    Cincinnati Bengals

Don’t look now, but following Sunday’s 17-13 victory over the Seahawks, the Bengals have won three of their past four and Joe Burrow is starting to do stuff like this:

Burrow, who’s been trying to shake a nagging calf injury since early in training camp, got up over 18 mph on that scramble, according to Next Gen Stats’s tracking data. That’s a sign that his calf is getting healthier, and thanks to another valiant effort by Lou Anarumo’s defense, Cincinnati is still within a game of first place in the AFC North. It’s starting to feel like the Bengals are back.

If you want to hold on to that optimism, just skip ahead to the next team right now. Oh, and don’t look at Sunday’s box score, this week’s film, or really any season-long stats—whether they’re counting stats or rate stats. While it ultimately ended in a W, the Seahawks game may have been the most concerning performance yet for the Bengals offense. The offense averaged minus-0.05 expected points added per play. Burrow averaged 4.4 yards per dropback—despite looking at his best physically for the first time this season—and the run game managed just 46 yards on 15 carries. After two early touchdown drives, the Bengals couldn’t do much of anything.

While I’m usually quick to blame Zac Taylor whenever this highly-powered offense stalls out, Sunday’s ugly performance falls more on Burrow. While he made more plays with his legs, he didn’t throw the ball well. There were several misplaced passes leading to incompletions, he didn’t let plays develop nearly enough—too eager to check the ball down—and he kept Seattle in the game with a poorly thrown interception.

    pass_chart_BUR679731_2023_REG_6_16974020

Fortunately for Cincinnati, Anarumo pitched a near-perfect game against a red-hot Geno Smith. The Seahawks quarterback completed 66 percent of his passes, but his expected completion percentage—which is based on pressure, depth of throw, and receiver separation—was just 58.1 percent, per Next Gen Stats. The game was decided by the throws Smith couldn’t get off. Anarumo tossed some nice changeups at Geno and got him to hold the ball long enough for the pass rush to get home. In Geno’s defense, he did not have a lot of options downfield:

Anarumo’s defense is coming up big in high-leverage situations, and Burrow is getting healthier. But the vibes are still off, and with a tough schedule ahead, Cincinnati could rapidly fall behind the top teams in the conference.

Burrow was 2-7 with an INT on passes longer than 10 yards, that's fugly....hopefully that was his last stinker of a game

that and they pass to fucking much ,  and  want to run out of the shotgun.  and their running plays are predictable.  pretty much teams run blitz fill the holes and if its a pass they know right where Burrow is going to be standing.

That was definitely the case in the first 4 weeks of the season, now that he's more mobile he can get to different spots and extend plays in passing situations and we are 2-0 because he can move around much better than the first month of the season.

Hopefully, the offense figures out how to run the ball effectively and they aren't dead last in running the ball by week 10.

Not trading tee unless you got crazy value. Two ones, a two or some ridiculous trade.  The big three are chase, burrow and tee. I wish they would  pay him. If they still had cmc it be hard to turn down but still would. Not sure

There's no way I'm paying Tee Higgins top 10 WR money, which is between 20-30 million. Higgins could get around 20 million on the open market but the Bengals would be foolish to do that.

WR salaries are getting crazy high and it will be impossible to keep two talented guys after their rookie deals are up if they both want top dollar, which is why the Bengals drafted two WRs in the draft this year as Higgins and Boyd are both FA next offseason.

  4. Metcalf is going full-on stupid, he's still butt hurt about the loss and being called out by his coach for losing his head and getting a stupid penalty.

    https://www.nbcsports.com/nfl/profootballtalk/rumor-mill/news/dk-metcalf-vows-not-to-change-the-way-he-plays

    Quote

"“It’s just a board to me, I’m not going to change the way I play,” Metcalf told reporters. “If you look at the penalties, there’s a taunting, unnecessary roughness, facemask, holding, and I think it was one more in there. I’m doing pretty good if I look at it and judge myself knowing how I play and just try to be consistent and have clean hands or whatever the case maybe, but I’m not going to change who I am as a player or a person.

He was asked whether he gets caught up in the moment and loses control.

“Have you had a bad day at work sometimes?” Metcalf said. “All right, that’s all I nail it down to, nobody’s perfect. I’m my own person like I just said I’m a competitive person, I’m not going to shy away because he put a penalty board on the screen. I’m just going to continue to be me.”

Metcalf wouldn’t even concede that his behavior is harming the team’s interests.

“I don’t feel like I was a problem or I need to make progress in a certain area,” he said. “Football is a violent sport and it’s my one opportunity to be violent on game days, I’m just going to continue to do that.”

What a clown, he can't take constructive criticism or feedback despite evidence that his actions are hurting his team. It's a thin margin between success and failure in the NFL and if you have a guy knowingly getting stupid penalties so he can feel better about himself then....wow...don't know what to say about that.

  5. Terrace Marshall played with Burrow and Chase at LSU and has been buried on the depth chart in Carolina. He's seeking a trade and could be a Tee Higgins replacement after this season is completed and would be under contract for 1.1 million, which is much less than what Higgins is looking for.

    https://www.nbcsports.com/nfl/profootballtalk/rumor-mill/news/report-terrace-marshall-gets-panthers-permission-to-seek-a-trade

I would trade Jackson Carman or a late-round pick for Marshall as he has talent and has been productive when given the opportunity. At LSU he teamed up with Burrow, Chase, and Jefferson to form one of the best passing attacks in CFB history. He's 6'2 1/2" and runs a 4.40/40, knows how to play with Burrow and Chase, and could put up similar production to Higgins for a fraction of the cost it would take to keep Higgins around long-term.

    Gym Jordan lost votes.

He won't be speaker, you can't lose votes and expect that it's going to go your way.

    Good on the moderates.

Also it's pretty on brand for the MAGA wing to pull shit like this....

Jim Jordan’s allies tried strong-arming his GOP critics. It backfired. - POLITICO

“Jim’s been nice, one-on-one, but his broader team has been playing hardball,” Rep. Don Bacon (R-Neb.) told POLITICO about Jordan’s network of supporters, adding that he’s been getting calls from party chairs back in Nebraska. He added that his wife even received multiple anonymous emails and texts saying: “your husband better support Jim Jordan.”

Gym should be in prison for enabling a sexual predator not one of the most powerful politicians in this country, it's amazing to me that a party that supposedly stands for protecting the children, see pizzagate, turn a blind eye and ignore facts when it comes to their own with guys like Matt Gaetz and Jim Jordan. I guess it's all about morals when it comes to someone else, but when it's happening in your own backyard not so much.

In theory, the Republican party is great, they stand for family values, financial responsibility, free markets, etc...but in actuality, they are a bunch of hypocrites that don't come close to anything that they say they are about..which is why Trump has been able to high jack the party and they lost an election to Joe Biden, a complete tool.

Once again the GOP fails to elect a speaker.

Very disappointed they can't get this done...

Bidens trip to the middle east was a

    clusterfuck as well.

    He's great at reading teleprompters

regarding Israel but until he gets his spineless ass to denounce Iran as the culprit, the terrorists will continue to terrorize anyone in their way to destroy Western civilization.

He fears Iran and they know it.

The US should fear Noone ...

How do you know it was Iran that was behind the Hamas attack?  And if they were the culprit wouldn't they do more to help the Palestinians that are getting slaughtered by the thousands every day?

So you want Biden to blame Iran without any proof or evidence because what....not to appear to be weak? That's very stupid.

Also, who said anything about fearing anyone, sounds like you are projecting. You remind me of my childhood friend who is a conservative Republican. He has this irrational fear that Muslim countries are going to kill Americans en mass and he's using this as justification to blindly support anything that Israel does, including bombing hospitals, escape routes, and killing innocent children. His fears are not based on any real evidence, America has never been close to being invaded or taken over by anyone in the last 200 years and definitely not by any Muslim country halfway across the world without the means to do so...it's a silly irrational fear that gets feed by propaganda and hate.

As for the Republicans, all I can do is laugh, it's a circus and the biggest clown is running the show...

Drake Maye is the best QB in this class and it’s not particularly close, IMO.

I wouldn't go that far, Maye is a good prospect but there are a few good prospects in the draft this year. Williams, Penix, Daniels, Nix, Ewers, Hartman, and McCarthy are all potential first round QB's....I wouldn't want to be a QB that is a FA this offseason.

This is against NFL rules and apparently he doesn’t realize that rookie contracts are slotted. 😂

This is a BS story that is not based on any facts, it was based on a Twitter rumor from July that is now resurfacing after Caleb had a bad game.

Sounds like Samuel is day to day this week I'd be surprised if he is out next week. CmC not sure as he sonds like an oblique or rib, which I have no idea of the recovery time on that.

Purdy looks beatable if you have a top pass rush. That is the question for me.

It's looking like CMC will play this week, but they play on MNF and they play us on Sunday so we are catching them on a short week so we will be catching them at the right time.

There was a scuffle before last night's game between Dallas and the Chargers, too.

    What is up with that?

The Cowboys were upset because they believed that the Chargers were blocking their entrance onto the field, which makes sense...why would the Chargers choose to warm up in the direct path of where the Cowboys enter the field?

I'm curious about this actually.  I'm wondering if Carman is inactive on game days not necessarily because he isn't the first LT off the bench, but rather that Ford is much more versatile and can backup guard or tackle, so he gets to be active on game days instead?  If Orlando Brown's injury persists (hope not), I would guess Carman may actually take his place in the interim instead of Ford...just a guess since Carman did look "not too bad" at LT last year.  I didn't really watch Ford closely last game after OBJ went down, but if he did play well as you said, I could be all wrong.

The fact that the broadcast didn't even realize he was in the game until his second series and he didn't stand out speaks to the fact that he was playing well and there wasn't a huge dropoff in the level of play when he came into the game.

  13. 30 minutes ago, New Jersey Bengal said:

Wonder was it wasn't Carmen as he played decent at LT  in the playoffs last year

He's been inactive most games this year, he doesn't seem to be in the future plans of this organization. Wouldn't surprise me if he was traded ala Billy Price or released if a FA is brought in.

Ford played well at LT so I don't know where Carman is on the pecking order but he's clearly not the first LT off the bench.

  14. 16 hours ago, texbengal said:

Carman was terrible at G. That's really Ford's position as well... he played some T in Buffalo (he was drafted as a T, IIRC) - but he was pretty terrible. I think it may be a situation where Carman is the better athlete, but Ford is more focused/reliable.

But after the playoffs last year, where I thought Carman played well, not sure why he hasn't been able to sustain that, or improve upon it... and at least be the first backup tackle. Ugh - second round pick... I'd seriously consider jettisoning him after this year, unless something changes.

Was he worse than Volson? In 2021 when Carman got the most snaps of his career he had a PFF grade of 56.3, currently Volson has a PFF grade of 48.2 and last season he had a PFF grade of 51.6. I know you have to give some players an opportunity to develop into the position but Volson is holding this offense back and it seems like he's regressing. His pass blocking hasn't improved, the sack he gave up last week when he got tossed like a balled-up piece of paper is evidence of that, and the run blocking is awful as the Bengals are ranked dead last in rushing. In short-yardage situations he gets blown up and gets no movement on the ball...there is a huge lack of consistency from Volson that includes some good plays and some awful plays...his floor is too low and the ceiling isn't very high.

Thanks for sharing - I love this shit. Don't mean to take away from the memory of Rudolph Isley, but I'm a guitar player, so...

Absolutely, RIP to Rudolph Isley, that group is legendary and a huge source of pride for many people who grew up in Zone 15. They are one of the best R&B groups ever, they had #1 songs in 5 decades, that is incredible and will probably never be topped.
