Just think, Carson barely had to throw the ball, and we were missing TJ and C. Perry. Carson did look a little rusty, but will only get better as the season goes on.

On to Cleveland, who just got beat by the Saints!!!!!!!!!! 18 total yards in the first half for the Browns. 30-3 Bengals.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Opening Day is never pretty, but the Bengals defense embraced Sunday’s opener here Sunday with seven sacks and safety Madieu Williams’s interception in grinding toward a 23-10 victory over the Chiefs.

Carson Palmer threw for just 127 yards and none of Chad Johnson’s five catches came in the second half, but running back Rudi Johnson slogged for 97 yards on 28 carries that included a 22-yard touchdown run. Shayne Graham finished the scoring with 1:09 left on a 36-yard field goal.

The Chiefs didn’t score a touchdown until 3:52 left in the game when backup quarterback Damon Huard fired up a nine-yard lob to tight end Tony Gonzalez over linebacker Brian Simmons and safety Dexter Jackson, two of their more stalwart defenders during the day.

The rebuilt Bengals defensive line supplied the seven sacks, with three coming from Missouri native Justin Smith, two from end Robert Geathers and another each by end Bryan Robinson and tackle John Thornton.

In order to run the clock, the Bengals hammered Rudi 11 times for 24 yards in the fourth quarter. In a much uglier twist to what happened to the Bengals at the end of last season, the Chiefs watched quarterback Trent Green leave the Arrowhead Stadium field strapped to a board with 4:40 left in the third quarter and the Bengals leading, 17-3.

Former Bengal Damon Huard came in for Green and a few snaps later defensive end Bryan Robinson came up with the Bengals’ fourth sack of the game and forced a fumble that pushed back the Chiefs’ Lawrence Tynes to a 51-yard field goal that was short.

The Bengals’ Shayne Graham then countered with a 42-yard field goal that made it 20-3 with 11:35 left in the game, rescuing an offense that got 83 yards from running back Rudi Johnson on his first 21 carries and not much else.

With Green scrambling out of the pocket, Bengals defensive end Robert Geathers lowered his shoulder as Green went into his slide near the Kansas City sideline. Green’s head snapped and bounced off the grass, and he lay motionless for about 15 minutes before he went off the stretcher with the only report that he suffered a blow to the head and was doubtful to return. A radio report said he had feeling in his extremities.

The Cincinnati defense came up large in building the lead. Through the first three quarters they not only had the four sacks, but also an interception from safety Madieu Williams and a combined 10 tackles from linebackers Brian Simmons and Landon Johnson and the Chiefs just 165 yards.

Nothing like the No Huddle offense to settle the Opening Day nerves.

With a shaky offense and defense both contributing to a 3-3 tie early in the second quarter, Carson Palmer and the offense quicked out of the funk with an 11-play, 88-yard drive that ended with running back Rudi Johnson’s 22-yard touchdown run and two sacks later running back Kenny Watson’s eight-yard touchdown run on a sweep steadied the Bengals with a 17-3 halftime lead.

Johnson silenced the massive Arrowhead Stadium crowd with his touchdown bolt, his second third-and-one run of the drive, the only plays that didn’t come out of the No Huddle. Palmer hit all of his five passes in the series for 51 yards, content to hit wide receiver Chad Johnson intermediate for 15 yards in front of cornerback Ty Law and then short off what appeared to be a check at the line of scrimmage. Johnson made Law miss for nine yards after the catch.

Then the right side of the line, with tackle Willie Anderson, guard Bobbie Williams, and wide receiver Kelley Washington detonated the Chiefs for Johnson’s TD run on his way to 66 yards rushing in the first half on 12 carries and gave the Bengals a 10-3 lead with 5:15 left in the first half.

It was a nice comeback for Anderson, whose rare penalties on the first two drives help hold his team to just 27 yards in the first quarter. Working against first-round pick Tamba Hali, Anderson, the Pro Bowler, got called for a hold on the first drive and then was called for a false start on the second drive.

The Bengals had only a once-a-year event to thank for a 3-3 tie midway through the first half when returner Dante Hall’s fumbled punt turned into Shayne Graham’s 37-yard field goal with just seven seconds gone in the second quarter.

Linebacker Landon Johnson recovered Hall’s fumble at the Kansas City 14, but the offense, which scored an NFL-best 153 points off turnovers last season and 11th in red-zone touchdowns, uncharacteristically couldn’t punch it in.

The Bengals promptly lost five yards on a pass to wide receiver Chris Henry, and Palmer and Chad Johnson failed to hook up for the second time in the game when Johnson appeared to break free on a slant in the end zone but the timing was off when the pass came up short.

Their previous drive ended on a play when Johnson had cornerback Lenny Walls one-on-one, but Palmer threw it long down the field as Johnson cut the route short to the sidelines.

But by the time they regrouped, Palmer had jacked his passer rating to 90.2 at halftime on 10 of 13 passing for 75 yards, and Chad had five catches for 48 yards.

The defense also regrouped, and on the series following the touchdown got consecutive sacks from tackle John Thornton and Justin Smith and a brutal punt set them up at the Chiefs 37. They went back to the No Huddle and the running game, getting a 16-yard cut back run from Rudi and two textbook plays by third down back Kenny Watson. One was an eight-yard catch before he ran behind pulling left tackle Levi Jones for the touchdown with 1:05 left in the half for the 17-3 lead.

After trying to find its way early, the defense came up big in the second quarter with three sacks (the other by end Robert Geathers) and raised its back up on Chiefs running back Larry Johnson. After Johnson rushed for 32 yards on seven runs, he had just six yards on two carries in the second quarter.

The defense did begin its regular season the way it began its last one, giving up big plays to Larry Johnson and others. He gashed the right side for a 16-yard gain, and quarterback Trent Green converted double digits down the middle to tight end Tony Gonzalez (15 yards) and Eddie Kennison (14 on third-and-five) before new Kansas City coach Herman Edwards stopped his own offense by calling a running play to Johnson on third-and-five from the Bengals 11.

After linebacker Brian Simmons came up to make the stop for no gain, Lawrence Tynes kicked a 29-yard field goal for the 3-0 lead with 3:05 left ion the first quarter.[/quote]
