of Carson Palmer's backside couldn't avoid reporters and television cameras when he arrived at Paul Brown Stadium. Jones played in just seven games last season due to a torn meniscus in his left knee, but the topic of conversation wasn't his health but his headline-grabbing fight with ex-pissburgh linebacker Joey Porter at a Las Vegas casino last month.

Porter, now with the Miami Dolphins, was cited for misdemeanor battery in the incident that started with trash talking at a blackjack table at the Palms Casino and ended up with Jones fighting against Porter and six associates. Jones said $40,000 worth of jewelry was taken from him, most of which has been returned to Las Vegas police as evidence. Jones lives in Las Vegas during the offseason.

"What started everything was a guy hitting me from behind. From that point on I had to defend myself," said Jones, who was not seriously injured in the fight. "It was a cowardly act. (Porter) got my attention from the front and wouldn't get near me but when the six guys jumped me from behind he took part."

The Bengals made plenty of headlines last season for misbehavior off of the field but in this instance Jones was the victim. It was still unwanted news for Jones and the organization.

"To be on the news like that was problematic for me and my family, especially when the true story wasn't really out there, not the particulars about what went down," said Jones. "ESPN, all they wanted to report was that Joey Porter hit me in the face and not that six guys attacked me from behind before he did it. It was problematic for me and my family for a while until the true story came out, and when the true story came out ESPN still didn't want to talk about it."

Jones and Porter have played against each other since the Bengals drafted Jones in the first round in 2002. Porter played as an outside linebacker in pissburgh's 3-4 defensive scheme. The Bengals and Dolphins play in Miami this season but Miami plays a 4-3 alignment with All-Pro defensive end Jason Taylor being the Dolphins' main pass rushing threat.

"When we play Joey's team. I've got Jason Taylor to deal with. I'm not worried about Joey Porter," said Jones, although he's aware the storyline will receive plenty of attention the week of the game. "I'm sure it's going to be like this."

NEW YEAR - Carson Palmer has a lot to be excited about this offseason, not the least of which is not having to answer constant and repetitive questions regarding his left knee. Palmer's rehab progress dominated the Bengals offseason last year but the quarterback is back on a normal routine this year.

"It's a weird feeling. Last year I had been here already for a couple of months, rehabbing and training but now I come in and don't have to answer question after question about the knee and how your mental state is going to be," said Palmer, who became the first Cincinnati quarterback to throw for more than 4,000 yards last season.

The Bengals will run their offseason program for the next 13 weeks. Included in that time is a mandatory mini-camp June 1-3 and 14 organized team activity days. Palmer's rehab forced him to miss many of those workouts last year, time that could have been spent working with receivers Chad Johnson and T.J. Houshmandzadeh.

"My whole game is rhythm and timing, as well as Chad's and T.J.'s and all of the receivers," said Palmer. "To have the opportunity to work with them and then get the side work with my fundamentals and mechanics, which is something I'd gotten away from, I'm excited about that and anticipating that."

MEET THE COMMISH - Wide receiver Chris Henry is scheduled to meet with NFL commissioner Roger Goodell today in New York to discuss the tougher new personal conduct policy Goodell plans on implementing this month. Henry and Tennessee cornerback Adam Jones are to meet with Goodell about numerous off-field incidents they each have been involved in over the past two years.

Goodell's policy has not been fully formalized but its goal is to provide for swifter and more decisive punishment for players who have repeated offenses. Henry has been arrested five times since November 2005, the latest being on three traffic citations in downtown Cincinnati two weeks ago. One of those citations was for driving with a suspended license. Jones has had 10 separate incidents with the police since the Titans drafted him with the No. 6 overall pick in 2005.

Both players face possible league suspension.

"I don't know what he can expect because I don't know what the commissioner is thinking," said fellow wide receiver T.J. Houshmandzadeh, who was part of a group of players that met with the commissioner at the NFL scouting combine in February and voiced their concerns about overall player conduct. "I'm sure Chris is nervous. I talked to him before he headed to the airport. I told him to relax and be himself. I think Chris has learned his lesson about getting in trouble."

POLLACK UPDATE - Linebacker David Pollack is working out at Paul Brown Stadium with all of the enthusiasm he's shown from the day the Bengals drafted him in the first round in 2005. It has yet to be determined whether Pollack will be able to play this season, or ever again, after suffering a broken neck in the second game of last season while making a tackle against Cleveland but Pollack isn't lacking any effort.

Pollack has declined to speak publicly about his health status since it became known last December that he would need surgery to repair his neck. He declined comment again on Monday, through the Bengals public relations department, but that didn't keep him from meeting up with teammates in the locker room.

Standing on a scale, Pollack raised his arms in a muscle-flexing pose as he noted his weight was up to 257 pounds.

BROOKS SIGNS - Restricted free agent cornerback Greg Brooks signed his one-year tender offer of $850,000 on Monday. Brooks, a sixth-round draft choice in 2004, has seen little action in his three seasons with the Bengals due to various injuries, including spending the final eight weeks of last season on injured reserve due to a knee injury.

The Bengals have three restricted free agents who have yet to sign their tender offers - linebackers Caleb Miller and Landon Johnson and offensive lineman Stacy Andrews. The restricted free agency period ends on April 20.
Well, it finally made ESPN's front page. But still a very very poor article of the account. Hey ESPN, why don't you mention the police report that validated Levi's comments? No, you leave it as one man's account. Not the video showed Levi was assaulted by 7 guys.

It is a start, at least they posted something....

Jones: I got jumped before Porter hit meESPN.com news services

Cincinnati Bengals left tackle Levi Jones is still sporting a gash over his left eye from an altercation in a Las Vegas casino two weeks ago.

And he says ex-stealers linebacker Joey Porter is not the only one to blame.

Jones told the Cincinnati Enquirer that he was jumped by six other men from behind before Porter hit him. Porter, now with the Miami Dolphins, was cited by police for misdemeanor battery and released. Police said the players, rivals on the field, exchanged trash talk at a casino blackjack table before the fracas.

Jones called it a "cowardly act," the Enquirer reported.

"[Porter] got my attention from the front and wouldn't get near me until the six guys jumped me from behind, [then] he took part," Jones told the Enquirer. "What started everything was the dude hit me from behind. From then on, I had to protect myself. I was attacked by seven guys. I don't know what man is going to withstand that, especially with an NFL player involved."

"It was like that, it was problematic for me and my family, especially when the true story wasn't out there," Jones told the newspaper. "The particulars about how everything went down, I mean, ESPN, all they wanted to report was Joey Porter hit me in the face."

Jones, who did not need stitches, would not say if he would file a civil suit, the Enquirer reported.

"We'll see how it plays out," he told the newspaper.
Love it when they clean up the grammar without acknowledging the fact properly through parenthesis, etc.

Last night I was flipping through the channels and I heard a guy on NFL Network saying that something had to be done to Jones over the incident in Vegas. I was about to blow my top until I realized he was talking about Pac Man.

It wouldn' surprise me if the Jones and by extension the Bengals got blamed for this incident too.
