10 Truths: Keyshawn was fine

OK, I'm heavy on NFL broadcaster talk and Chad Johnson early in this column. But I get to other stuff. Stick with me.

Here are your 10 NFL Truths for Week 8:

10. Let me tip my hat to ESPN's Keyshawn Johnson for his wonderful, tension-filled interview with Chad Johnson last weekend.

Keyshawn confronted Mr. Bojangles in a way that the majority of broadcasters and journalists wouldn't dare. Keyshawn is receiving some criticism for the interview because you could argue that Keyshawn — sans the elaborate TD celebrations — was a disruptive locker-room force during his playing career much like Chad Johnson. Remember, Keyshawn is the guy who jealously attacked Wayne Chrebet for no reason.

That bit of hypocrisy didn't bother me because Keyshawn is no longer a player. He's a member of the media, and he performed his job beautifully. That's all I can ask as a viewer.

Well, I do wish Keyshawn had pointed out to Chad that the Bengals haven't won a damn thing in Chad's era. In his one playoff game, Chad melted down at halftime with the Bengals holding a lead simply because he hadn't caught enough passes. Chad Johnson foolishly believes he's a "winner."

There's no evidence of that.

9. ESPN's version of "60 Minutes" — "E:60" — has a chance to be one of the most entertaining shows on TV, if it would stick to just airing the "pitch meetings."

Based on reporter/Around the Horn debater Michael Smith's pitch of a story on Chad Johnson, E:60 might be the most honest, unintentionally funny show on cable.

Let me say this off the top: I'm a Michael Smith fan. He's a young brother with talent and passion for the profession. But developing, nurturing and guiding talented young brothers and sisters is not ESPN's strength.

Overexposing them, putting them in positions they're not ready for and pushing them to be more like Stuart Scott is what ESPN does best. Stephen A. Smith was well on his way to being one of the most important sports journalists today until ESPN executives snatched him and put him in position to fail with a TV talk show.

Is Michael Smith next? If he's caught on camera one more time trying to explain to a group of grown folks why Chad Johnson's shucking, jiving and bojangling are "easily one of the most compelling moments in pro football today, if not all of sports for that matter ... Like, everybody is watching to see what he's going to do."

The look on Lisa Salters' face as Smith pitched this load of garbage was priceless. Watch the 11-minute pitch video. I can't do it justice. Seriously, at one point Salters' gasped in disgust and the room broke into nervous laughter when Smith tried to put a positive spin on Johnson having four kids by three different women.

Oh, this was raw, unvarnished truth that really needs to be aired in its entirety. The pitch meeting was far more enlightening, entertaining and honest than the actual package on Johnson. You got a real look at how the media operate and why we broadcast and publish so many fairytales.

When Smith tried to convince his colleagues that there was something terribly unique about a black man playing the clown to the delight of mainstream, corporate America, all I could think about is that "Roots" needs to be re-aired in primetime. It's like we forgot Fiddler, the original Chad Johnson.
We pay these athletes to win at all costs and we are supposed to be shocked that they don't their other parts of life so seriously. Why are we not pointing out that Tom Brady has a kid with a woman that he broke up with? Oh that's right, he's on a soon to be Super Bowl team, pray to god our Bengals don't win it all because they wouldn't know what to write.

He was alway on the Kansas City Radio stations when I lived there. He has played more the race card more time than the Rev. Jesse Jackson. He has admited to loving the Ravens. As such, you can tell he went lightly on Ray Lewis if you were to read the full article above.

It's the culture we live in with pro atheletes now. Chad having fathered several children with three different mothers isn't something to be proud of...it is what we have now. Chad should have worn a condom. Chad shouldn't have tried to beat up his WR coach at halftime in the Pissburgh game, etc.
Chad isn't our main problem, but his selfish behavior is symptomatic of the "forgive superstar atheletes at all costs as long as they produce for your team" attitude we as fans have adpoted now.
It is bulllshit, but...it is what it is.
Now go out and actually score for the home team against the Steelers for once, Chad.
Do it for your illegitimate kids....think of their legacy....

I love how Chad "leading receiver in the NFL" Johnson is now no longer just responsible for the Bengals and their 30th ranked defense being 2-4. He is also, somehow, responsible for all of the ills that African Americans face in society.

Brilliant!

Seriously, did anyone watch the ESPN pitch video? Michael Smith can't sell for shit. It seriously sounded to me like he had no good idea for a new story and decided to re-hash the same old "Who really knows 85."

I quit watching after 3 minutes
Keyshawn Johnson Gets Punked and It’s Not On MTV

I thought I had seen it all week before last week when the cast of Terrell Owens haters they call analysts on ESPN’s NFL Countdown rode Owens into the ground once again. They somehow turned Randy Moss into an all around great guy and made Owens out to be the NFL’s version of Saddam Hussein.

Tom Jackson despises Terrell Owens and no matter how hard he tries to hide it, he just can’t seem to do it. Keyshawn Johnson up until week before last was pretty good at hiding his contempt for Owens. Neither of the two while in the league came anywhere close to being the talent that Owens is and it appears that they both suffer from a real bad case of Owens envy. Is there anybody else willing to stake their credibility on turning Randy Moss into a hero just so they could dis Owens? I mean seriously, we are talking about the same Randy Moss that Oakland Raiders fans and the media last year called a cancer.

How Keyshawn of all people could call any player in the league a cancer I will never know. He dislikes Owens so much that he had the nerve to say on camera that he talked to a player on the Dallas Cowboys who spoke negatively about Terrell in confidence to him. This has to be the first time in the history of jocks becoming analysts that an ex-player would go to this length to throw dirt on a player. Mind you this is the same Keyshawn Johnson that got thrown off of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers mid-season with not a single Buc speaking in his favor, yet many of them explained how Johnson ran his mouth way to much and it was time for him to go.

If that wasn’t enough, this Sundays interview with Chad Johnson was hilarious. Keyshawn had the nerve to ask Chad did he think he was a disruption to the team. The Cincinnati Bengals offence is one of the top offences in the league. Rather than talk about the real problem with the Bengals which is actually their defense, which by the way is third worst in the league, Keyshawn through his interview would have us believe that Chad Johnson is the real reason the Bengals are struggling this year.

Near the end of the interview with Chad, Keyshawn decided to go for the throat when he told Chad that his end zone antics are nothing more than an act. He purposely tried to make Chad look like a clown and ended up giving him the greatest comeback of the year. When Keyshawn asked Chad why he does what he does, he replied with a straight face, “I learned it from you.”

Punked indeed.

Well he sure as hell made a point not to answer the question about whether he wants to be in Cincinnati, twice.
