Chargers' second-year linebacker Shawne Merriman has dropped his appeal and will serve a four-game suspension for testing positive for a banned substance, according to a San Diego Union-Tribune report.

Merriman, according to the newspaper, was able to work out a deal with the NFL allowing him to appear at team headquarters on Wednesday to address his teammates before he is banned from team facilities for the balance of his suspension.
The New York Times first reported (on Monday) that Merriman would drop the suspension and wanted an opportunity to meet with his teammates.

Suspended NFL players are banned from team facilities.

Had Merriman not dropped the appeal by noon Tuesday, he would have been required to proceed with a hearing tha had been scheduled for Nov. 7.

Merriman said the positive drug test stems from a tainted supplement, and not many people thought he would avoid the suspension.

Merriman will be eligible return against the Buffalo Bills on Dec. 3.

On Monday, Merriman, the 2005 Defensive Rookie of the Year who has a team-high 8 1/2 sacks, was wearing a boot on his right foot to protect a heel injuiry he suffered in Sunday's victory over the St. Louis Rams.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
