reason i like gold star is that it's a thicker chili, skylines is much thinner and its very watery. plus i gots to support my arab brothers at gold star :) just had me some and it was the bomb. man i moved to N.C back in 2000 for a couple of years, and boy did i miss that stuff. when i used to come back and visit here that was the first thing that i would do, and get white castles too.

More than 50 years ago in the small village of Kastoria, Greece, young Nicholas Lambrinides watched, fascinated, as his mother and grandmother prepared authentic Greek dishes from recipes passed down for generations. Nicholas vowed to one day come to America and open a restaurant. There, he would continue the Lambrinides family tradition of serving food made from the highest quality ingredients, according to a secret recipe, that the whole family could enjoy.

Nicholas did come to America. And in 1949 he opened his first restaurant in Cincinnati, Ohio. From the kitchen of his small family-operated establishment, Nicholas saw a breathtaking view of the skyline of Cincinnati. And so Skyline Chili got its name…and its start.

Over the years, Nicholas’ sons–Lambert, Christie, William, James and John–personally mixed the secret spices so that the chili would always taste as it did in their father’s first restaurant. Today, all Skyline Chili is still made according to Nicholas’ secret recipe, which is kept in a safe and known only to a few. Our mission is to make certain that the quality of Skyline Chili, and the same secret blend of spices, remains true to his vision and achievements.

From a small kitchen thousands of miles away in Greece to a little restaurant nestled on a Cincinnati hillside, the dream of one man has become a truly unique tradition that lives on today. We also are committed to maintaining the Lambrinides family tradition of outstanding hospitality and friendly service.
In 1965, the four Daoud brothers were embarking on a fast food journey that would soon embody the Great American Dream of owning a successful business. Working odd jobs and attending college, the brothers scraped together $1,200 and combined it with cash advances on vending machines to buy their first restaurant, Hamburger Heaven in Mt. Washington. Included with the restaurant was a recipe for Cincinnati-style chili.

With much tinkering and reformulating of the recipe, the brothers settled on what has become one of Cincinnati's classic tastes. To this day, the spice blend is a closely guarded secret that remains within the family. The brothers renamed the restaurant Gold Star Chili and opened two additional restaurants within a year responding to the chili's popularity. With this, Gold Star Chili established the first free-standing chili restaurant in Cincinnati. From the beginning, the Daoud brothers worked hard to put Cincinnati on the map with Gold Star Chili. They created a product to exacting specifications and perfected its preparation.

By the time the Cincinnati Reds were world champions in 1976, there were 21 Gold Star Chili locations. The year the Bengals went to their first Super Bowl there were 48, and in 1989, Gold Star opened its 100th location. In 1995, Gold Star Chili celebrated its 30th anniversary and in 1999 Gold Star Chili, Inc was named Small Business of the Year by the Greater Cincinnati Chamber of Commerce. Also in 1999, Cincinnati Magazine crowned Gold Star Chili the winner in an independent blind taste test conducted by five star chefs among Cincinnati style chili chains.

Today Gold Star Chili continues to be a favorite location to enjoy the Cincinnati chili tradition and can be found in Cincinnati, Dayton, Middletown, Hamilton, Northern Kentucky, Lexington, and Lawrenceburg, Indiana. Gold Star also operates concessions at Paul Brown Stadium, Children's Hospital, and the Greater Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport. It is the patronage of our customers and the hard work of our franchisees and associates that have helped make Gold Star Chili successful. The Daoud families thank you.

Lucky for me - I "by luck without even knowing" moved to a place in South Florida that literally has a Skyline within 5 minutes of me .....

The first time I saw it driving down the street I almost crashed .... as I weaved across lanes to enter the promised land

(there are around 6 of them down here in FL) one of the only states outside of Ohio that has them
