From Bengals public relations:

The Bengals today signed free agent HB Cedric Benson and placed HB DeDe Dorsey on the Reserve/Injured list. Dorsey, a third-year player from Lindenwood College, played in this season's first four games but suffered a hamstring injury last weekend against Cleveland.

Benson (5-11, 220; Texas) is a fourth-year NFL player. He was Chicago's first-round selection in the 2005 draft (fourth overall) after a Texas career that included 5540 rushing yards and the third-most touchdowns (64) in NCAA history.

Benson played in 35 games with 12 starts for the Bears from 2005-07, rushing for 1593 yards on 420 carries (3.8) with 10 TDs. He also had 26 receptions for 180 yards. He had an additional 104 rushing yards with a TD and 24 receiving yards in the 2006 postseason, as Chicago advanced to Super Bowl XLI against Indianapolis.

Last season, though missing five games with an injury, he posted career highs for rushing yards (674), receptions (17) and receiving yards (123). He started Games 1-11, but suffered a season-ending ankle injury on Nov. 25 vs. Denver and was placed Nov. 27 on Chicago's Reserve/Injured list.
Well it didn't take long...
BENSON TO THE BENGALS
Posted by Mike Florio on September 30, 2008, 4:12 p.m.

At a time when the Cincinnati Bengals seemed to be the favorite to land 2005 NFL MVP Shaun Alexander, a native of nearby Florence, Kentucky, the Bengals threw the league a curveball on Tuesday, signing tailback Cedric Benson.

The team has announced via a press release the addition of Benson. He’ll replace DeDe Dorsey, who has been placed on injured reserve.

Benson was the fourth overall pick in the 2005 draft. The Bears dumped him after a lackluster 2007 season as the clear-cut starter — and after two alcohol-related arrests in less than a month. Though a grand jury opted last week not to indict Benson on any of the pending charges, the decision of the Bengals to add a player with a troubled past will only reinforce the team’s standing as a franchise that simply doesn’t care about the perception that more than a few of its players are turds.

Hey, but at least those talented-but-flawed players are helping the Bengals win lots of football games.

Crazy. He was soft in Chicago. What makes them think he won't be soft here, especially behind our line.
You think this is a football move? Mikey is a "Forgiver." Its his weakness...this entire thing is really just a freindly jesture to get Benson back on his feet because Mikey is in the business of saving lives, not winning football games.

The Bengals signed running back Chris Benson on Tuesday to fill a need at running back. With injuries to DeDe Dorsey and Kenny Watson, and Chris Perry struggling, Benson can help fill that need.

To make room for Benson, the Bengals put Dorsey on the Reserved-Injured list.

Benson was the No. 4 overall pick in the 2005 NFL Draft the Chicago Bears. He was released by the Bears before the season after two arrests in Texas for alcohol-related incidents. Both charges were recently dropped.

Benson played 35 games in three seasons for the Bears, with 12 starts. He had 1,593 yards rushing on 420 carries with 10 TDs. He also had 26 receptions for 180 yards.

Last season, Benson missed five games with an ankle injury, bet set career highs for rushing yards (674), receptions (17) and receiving yards (123), starting the first 11 games of the season.

This is a better move than either James Johnson or Shaun Alexander. It may not work out, but Benson is a better option than either of those. Johnson isn't good enough and Alexander is too old.
My wife is a die hard Bears fan and laughed when I told her but think about it
for a minute. The guy is set for life with the signing bonus he received in
Chicago so I dont think he's just wanting to collect a paycheck. Im sure he's
heard about "being soft" just like the rest of us have. He may have a major
chip on his shoulder and he may believe he can help an 0-4 team so who knows.

The guy was a beast in college. Maybe he came out of college thinking he could
breeze through life in the NFL, realized he couldnt got into some trouble and out
of the trouble and has realized all of this.

I seriously hope it works out.
Man, kind of wish we had Steiny still. What are the odds of having two guys on the roster w/ prior BWI (Boating While Intoxicated) convictions!?!?!?!

He wasn't convicted... or even indicted for that matter.

The grand jury decided there sholdnt be charges leveled against him, and if you bothered to do your homework, there was a HUGE flap over his arrests, claiming he was being targeted.

We ALL know that things like that NEVER happen to athlete's don't we?

Maybe I'd buy that on a single arrest. But this guy was getting pinched at a Chris Henry clip. Where there is smoke, there is Chris Hen......err......well, you know the rest.

If you think that signing Benson is a good thing you need your head examined.

The rest of the league is laughing at us. Detroit had their chance to sign Benson and passed for a more expensive Rudi.
