As feared, linebacker Lemar Marshall suffered a season-ending torn left Achilles tendon in Monday night's game against New England and was put on injured reserve.

After arriving Aug. 23 following Rashad Jeanty's own leg injury, Marshall, a Cincinnati prep product from St. Xavier, started the first four games at strong-side linebacker and had 10 tackles. He also had sack for a safety against Seattle and a forced fumble against Baltimore.

They filled his spot with Corey Mays, picked up on waivers from the Patriots. The 6-1, 245-pound Mays is a second-year NFL player out of Notre Dame whose contract runs through this year.

Mays played in the opener, with one special teams tackle, was inactive the next two and was waived prior to Monday's game. A former college free agent, Mays played in eight games with two tackles on defense and eight on special teams last season.

Today feels like the week after the playoff loss after the 2005 season. Will Marvin Lewis make good on his threat? Will any player actually say -- Keiwan Ratliff did -- that he doesn't want a job with the Bengals? How many changes will be made? How many can, in reality, be made? Football is different than trading for a pitcher or aging power hitter for the pennant drive in baseball. What is clear is this: The 2007 are Marvin Lewis' football team. There is just one defensive player, end Justin Smith, left from Lewis took over. Lewis has had five drafts and five free-agency periods. The condition of the Bengals is the responsibility of two people, Lewis and, ultimately, team president Mike Brown. They only have themselves to blame for the character issues with some players. They only have themselves to blame or credit for the drafts. They are responsible for how the salary cap money is used. It's not just Lewis. It's Brown, maybe even more than Lewis because Brown holds veto power.Brown refers to himself, his daughter, team vice president Katie Blackburn, and her husband, vice president Troy Blackburn, as the Bengals' composite general manager. Still others close to the team say Lewis is the de facto general manager, that the weight of personnel decision rests on him. Who knows for sure? Maybe the job of head coach-unofficial general manager is too large for one person. It was for Seattle head coach Mike Holmgren.Maybe the Bengals need a general manager, someone like Baltimore's Ozzie Newsome or Indianapolis' Bill Polian.Which leads to the question: Is Lewis in trouble? No. The stadium was sold-out Monday night for the 30th consecutive time, and the crowd was a franchise record. Merchandise is flying off shelves like never before. And maybe there's an attitude somewhere in the building that 8-8 and 9-7 are good records. After all, they're a lot beffore than 4-12.posted by Mark at 3:49 PM 3 comments

Of course there is...and it comes straight from Mike Brown's office. Gutsy of Curnutte to imply what many of us have always known though...
Davie spoke highly of linebacker Corey Mays. The Chicago native, who has a 4.3 grade point average, clearly drew the attention of the Irish coaches early.

"He has great explosiveness and great quickness," Davie said. "I really like him."

Mays was a USA Today second team All-American and was ranked No. 54 among all prep players by the Chicago Sun Times.
Whoopie! Another castoff LB signed...

Hey Mike Brown...there's something else you could do--it's called a TRADE.

Why don't you try to get a GOOD LB instead of all these goddam retreads?

If not, it looks like you're giving up on this season just like some of the players.

Wha ?

Curnutte says "MAYBE" and you think that somehow validates your feelings ?

Curnutte also said that Brooks was going to start and Peko was
going to be playing FB on Offense . . .

If you could convice me this team was one good linebacker away from being elite, I might get behind you on this. However, I think we are a couple good, healthy linebackers away from being mediocre. Don't sacrifice tomorrow for a mediocre today.

Marvin Lewis: "Hey, the Patriots chose Adalius Thomas, and we chose Ed Hartwell. I stand by my decision, and you people are too stupid to understand anyway."

Fans: Yes! Preach it Marvin! Injuries are the culprit! Again.

Sounds like last year. I love when people use the fact that we are more than one player away as a reason not to get any player. Might as well save that cap money for a rainy day eh? No one good out there eh? Not for the Bengals anyway...

Thats because now is not when you want to be worrying about this.

The time to worry about this was last offseason when everyone here and Marvin Lewis himself, swore that we were good to go at LB.

Many here knew that we were going into the season with a swiss cheese defense. Then once the injury bug bit us...well thats all it takes to sink teams like the Bengals.

But I'm with you man... people need to get realistic. There isnt anyone out there, and even if there was, we wouldnt have any interest anyway. The seats are already sold out, so why spend anymore money?
