GUNS, ANYONE?

I thought I'd see if any of you out there in Bengaldom were gun owners. I recently came into possession of a Mossberg 500 shotgun for home protection. Quite honestly, things have gotten bad enough in this place that I live in (for now, I am buying a house within the month) that I wanted something outside of my baseball bat for those "just in case" scenarios.

I thought about getting a handgun, but I have two small boys and a weapon of that small size is simply too dangerous unless it's locked away, which in turn defeats the purpose of having a weapon in the first place (in a rapid response situation).
the Mossberg is a 5 shot gun, pump action, 18.5 inch barrel. I have one box of basic birdshot 2 3/4" shells for it, although it can shoot the 3" shells too.
I am borrowing it from a friend until I move, and at that point I will probably buy a shotgun of my own.

Thoughts on guns? Comments? Own any guns you want to talk about?
Anything, anyone?
Bueller?

a shotgun is safer than a handgun?

Ummm, yeah. How easy do you think it would be for a 2 or 5 year old to work the pump action slide? Take off the safety? Not to mention that it's way too long for them to even hold it correctly.
I don't keep it loaded and the safety is on. It's also on the top shelf of a closet where I myself can barely reach it, but I can get it out and have it loaded and ready to fire in about 20 seconds.

Ha! I knew that title alone would get you to respond, adding some hotness to my thread to keep it up there!
I know you don't like guns Jamie, I respect that. I actually don't like them either, but some of the shit that's been going on around here lately and a lack of police involvement makes me quite leery, and if I ever need to defend myself or my family aaginst deadly force, now I can.

Lately anymore since the owners of this park (who cared about whom they rented to and kept it up pretty well) sold it to some California-based company, it has steadily declined here. There's certainly a proliferation of shady people coming and going all hours of the night. So, I got the shottie just in case until I move out to Hidden Valley, likely early next month. True. My main issue is that I can't decide whether or not to use the foreskin from my bris as a canopy for my son's 2nd birthday party next month.

***note, I never actually had a bris , although snippage was part of the 1972 birthing package at, ironically, Christ Hospital in Cincinnati.

...I posted these same thoughts a few weeks ago. Smart man. Never hear about kids shooting their friends with shotguns. Also can't put a shotgun in a bookbag without it being obvious.

Sadly, in today's era of guns in schools, this is also a benefit of the shotgun. I don't need a handgun to carry on my person, I want something in my home that can blow a grapefruit-sized hole in someone should that eventuality become necessary, which I hope it never does.
I wish we lived in a world without guns at all, but that just isn't the case. You have to meet deadly force with deadly force, or....you're dead.

Doesn't this defeat the purpose of having it for protection from home invasion ?

I would think that the only way a gun would be useful in that circumstance is if you kept it loaded under your night stand (also a handgun)
