I absolutly LOVE history.
I made a 107 on my history final. :)
I think i want to major in political science with a minor in foreign language.
Like i could see myself as a foreign diplomat or something.
That's a good career. I looked into myself but found I would have almost no chance--I am diabetic and they pretty much told me, "don't bother--you need a 100% medical clearance." It makes sense, but still pisses me off. The rationale is that your first assignments are in the third world, and there isnt' good health care there. Plus I think there is spy work involved. :ninja:

If you go that route, be prepared to be sent to a place in the middle of nowhere for a little bit. Soon, though, it sounds like if you do well promotions rapidly come, and you could be stationed as Senior Aide to the Ambassador of France or something. They have the test a couple of times of year, and I hear the best way to study is to keep abreast of current events. And geography.

Good luck. Most people don't have any idea what they want to do when starting college. I thought I wanted to be a psychologist, then a marketing agent, then a history professor, then a diplomat, then a lawyer. Sadly I went with the wrong one.

You probably already have seen all this, but here's the link to State dept.'s info of Foreign Service Officer.

Yah i've looked at that site.
I mean i absolutly have no idea that's just what im leaning towards most.
Like i've also thought about:

Pysical Therapist- but i hate chemistry, and anything medical requires massive chemistry.
ESPN Reporter- Like those girls that get to go onto the feild and talk to players, wow how awesome.
Lawyer- but then reading Actium's post now i'm looking at eliminating that one.
Fashion Marketing or Design or Consulting- Fashion is My Passion. (i have rap skillz..but you allready knew that.)

Maybe I came across too hard on the law...the thing about it is, you can always go to law school. I recommend at least giving something else a shot after college, for a year or two, and if you like that, stick to it. If you still feel the need to try something else, go to law school.

My view is probably skewed because I just got started (I got licensed 6 months ago) and I've had a real hard time finding a job. In fact, I got zero job offers. Which is unusual. So I had to found my own firm, which right now can't really support me. I hope it will soon, but for the moment it's a lot of work and not much money.

Most of my law friends have jobs, and some have really sweet jobs. some like their positions, others just like the $.

The law isn't for everyone, but I think I may come around to like it at some point (I hope and pray). Don't completely write it off because of my perhaps too hasty words.

Well it was last on my list anyway.
My top one right now is Foreign Diplomat.
Then The ESPN reporter.
Then Fashion.
Then Law.

Good to hear that lawyering is so shitty (not for you, though). I was considering doing that instead of a Ph.D (1/2way through a Masters in History right now).

I think I'll apply to the top Doctoral Schools in the History of Science. If I don't get accepted, I'll go back and get an MA in Botany, which I really like just as well as history anyway.

I think history is what I was supposed to do--it's one of the few things I actually enjoy. I can talk about it forever without getting bored. Those I am talking to, however...

Perhaps my perspective will change if I ever win a case. I really do want to help the little guy, to be a champion for those without a voice. I have a jury trial in about a month, all by myself. that is very rare for someone just starting out. Because I have my own firm, I do everything and have no boss, but no guidance. I have people giving me advice but it's not the same.

The legal market is really under attack right now from big companies, through their lobbyists in state capitals and in DC. The job market for us is not all that hot right now. Couple that with a) my piss-poor grades in law school (I've got no excuses), and B) my inept interviewing, and you have me sans employment. If I can make it on my own it will all be worthwhile. My friend is going to join once he gets licensed.

Manager, Information Systems of a financial institution.

Deal with managing people internally, vendors externally (phone, servers, etc.), and hands on with keeping a network up and running, adding nodes, etc.

Fun, fun. Going into college I was set to be an Orthopaedic Surgeon. I'd even taken 3 years of Latin in high school to help with the medical terminology. Took 2 semesters of the biology / chemistry / lab requirements and decided science wasn't going to be my thing (hated it!!!). Loved math though and that is why I essentially went that route - really enjoyed the various programming courses I had to take. Although, I might get into the programming arena now once every 2-3 years.

I've been doing this for 8 1/2 years.

I am a bartender and a student (not for much longer) and I dabble in Marketing Research when I have extra time... Bartending pays wayyy too much for me to quit while I finish up school, and the Marketing thing doesnt pay enough for me to do it alone while in school. A bit of a conundrum....but Im close to being finished with one of my degrees, then bartending is out the door! (except maybe a couple nights a month, its always nicec to make $200-300 a night- spending cash ya know?)

I also went into the military out of high school though, and 4 years of that lifestyle was enough, thats for sure!

If you are creative and a free thinker, marketing and advertising is an interesting and rewarding way to go. Thats my mindset, and thats what interests me most professionally (I gave up on the rock star dream when it was painfully obvious I couldnt sing, and never learned to play anything but the recorder (and that was limited to "hot crossed buns"))....

The world will always need marketing, its fairly recession proof, and there is money to be made out the wazoo if you play your cards right.

I've been working in the emergency department as a health unit coordinator for a little over three years now. I basically work as an assistant to the doctors and nurses by helping them with orders and what not. You never know what you'll get or what's going to happen in five minutes when you work in the ER which is exactly why I like my job so much. Things can go from normal, to hilarious, do absolutely crazy in ten minutes

Interesting...do you work for the park service or USGS or privately?

I learned it a few years ago in school, and recently used it to find an optimal biking route to avoid both steep inclines and bad neighborhoods while minimizing distance
Not to get personal, but what is your situation financially as far as college goes? Do you have a scholarship, athletic, academic or parental? Do you know where you're going to go to school?
I'm hoping for a softball scholarship. Maybe Soccer, but i tore my rotator cuff last softball season, and as of right now im goin to physical therapy to avoid surgery, but it looks like surgery is the only answer, so i may be out of a scholarship, which hacks me off.
Other than that, no i dont think i'll be gettin an academic scholarship, because although i'm a very smart girl and an extremely good test taker, i don't like to take time to turn in my work. I know how retarded that sounds, but it's true, and no matter how much i tell myself: "Get your act together missy, or no fuckin college is going to accept you", i just can't make myself do the work. Although, it is really easy.
My dad is very wealthy. He is a regional manager for some kind of oil company in FL. That's where my college funding will be coming from, i hope.
If not I'm guessing student loans will take care of some.
I will be attending a Junior college in Orlando for two years then tranferring to UF afterwards.

I want to bartend my way through college also. I want to be a flair bartender though, lol. My sister tells me not to, because that is what she did through college and she made so much money that she didn't want to quit after she graduated and now she's 25 and still bartending even though she has a BA criminal justice degree. I still want to though, becuase it just seems like it would so much fun.

EDIT: Also. I live in a military town, where over half the 250,000 people are either in the military or there spouses are. I would never go into the military. I dated a guy who was in the army, and he was a dumbass. After we broke up, he started a methlab in the barracks. He is now in jail. I've heard from alot of people that after you go into the military it puts so much stress on you that you end up doing things you would never do.
