Is everyone picking their favorite bands or actually naming who they think is the best bands? Best bands in what genre? What era? Hell Lawrence Welk is the best bubbly wubbly band of all time no?
Glen Miller Band is considered the best Big Band of all time by some.
Best band of the fifties could be Buddy Holly and the Crickets
Sixties saw the Beatles and Stones among other British invaders.
Seventies was Led Zeppelin for heavy metal in its infancy, Eagles for a soft country rock, Jimi Hendrix Experience for Psycodelic rock and on and on and on.

My favorite artist or group is Clapton followed closely by Jimmy Reed, Howlin Wolf
Omar and the Howlers and Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers when Im in a bluesey frame of mind ( which is most allways)..
I like Rob Thomas, 3 Doors Down and Neil Young and Crazy Horse too..

Best band of all time? Who knows...it's like asking who is the greatest actor of all time...

Impossible question to answer, but I'm pretty sure it isn't CCR...you'd pick them over the Beatles? Wow...I mean, like, wow....
Zep was a behemoth that spanned two decades...
Stones are STILL playing (although there's a vicious rumor going around that Disney animatronics robots are responsible for that....)
U2 is an excellent band that's been around 20+ years...
Pink Floyd...
Frank Zappa....
Eagles....
King Crimson...
Rush...
and those are just older bands!

...but CCR? Sure they were good, but the best? Certainly not as musicians...
But hey! This is an entirely subjective topic, so someone could pick the Bay City Rollers for all I care...

this is really funny i was just thinking about this question after downloading a bunch of CCR last night... not that i dont think they arnt a great band, but i just dont think they are the best... i guess it all depends on how u word the question, i guess i could see the beatles, led zepplin, or pink floyd as being some of the best bands in history although CCR sure did have a hell of alot of hits

I wouldn`t call any band the "greatest" ...but AC/DC is
1 of my favorites.

Kiss, Pink Floyd, Rush, Motely Crue, Van Halen, Def Leppard,
Pearl Jam, Nirvana are some of my other favorites.

I like The Offspring, Nickleback, Puddle of Mudd, and quite a few
other newer bands too...

Back to topic:
Greatest band of all time?

Depends on my mood.

Metallica
Pearl Jam
Led Zep

If you put a gun to my head and I had to pick one... I'd probably go with Zeppelin. Metallica has really slipped recently and PJ has some songs that don't really do anything for me. Right now, I can't really think of a BAD song that LZ did.

As an aside: didn't we do this thread once before?

I have about 250 LPs, mostly of Jazz and some classic rock, so I have a few opinions on the subject.

Led Zeppelin
[post="94562"]<{POST_SNAPBACK}>[/post]
If you like Led Zeppelin, I suggest you listen to Spirit. Led Zeppelin opened for them a few times (and Jimmy Page stole a lot of ideas from Robbie California and the rest of Spirit).

Best Album.

Listen to "Taurus." Note the opening riff.
Led Zeppelin debuted to one of the worst critical assaults of all times-even fellow musicians thought they were crap.
Spirit is a better band, but the first Led Zeppelin album (and the 4th one) definately have their good moments.

also, Climbing! is pretty good, if only because Felix Pappalardi is connected to Cream, which is the best band in the history of the universe. This is coming from someone who absolutely hates Eric Clapton (because he is a racist asshole-"Jimi Hendrix is not a very good guitar player at all...everyone assumes that 'spades' have big dicks..."). Jack Bruce (who wrote most of their tunes and sang all of them) is a musical genious, and his post-cream solo albums are pretty hot, as well.

CCR has great stuff (especially on Cosmos Factory), but it gets repetitive after a while, and all of Fogerty's post-CCR material is pretty poor.

Fun Musical Facts:
1.) The guitar solo in "Comfortably Numb" is actually made up of 7 or 8 different solos, which were peiced together to make the band sound like it was of talent.
2.)After hearing "Are You Experienced?"-Jimi's worst album-Eric Clapton and Pete Townshend met in a british movie theater to discuss how to keep their jobs.
3.) A good Pharaoh Sanders or Coltrane album blows any classic rock album out of the water with ease.

A couple of things...

I'm also a fan of Spirit. Twelve Dreams is one of my favorite albums. I even know that it's Randy California, not Robbie. To say that Spirit is a better band than Zeppelin is....well....silly. At least in any measurable way. Maybe you think they were better, but as with all music, "good" is subjective. A million bands are better technical musicians than Zeppelin, or most popular bands, but that doesn't make them unequivocally "better". Jimmy Page, like all musicians, "stole" things from every one he ever listened to and liked.

Cream is the best band in the history of the universe????? Again, I'm a fan of Cream, but come on....

I agree with you about CCR.

But anyway, that's not why I called.... This is:

The guitar solo in "Comfortably Numb" is actually made up of 7 or 8 different solos, which were peiced together to make the band sound like it was of talent.

If you believe this, you have no credibility with me as far as music goes. First of all, there's nothing spectacular about the guitar solo in Comfortably Numb. As with most David Gilmore riffs, it's not about speed or technical difficulty. It's about style and class. Pink Floyd were innovators with multi track recording, sequencing, splicing, overdubbing, etcetera, but it wasn't "peiced together to make the band sound like it was of talent". It was the artistic combination of technology and conventional instrumentation, combined with simple, yet extremely insightful metaphorical lyrics that WAS the talent behind Pink Floyd.

There are thousands of better technical musicians out there that no one's ever heard of than any group that's ever been popular. People like Al DiMeola, and even Jeff Beck are better guitar players technically than people like Gilmore or Page, but even though I'm a fan of both DiMeola and Beck, I'd usually rather listen to Gilmore or Page.

The best music touches your soul. As much as I appreciate the talent of many jazz musicians, I'd rather listen to fingernails on a chalkboard than most jazz. I'd rather listen to blood curdling screams from burning babies being eaten by barking dogs than rap, but that's just me. To each his own, but to say "peiced together to make the band sound like it was of talent" is complete, and utter bullshit, I don't care what gay, fucked in the head music critic might have written it.

And for the record, if anyone deserves the title of the greatest band ever, all things considered, The Beatles are on their own level. That doesn't mean I'd rather listen to them than anything else, but they are the undisputable kings overall.

I have never really like Pink Floyd. Something about music existing only within a studio seems hackneyed or artificial.
If you believe this, you have no credibility with me as far as music goes.
Oh well, I guess.

I just can't enjoy listening to Pink Floyd. It just doesn't sound like music.
This, however
,
was a good album.

I don't really like the Who either.
I think part of my problem with music is that you can become oversaturated with it. This would provide a pretty good explanation for my loathing of Zeppelin and Pink Floyd, since that is all that gets air time on 92.5, etc.

Also, British bands annoy me by and large. I make an exception for Jack Bruce and Ginger Baker, only because they were absolutely magnificent.
Give me a good American Band any day...
King Crimson
The Band
The Byrds (esp. on "Sweetheart of the Rodeo")
Flying Burrito Bros. (only on the first two albums)

Even though they are all white kids just the same as the mopheads across the way, the fact that they are American connects them more closely with the blues and folk musicians at the heart of Rock.

To me, Pink Floyd is soul-less music.
I think you are listening to the wrong jazz.
I would be interested in hearing blood curdling screams from... as well
Why else would Gilmore record 8 different solos and then splice and put them together?

And another thing that pisses me off. Old people trying to tour again. Just hang it up already. Paul McCartney went from moderately annoying (except the Hofner Bass, which kicked ass) to totally annoying.

Anyway, say what you want about Abortion or the Administration, but nothing will seperate people faster than a good old fashioned musical disagreement.

I, for example, have seriously considered tracking down and killing Morrissey, because he pisses me off so much.
