You know, up until FA and then ultimately the draft, I wouldnt have had anything positive to say. I had just about had it with nearly everyone in the organization it seems. I was pretty happy with FA, and very happy with the draft, and it put me in a much better spot towards having some sort of enthusiasm again for the Bengals/NFL. I'm a pretty emotional fan (or was) and over the 20+ years I remember being a Bengals fan I really cant remember being as fed up as I was last season, due to an accumulation of everything- inept years past, management, retaining certain assistant coaches.. etc etc etc.

Maybe I needed last season to happen to actually provide a disconnect for me, to kind of help me not get too high or too low, and maybe just enjoy the sport rather than living and dying with all of the teams failure (and tiny successes). Anyway, I'm glad I wasnt able to log in to bitch, and when I was reinstated, I subconsciously decided to not really start posting again.

Of course, when TC starts I'll be posting again.

There are cigarette machines everywhere still, but they require you to swipe an [i]Ausweis[/i] (German national ID card) or a driver's license so Cigarettes don't end up in the hands of youngsters, although they invariably do end up there. I don't smoke, so I have no idea about the quantities of cigarettes in a pack.

In Munich, [i]Pils[/i] isn't the beer of choice; here everyone drinks [i]Helles[/i], which is also very good. [i]Helles[/i] is not as bitter and a little sweeter than [i]Pils[/i]. Christian Moerlein is essentially a Munich [i]Helles[/i], whereas Warsteiner (served at PBS) is a typical, albeit a little weak, German [i]Pils[/i]. Munich brands I've seen available in the US include Löwenbräu (green bottle, so avoid unless you like that skunk ala Heineken flavor), Spaten (called "shovel beer" by the locals because it gives a nasty hangover; also avoid), Paulaner Münchner Hell (yes, buy this stuff), and I have seen Augustiner Edelstoff at the Party Source in Bellevue for a ridiculous $9 a six-pack. But it's some of the best stuff you can get.

Here, you buy [i]Helles[/i] by the 1/2 liter bottle for about 0.80€ each or a case of 20 for 15€. Deposit on the bottles are 0.08€ and 1€ on the case. At Oktoberfest this year, one liter (34 ounces) of beer will cost 8.60€. Just a little pricey. Exchange rate is now 1€ to $1.4347. So that beer will cost you $12.34 plus ATM fees when your bank screws you for international withdrawals.

When I was in Hanau (Fliegerhorst Kaserne, now defunct I believe), we drank a shit-ton of this stuff called Binding Export. I used to think I was some grand beer snob when I was 19, in the Army and swilling German bier. Only to find out later that Binding Export is pretty much crap beer!

I'd like to get back to Deutschland someday. When I was there before I was too busy with Army shit and being young and drunk. I'd like to see the sights, visit some castles, mingle in the beer tents with the Lederhosen-clad elders and just chill. Stoically, of course. You can't show emotions around those damn Germans or it's the end of you...

A pint of piss beer will cost you better than $10 US here. Paying $15 for a liter of the world's best beer is a downright bargain.

If you ever see Augustiner beer anywhere, buy a bottle. Any style. Fantastic stuff.

They are if you're more of an "effect drinker" than a "flavor" one....and even then, American microbrews are accomplishing in twenty years what the famed breweries of Europe have been doing for centuries...this is one area where American ingenuity has certainly taken a foothold and therefore lessened the prices of imported beers that we can now readily imitate.
