I looked up an old post. Go, you got your camera from this place?

http://www.amphotoworld.com/default.asp

Service any good there? I'm looking at the canon powershot A610, and they have a hell of a cheap price there. Only $236. Anyone know if that camera is any good?

Any personal experience with it? All of the reviews I read are pretty good. I just need something like this that can go from fully automatic to manual. I'm an experienced photographer on a pre-digital era camera, so I don't like cameras doing all of the work for me. However, my wife is not so experienced. But I can't afford those nice $1000 cameras. So, I was thinking of getting something like this one.

Ya, be aware of to good to be true prices.. always a catch. I read an article not to long ago (will try to dig it up) about someone doing research on all these online camera sellers and most were like GB described.. Basically any camera shop in NY or even IL, be careful. They try to sell you on accessories/warranties/etc.. if you dont buy, then they dont care. Places were open for business one month, gone the next. Selling refurbs, returns, open boxes.. as new in the box cameras.

My g/f is looking into buying a cam also.. she wants a small compact camera so it can fit nicely in her purse. So if there is a "kodak" moment, we'll have a camera handy.. rather than wishing we brought the cam but didnt because it's so damn big.

We've narrowed it down to one of these... (leaning towards the casio)

Dont think you can go wrong with canon though, always hear good things about them.. seems to be a popular camera;

Ok, gobengals. Thanks so much for the warning. The price was too unbelievable. I have bought from B&H. I used to buy film, paper and all my other photo supplies there. I actually can stop by their store one day and pick up the camera if I choose. Save delivery fees. Since I can't save the money, I may drop down to the A520. I'll have to wait and see how all the money gets allocated.

the main thing i always look at is OPTICAL zoom, the digital zoom is essentially photoshop and just blows the image up. optical is the only real zoom, that one only had 4x, but depending what your taking photos of that might be plenty if they are mostly close up... if you are doing any landscape or distance shots, i would go to 10-12x optical... kodak and canon seem to be the best for auto/manual options.. ive got a kodak DX7590, its got all the manual settings in the worl as well as an auto setting, they just launched a new version of my camera made it a bit smaller and added 2x optical for 12x total...

The Kodak P850 and P880 seem to be the ones, the 880 runs $600 from kodak so probably $500 online or ebay..its only 5.8x optical but its 8MP.... but the 850 was the first one i found.. its a 5.1 MP and a 12x optical zoom, http://kodak.com/eknec/PageQuerier.jhtml;j...&_requestid=592

there is also the Z7590, which was the re-launch of my exact camera with new firmware on it... kodak is also great about firmware upgrades, they email you if they update the firmware on your camera, you can download it to a SD card pop it in camera and it updates for you.

P850 - $449 list price, buydig.com has it for $357, my parents just got a camera from buydig, showed up in 2 days...standard shipping..

the Z7590 you can get for about $250

beachcamera is also a great store

i would shop:

buydig.com
beachcamera.com
bhphotovideo.com

or any other large name outlet, bestbuy,etc...

Ahh, so the Kodaks have full manual options also? I was reading that the Canons do, so I've been looking at those. Maybe I'll take a look at some of the Kodaks also now. I don't know how much I'll be needing a higher zoom, but can't you get telephoto lenses for the cameras?

yes, you can get a lens, a REAL good lens, equal to the built in zoom will run you $100-200, ebay-$100... so its typically worth it to just get it in the camera you want, some of the compact cameras cant use a zoom lens, but most can, you also would need a lens adapter for the zoom lens which is cheap but another cost.. plus a case for the lens if your camera case doesnt have one, etc...

it looks like the difference between the kodak z7590 and the P850 is two sweet things..(now i want a new one)

1. image stabalization - so if your shaky the photo wont be. great for cold football games damnit!
2. RAW file types, the 7590 converts the images to jpeg and essentially compresses them, the P850 leaves them as RAW tiff files, so they are in thier original form, color, etc.. much larger files, but worth it..
