So I went to find out about this. Yahoo Finance had an article.

That article was in July and they have been calling for a recession since the end of the Pandemic, so who knows, but the stat in the tweet was a bit concerning.

The corruption is so obvious but people seem to just ignore it

1. Gerrymandering in Ohio is so completely blatant that a republican supreme court is striking it down. How can anyone view it as anything but corrupt?

2. The January 6th insurrection was so batshit crazy and the response from the republican party has been to minimize it as if it was a riot gone bad....if that crowd found Pelosi she is executed.

3. There is no evidence that the election was rigged in any way however many republicans still believe this? Trump literally tried to pressure the attorney general of Georgia to find votes and they don't blink an eye over this. 

4. Trump already indicated if he was in power he would threaten to use nukes against Putin....don't even blink. 

5. Marjorie Taylor Greene attends a white supremacy conference....all good.

6. Madison Cawthorn and others have talked about how Ukrainian leadership is just propped up by America. He and Tucker and others seem to be rooting for Russia. 

7. This ignores absurd culture war things like CRT. If you take one second to look at the headlines on CNN vs Fox, you get news on one site and culture war on the other. How do people not see this?

8. Didn't/Don't beleieve in Covid despite 20 Million excess deaths worldwide

9. The candidates for Senate from Ohio couldn't be worse. They are as bad as it gets. 

10. 7 hours of call logs missing from the president on January 6th?

I am all for a second party that pushes for fiscal responsibility but this has gotten crazy. What happened to this party?

2. Send in your militarized police forces to brutally squash peaceful student protests on college campuses across the country

Doing a great job mobilizing, that's for sure. Just not in their favor.

My question was what Putin might do if the counterattack in Kursk gains momentum.  IDK what his red line might be - UKR forces are still 80-100km from Kursk, city of - but I have to think he has one in mind.  Oddly, being on Russian territory makes something unconventional seem more likely.

I picked up The Quiet Damage: QAnon and the Destruction of the American Family by Jesselyn Cook.  She has done extensive interviews with families that have 'lost' family members to the QAnon and those kind of beliefs. Interesting how seemingly normal folks have been pulled in and convinced of some terrible shit.  I'm about 1/2 way through and it is probably worth a read if the topic seems interesting to you.  Very sad at times and many of you have probably see similar things happen to some friends / family.

Just want to say that today is the 50th anniversary of the end of that war. I was on a Med cruise at the time, but one of my best buds (and fellow Cincinnatian) was on a destroyer off the coast.

I'm against book bans in general, and I haven't read this book (nor do I intend to), but this one, if if winds up being banned, I find that hilarious.

Lots of other issues on the state ballots, not to mention control of the house where Johnson intends to refuse to certify any Harris/Walz victory. Already lawsuits in several states meant to invalidate blocks of voters.

Basically we're witnessing a concerted attack on democracy & the next few months are going to be.. interesting.

His presidency has been much maligned, but he accomplished a lot post presidency, and you can’t question his commitment to make the world a better place.

I'm wondering if anyone has insight into 'our' relationship with Elon and the US Government.  Between Starlink / satellites / Space X / etc.  it seems, to me, that we are overly entagled with his companies.  Isn't this a huge security risk?  Are kids gloves being used with him in some instances because of this?

I haven't really looked into any of this.  I just have this sense of dread and I'm wondering if anyone might informed perspective.

In my neck of the woods housing/homelessness/etc. was a hot topic during the senate race.  Unfortunately Montana voted at Senator that very much wants to privatize private lands. 

Mass deportation is only going to exacerbate the issue here.

The Montana U.S. Senate race took a turn when controversial businessman Tim Sheehy said that the U.S. should eliminate the Department of Education because it was turning children into slaves.

 

The Huffington Post this week flagged a report from the Daily Montanan, which revealed the comments from the Republican candidate at a campaign stop in Billings.

 

“We have a Department of Education, which I don’t think we need any more,” said Sheehy, on audio clips obtained by the Montanan. “It should go away. That’ll save us $30 billion right there.”

 

“We formed that department so little Black girls could go to school down South and we could have integrated schooling. We don’t need that anymore,” he continued.

 

The plan comes from Project 2025, which calls for the elimination of the DoE as well as other moves that would overhaul the federal government.

 

A National Education Association analysis said Project 2025 would “gut” education funding and hurt vulnerable students, HuffPo cited.

 

The report also said, "Kids Count data show 89.6% of students in kindergarten through 12th grade attend public school in Montana."

In another campaign stop last year, Sheehy said that young people in the U.S. have "been indoctrinated for too long." He went on to blame abortion.

 

Sheehy said at another campaign stop last year of young women voters that “abortion is their No. 1 concern. It’s all they want to talk about. They are single-issue voters.”

 

Republicans began supporting the anti-education crusade when President Jimmy Carter promoted the Education Secretary to a Cabinet-level position.

 

“We formed that department so little Black girls could go to school down south, and we could have integrated schooling. We don’t need that anymore," said Sheehy.

 

Montana gets about $40 million from the Department of Education just for students with disabilities alone. It's only 15% of the overall education budget, said Lance Melton, head of the Montana School Boards Association.

 

“Fairly significant harm would be implemented in Montana’s public schools if we suddenly snapped our fingers and said, ‘No more federal funding of education,’” he said.

 

Sen. Jon Tester (D-MT) is in the fight of his political life against Sheehy.

 

“Tim Sheehy doesn’t give a damn about our public schools. I’m a proud product of Montana’s public schools and a former public school teacher—and I’ll fight to protect them with all I’ve got,” he said on X, formerly Twitter.

 

It isn't the first time Sheehy has been caught using racially charged language when he thinks the cameras aren't on. During a September event, Sheehy accused Native Americans of being "drunk at 8:00 A.M."

 

If Harris wins and they refuse to certify, what recourse is there?

I know the Supreme Court has basically given any president the ability to do whatever the fuck they want.  I'm assuming that Biden could step in.

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — Oklahoma’s top education official ordered public schools Thursday to incorporate the Bible into lessons for grades 5 through 12, the latest effort by conservatives to incorporate religion into classrooms.

 

The directive drew immediate condemnation from civil rights groups and supporters of the separation of church and state, with some calling it an abuse of power and a violation of the U.S. Constitution.

“The Bible is an indispensable historical and cultural touchstone,” Walters said in a statement. “Without basic knowledge of it, Oklahoma students are unable to properly contextualize the foundation of our nation which is why Oklahoma educational standards provide for its instruction.”

 

Oklahoma law already explicitly allows Bibles in the classroom and lets teachers use them in instruction, said Phil Bacharach, a spokesman for state Attorney General Gentner Drummond.

 

But it’s not clear if Walters has the authority to mandate that schools teach it. State law says individual school districts have the exclusive authority to decide on instruction, curriculum, reading lists, instructional materials and textbooks.

The head of the Oklahoma chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations criticized the directive as a clear violation of the Constitution’s Establishment Clause, which prohibits the government from “establishing” a religion.

“We adamantly oppose any requirements that religion be forcefully taught or required as a part of lesson plans in public schools, in Oklahoma, or anywhere else in the country,” Adam Soltani said in a statement.

 

“Public schools are not Sunday schools,” said Rachel Laser, president and CEO of Americans United for Separation of Church and State, in a statement. “This is textbook Christian Nationalism: Walters is abusing the power of his public office to impose his religious beliefs on everyone else’s children. Not on our watch.”
