This is that moron Ben Thatcher's tackle / elbow versus Portsmouth's Pedro Mendes

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DTRaS7ffyWg

Mendes had to be hispitalised. This is the second time Thatcher has done something like this. I hope they fucking throw the book at him. The police might charge him as well! Booyah!
It sucks donkey dick about Ashton. Typical West Ham luck. Some key injuries for the first game, and a midfield that is looking a bit thin now that Etherington is out for a month and Newton gone for the season. Another midfielder needs to be brought in for cover.

Season kicks off on Saturday!
Rumour has it that the hammers are looking at Deportivo La Caruna midfielder Duscher, and are also interested in Malbronk from Fulham.

Will not believe it till they are on paper. Or somehow miraculously don't get lost on the way to the stadium and turn up at Stamford Bridge. Plus, as a Bengals fan, I know all about dissapointment with potential signings.

Pair on way to Upton Park after rejecting number of elite clubs

In one of the most surprising transfer deals ever sealed in English football, West Ham have signed coveted Argentina stars Carlos Tevez and Javier Mascherano - beating off competition from Manchester United, Arsenal, Bayern Munich and AC Milan. And Portsmouth.

The pair will join the Hammers from Brazilian club Corinthians on a season-long loan but it could become permanent if all parties are happy, though whether West Ham could afford them is unclear, since both carry price tags in excess of £15m.

Article continues
Tevez broke the news of the transfer on his official website. "Carlitos Tevez - along with his former Corinthians team-mate, Javier Mascherano, has signed - a contract to play with West Ham United of England," read the statement.

The move is nothing short of sensational: never before have two world-class players yet to reach their prime - both are only 22 - rejected a host of elite clubs in order to join a middling one. However, while it true that West Ham are on the up with Alan Pardew at the helm and exciting talents such as Anton Ferdinand, Yossi Benayoun and Nigel Reo-Coker .

It is unquestionably a major coup for Pardew and gives last season's FA Cup runners-up one of the most impressive-looking squads in the Premiership.

With the addition of Tevez, a prolific striker who's capable of being both subtle and barnstorming, Upton Park is now home to one of the most fearsome strikeforces in England. The Argentinian will surely be an automatic first choice, leaving Pardew the luxury of choosing between between Dean Ashton - when he returns to fitness - Bobby Zamora, Marlon Harewood, Carlton Cole and Teddy Sheringham.

Their midfield will also be formidable, with Mascherano, who Sir Alex Ferguson reportedly rated as the world's most worthy recipient of the "new Roy Keane" tag, likely to slot in alongside Reo-Coker, Benayoun and Matthew Etherington.

All of a sudden West Ham look an excellent bet to win this season's Uefa Cup - and have been transformed into genuine contenders for a Champions League spot.
Used to live in London when younger. Family supported Spurs, so to be a rebel I took after West Ham. Been close to 20 years now. In Toronto, Canada now.

I think earlier in the thread I posted a diatribe about the pain of being a West Ham fan.

English Bengal is a Hammers / Bengal fan as well. As is WhoDeyUK.

Nati Ice is considering it, after we signed Spector, the US defender.

Anyhoo, this is getting interesting. Rumours are abounding that Chelsea (Abramovich) is the real force behind the move of Tevez and Maschareno to West Ham.

The rights to both are owned by MSI. Media Sports Investments. A shadowy firm who own Corinthians in Brazil and are apparently backed by Russian money. With Abramovich as a major investor.

The thinking is that he did not want to see either of the two move to one of the big 3...e.g. Arsenal / Man Utd / Liverpool. Or to any team that could seriously challenge Chelski for the title.

So this way, Tevez and Moschareno come to Upton Park. Get acclimatised to English football for a season, even allow West Ham to challenge for a Top 6 spot. And then end of the season, or another year down the road, they make the move to Chelsea.

Even if it's true, and we are merely pawns in the whole thing, I will gladly take it. The benefits of having those two there and showing the young talent we have that we are serious about making the move up, is priceless.

:headbang: :headbang: :headbang:
If I hadn't been so slow, I shoulda posted this yesterday. I shot the news to my buddy back in the US who turned me on the West Ham within 10 minutes of the news, and needless to say, it made his day. I kinda forgot about the few of us who actually know about this thread... (and I'm more of a casual observer, especially compared to my passion for the Bengals adn Buckeyes)

So are these guys as good as advertised? It sure sounds like folks are pretty excited.

Here's an article on the signing.

Brad Friedel is a BEAST!

The US goalie has faced 5 penalties this season. And saved 4! Even the one that did go in, (in the game against Chelsea, by Lampard) he guessed right and it narrowly squirmed under his body.

Tevez made his West Ham debut yesterday. Coming on for the last 20 minutes. Did enough to show he was a force. I expect him to start on Saturday. Overall, West Ham played poorly and we were quite lucky to escape with a draw.

West Ham lost 1-0 in the first leg of their UEFA Cup tie against Palermo - should've been a draw. Tevez nearly scored a nice goal but the goalie pulled off a great save.

The Palermo goal was more West Ham being stupid than Palermo outplaying them. Two hammers players stopped playing when a Palermo one-two pass seemingly went out for a throw in. But the whistle didn't blow to stop play. However West Ham had, thinking the ball was out, and the Palermo player was allowed to cross from the edge of the area and their forward tapped it into the net. A painful lesson learnt - it will tough in Palermo in the next leg - they're a well organised outfit who know how to defend and play on the break (just like all the Italian teams).

ok, so the usmnt is apparently in talks with klinsmann and if we get either him or pekerman i will go crazy (word on the street since bruce got canned was that he would be taking over after a several month long break, i hope this is just the precursor to an actual announcement)

i also have been looking over players that could possibly be named to the next wc squad, and jesus... that defense will be top notch. i have the upmost confidence that we will be fielding a wc championship caliber squad within my lifetime... kinda makes me wish i was born a few decades later.

Proud parent here...we had a soccer tournament this past weekend and 2 of my kids were involved. My 12 year old son's team, as a group since April had never won a game, was able to get a win and a draw in group play to advance to the consolation game and won that for 3rd place in a combined U13/U14 division. They got blanked in their loss in group play but my son scored the goals in their 1-1 draw and their 1-0 win in group play and in their 4-0 win for third place he had an assist. My 7 year old daughter's team has 3 key players who really carry the team and they were able to finish group play with 2 wins and a draw and was able to get a rematch against the team they tied with in the championship (who they beat 3-2 during the regular season). After regulation and overtime it was tied 1-1 and we were able to win in the shootout and win the championship for U9 girls, the first time these girls have ever seen a shootout. We nickname my daughter "Twitchy" and if you've seen the movie "Hoodwinked", you might get the idea...she's fast and she has a nose for the goal. Out of 14 goals in group play that the team scored, she put in 8 of them and added a PK in the shootout...it was very exciting to say the least...except I hate shootouts, even worse than when the Bengals are in OT...anyways, I'm very proud of my kids and just wanted to let some of that out!

:D

West Ham finally put their shit run behind them.

Jonathon Spector got his firt start at right back, and had a GREAT game imo. Solid defending, good positional sense. And in the second half, showed some confidence going forward. His crosses need work. Especially as the West Ham system calls for overlapping full backs to cross. But based on his debut, thought he was great...if he plays like that all season and improves his crossing slightly, we got a a STEAL for 500k.

Adu to train with that other United... http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport2/hi/football/t...utd/6131062.stm

also, the MLS Cup is on ABC at like 3:00 or 3:30 Sunday, so depending on the outcome of the Bengals game I may have to switch over early, but if nothing else I'll be able to catch the end the match. Houston(San Jose) looks pretty damn impressive.

Also the announcement was made awhile back that this coming year will be the start of a 4 team MLS/Mexican football league matchup that should be pretty interesting if nothing else. Apparently they are playing for a $ prize so it should be pretty competitive. The only problem is that we wont be sending our best teams until the following year as we are still working out the details, so hopefully the possibly second rate MLS squads don't embarrass a growing American footy league.

West Ham have been bought by an Icelandic millionaire with the backing of an Icelandic billionaire! There was a bidding war, between a mysterious consortium fronted by a sketchy Iranian dude, and then this Iceland consortium came out of no where.

While no one is expecting Chelsea type riches, there should be some injection of cash into the club. Good times. Maybe we can stop being a feeder club that develops great young talent, but has to sell it anytime one of the rich clubs come knocking.

The guy looks like an alien though:

Here's another picture of the new chairman...

The sports pundits on TV are already calling him 'egghead' and making grandad jokes.

Who cares as long as this little baldy works some magic and takes West Ham forward and upward.

I've also heard that he's still trying to move West Ham to the olympic stadium after the 2012 games. That would be awesome.

Also, it looks likely the Tevez and Mascerano will be leaving the club in the January transfer window, now that the iranian guy has failed in his bid. From what I understand, if the two players do leave, West Ham will not get any profit from the sale, because the players themselves are under the control of the Iranian bloke.

By the way, good way to start of the new era, West Ham United 1 Sheffield United 0. Third home win on the spin. Keep it up!
