If Barry Bonds goes into the hall of fame, and Pete continues to be banned from baseball, I will never watch another pro baseball game in my life.

They should either both be banned, or both be allowed in baseball.

Baseball has had all sorts of problems during its existence. There is no question that Pete Rose belongs in the HOF as a player, it is a shame that he is tarnished because of what happened while he was a manager. I don't believe that Pete would have ever done enough as a manager to warrant selection in the HOF.

I understand and many times feel the same way about the betrayal issue. The same air of arrogance that made him the player that he was also destroyed him.

The records that he holds as outlined in this post make it seem just plain dumb that he is not in the HOF - what he did while a manager has nothing to do with it. He has many supporters, among them the newest in Boggs and Sandberg. The problem is the old school guys mainly. Bob Feller is his biggest critic. Pete made a critical error in not coming clean sooner and if he had sought help and modified his life, he would be in the HOF now. Having said that however, Bud Selig is an idiot as with most of the baseball commissioners over the last several years.

How many people remember the trade by the Reds and Oakland when the Reds wanted to send Dave Revering and cash to Oakland for Vida Blue? The commissioner nixed the deal saying that it was not in the best interest of baseball. Oakland was shedding payroll for cash and Bowie Kuhn nixed it. Now, look at the Randy Johnson deal and any number of other deals, is that deal in the best interest of baseball? Bottom line - MLB is corrupt, self-serving and hypocritical. The audacity of MLB is amazing.

Pete could have helped himself more in this ordeal though, but he belongs in the HOF, or they should close the doors. It could be argued that Pete actually has made a healthy living as a result of this controversy and may be talked about more now than when he played.

I think baseball needs contraction, they need to raise the mound again (a little more than it is now pre-1969), they need to eliminate the body armor hitters wear and call strikes as it states in the rule book. No one can tell me that Glavine, Maddox etc did not get many calls outside the zone in their heyday and that the strike zone is not actually from the belt to the knees. The strike zone called by umps is not the same as in the book.

Yes, baseball has many problems beyond PR - they rarely have the capacity to do the right thing unless pushed. Look at the recent steroid issue, they would not have changed a thing unless forced. They in fact have turned a blind eye to it. Master Card promotions included Pete, why did Selig do that? He and baseball does things if it serves their interest and only then do they do things that they ordinarily might not.

I'm excited about the Reds this year and will enjoy the ride while it lasts, but how long will it be before we have to retool again due to cost constraints? Won't matter, Boston, NYY or the like will swoop in and take players drafted by the Reds, developed and skills honed by the Reds. Sick cycle.

Look at the number of Short Stops in the HOF, there is not question that Concepcion should be in there. Pee Wee Reese, Rizzutto, etc, why them and no Concepcion? The Veterans Committee had to put them, the writers didn't. Short Stop for many years was not about have offensive numbers, it was much more than that. Ozzie Smith first ballot and Concpcion can't get more than 12% of the vote - dumb. Why only one, two or three per year, their criteria needs retooling. I think of Lawrence Taylor in the football HOF, he should be. His life outside of football had nothing to do with what he did on the field - why doesn't baseball adopt that a little? They should. How about Nuxhall, there is no one who deserves it more (HOF). I hope that he gets in before he dies, afterwards, who cares other than us , his family and friends. I want it to be while he is alive and can enjoy it. Man, I'll miss Joe, I grew up with him - he is the Cincinnati Reds above everyone else, including Marty.

GREAT post bclion. I agree, Pete, Joe and Dave belong in the HOF. I would like to be excited about this season, but I'm not. I don't think they did enough to truely compete this year, and I am still pi$$ed of at how they handled Barry Larkin. I usually attend a game or 2 while I am in Cincinnati in the summer. If I make the trip this year, I likely won't go to any games. I'm not giving Lindner any of my money in protest (but I might go see them when they play the Marlins down here in south Florida.

Baseball needs to change. In the real world, I am opposed to socialism, but baseball needs a little of it. Salary cap and revenue sharing are essential if MLB wants to stay viable.

I agree, Baseball needs a true salary cap and not this luxary tax garbage that the ones it effects dont care because they can afford it anyway. The problem is that the players union wolnt have it and the owners know that a strike would hurt them because of the fans they lost in the last one and they are scared to death of that. So I dont think well see a cap any time soon unfortunatly.

What else do you want from Lindner? Have you even been keeping track of the Reds offseason? I think we can compete with the Cardinals now.

Yes, I have been keeping up. They picked up a couple relievers, Joe Randa, a 3rd baseman, and Eric Milton, a second tier FA starting pitcher. He is not a true #1. Unless one of the kids has a break out year, we are NOT good enough to compete with the Cardinals. Even if we stay healthy.

I want Lindner to open his huge bank account (he has more money than Steinbrenner) and run the team like he is a baseball fan and not a business man and compete for Randy Johnson or Carlos Beltran.

I want the team to handle Barry Larkin with a little more class.

He would lose money if he ran the team like Steinbrenner.

Eric Milton is a true #1, with Paul Wilson and Harang behind him. Doesn't sound too bad to me.

What else are they supposed to do with Larkin?

[post="34800"]<{POST_SNAPBACK}>[/post]
Milton has never won more than 15 games, his best strike out total is 163, for his career, he gives up 1.45 HR/9IP and his best full season ERA is 4.32. I'm sorry, but in my mind, that is not a true #1. It is a GOOD #2 (except the ERA). At least he is relatively young and left handed.

I'm not asking him to run the team like Steinbrenner, just compete for top a tier free agent. Besides at his age, and with the money he makes from his other businesses, he can afford to spend some money on the Reds. Heck, if he loses money, he can take a tax write off. And if he puts money into the team to produce a winner, fans will turn out.

As for Larkin, keep him the 1 more year he wanted, and give him the day in his honor while he is still on the team. I think he could have been a good 3rd baseman for a season.
