Friday morning practice notes

Quarterback Carson Palmer did not practice this morning. He will play in the scrimmage tonight. ... Wide receiver Reggie McNeal, in his second season with the Bengals after playing quarterback in college, is having a fine camp and is working as the No. 3 wide receiver with Tab Perry and Antonio Chatman out with injuries.

Perry, for his part, returned to camp from Nashville, Tenn., after visiting his specialist, Dr. Thomas Byrd, to have his hip examined. Perry said he is 100 percent but that the team wants to be cautious. Perry will not play in the scrimmage or mock game.

Both of the Bengals' new backup tight ends, Nate Lawrie and Erik Jensen, practiced this morning.

Center Eric Ghiaciuc and quarterback Doug Johnson fumbled a snap in the red zone this morning, causing this heated reaction by offensive coordinator Bob Bratkowski, "That can't happen down here."

I really thought Brazell and Holt looked better and would be ahead of Mcneal while others are out
Don't forget that Holt tweaked a hamstring 2 days ago and thats probably why mcneal is slotted in there. Lots of bodies dropping on the offensive side of the ball in camp this year.

So McNeal is still being slotted ahead of Brazell after everyone has been raving about how amazing Brazell has been this TC?

Weird. I would hope we aren't planning on letting Bennie go after how awesome he has been doing. No one thinks he will go do they?

Maybe they have already decided and they are making sure they give McNeal a chance to show what he's got before they make it official.
I'm glad to hear it about McNeil....the kid is a phenomenal athlete. Sounds like he's decided to grow up and take his job seriously. I hope he makes it....
Right -- remember, he ran a sub-4.4 40 at the Combine in 2006 - and he's got good size, too. It was going to take him some time to learn to play WR, after having been a QB at A&M. Last year, I think he was in the "I still wanna be a QB" mode, but it sounds like from what I've heard that he's growing up (even though he's still a bit of a knucklehead), and accepted his role.

Not saying he's gonna make the team, but if he's fully dedicated, he's certainly athletic enough to do so. He's great in the open field, and really can be a threat on end-arounds, reverses, QB option plays, etc. -- as we saw in the Indy game on that 3rd down play that he converted for a 1st down.

McNeal is ahead of bennie at the inside slot position, but Brazell has the edge at the outside WR position. The question is would we move TJ inside to the slot and play Brazell or just play McNeal in the slot if the situation arose in a real game.

Friday's practice was held on the soccer field, meanwhile I watched Jon Jo running drills on the football field. He looked good. Ran full speed, made cuts, and didn't appear to have any side effects from the foot injury. He did drop a pass while I was watching though...
