Ryan Wagner returned to camp yesterday after missing two days with the flu.
"I'm never sick," he said. "So when I get sick, I'm a big wuss. I had a 103 fever (Friday). I thought I was going to die." Feb. 26 - 2:37 pm et

Taking a suggestion from former Red Tom Browning, Eric Milton has decided to start pitching from the first base side of the rubber.
Anything to help him handle right-handed hitters. "I tried it out while throwing batting practice Friday," said Milton. "It felt good. I've always had good control, so it didn't throw me off. Billy Connors moved me to the third base side when I pitched with the Yankees." 35 of the 40 homers Milton have up last year were to right-handed hitters. He hopes to have more luck working inside versus righties because of the change. Feb. 26 - 2:36 pm et

The Reds are now saying that prospect William Bergolla, who was diagnosed with a hernia on Thursday, has only a high groin strain and is day-to-day.
Quite a change. A hernia might have kept him out for two months. Feb. 25 - 5:57 pm et

Reds agreed to terms with 3B Edwin Encarnacion and RHP Mike Burns on one-year contracts.
Encarnacion is set to go into the season as a starter, but he may not be a full-time player, as the Reds will seek ways to keep Rich Aurilia and Tony Womack involved. It'll probably be a temporary arrangement. By the time the Reds fall 15 games back in June, it should be obvious that wasting at-bats on Womack isn't a good idea. Feb. 25 - 3:15 am et

Kent Mercker, who reported stiffness and soreness in the upper back muscles below his shoulder while warming up Thursday, long-tossed on Friday and will be re-examined by trainers tomorrow.
Mercker may once again get some save chances this year, though he's probably not a candidate to close on a regular basis. Right-handers hit him hard last season, so he's still better off as a specialist. Feb. 24 - 4:31 pm et

Luke Hudson, who had been sidelined by lower back spasms, threw live batting practice session today.
Since he failed as a starter last year, Hudson is currently competing for a spot in Cincinnati's bullpen. Feb. 24 - 4:30 pm et

Paul Wilson - Starting Pitcher

Manager Jerry Narron said yesterday that if Paul Wilson (shoulder) is healthy, he'll be a member of the Reds rotation.
Wilson would join Aaron Harang, Brandon Claussen, Eric Milton and Dave Williams, although general manager Wayne Krivsky sounds willing to upgrade if he can. Mar. 1 - 8:38 am et

Dave Williams - Starting Pitcher

Dave Williams surrendered five runs -- two earned -- in one inning of work today as the Reds lost to the Kia Tigers of Korea 12-4.
Imagine what they could do to the Marlins. Kia started right-hander Seth Greisinger, who allowed two hits in three scoreless innings. The other semi-familiar name in the lineup was former Giants minor leaguer Mike Cervanek. Prospect Travis Chick joined Williams in getting lit up, giving up four runs in the fifth inning. Matt Belisle, Todd Coffey and Mike Burns managed to turn in scoreless innings for the Reds. Feb. 28 - 6:54 pm et

Ranier Olmedo - Second Baseman

Reds agreed to terms with INF Ray Olmedo, INF William Bergolla and RHP Travis Chick on one-year contracts.
Even though the Reds have praised him for years and he's coming off a big winter ball campaign, Olmedo has been lost in the shuffle. Because Rich Aurilia was retained and Tony Womack was brought in, Olmedo and Bergolla figure to form the double-play combination at Triple-A Louisville. Feb. 28 - 6:16 pm et

Ryan Freel - Outfielder

Ryan Freel, who swiped 36 bases despite two trips to the DL last year, has set a target of 60 steals this season.
He could get there if he somehow plays in 150 games, but at this point, the Reds aren't even talking about him as the leading candidate for the second base job. He'll get quite a bit of playing time even if he's behind Rich Aurilia on the depth chart initially, but he could be a disappointment in fantasy leagues. Feb. 28 - 2:30 pm et
