*** MIKE ZIMMER IS THE NEW DC ***
research young coaches with little pro experience. Kind of a knock on our small scouting department, switching the focus from players to coaches. Just joking really.
gotcha, though I think it is a little different when its YOUR young coaches and players that you are looking at. Who knows if Garrett is a OC anywhere, let alone Dallas if he wasn't a former Dallas QB. It was easier that Jerry Jones had a history with Garrett and knew what he was capable of.
Word has it, through the grapevine, is that Zimmer will be in town to sign a deal here Monday, The Bengals wanted Rex Ryan but are worried that it will take too long, if they get the right to interview him at all from Baltimore, too many teams in the race for a DC not to mention the HC jobs he may get. So Mike Zimmer it is....

Also Zimmer is in hand for some scouting at the combine and the senior bowl,...
Done deal

This from the Bengals:

BENGALS HIRE MIKE ZIMMER

AS DEFENSIVE COORDINATOR

The Bengals today filled the team’s defensive coordinator position with the hiring of Mike Zimmer, who has been an NFL coordinator for the past eight seasons.

Zimmer was Dallas Cowboys defensive coordinator from 2000-06, including four years (2003-06) under head coach Bill Parcells. Zimmer moved to the Atlanta Falcons as coordinator in 2007. With the departure of Bobby Petrino as Falcons head coach, members of his staff were freed to pursue other opportunities.

“Mike has coordinated defenses at a high level in the NFL for a number of years,” said Bengals head coach Marvin Lewis, “and this is obviously a very important hire for me and for our organization. I’m excited about utilizing Mike’s ability to develop our young players and our defensive scheme.”

Zimmer, 51, is in his 15th season as an NFL coach in 2008. He joined the NFL with Dallas in 1994, and after six seasons working primarily as secondary coach, he was elevated to coordinator. He coached 15 years in the college ranks before joining the Cowboys, working at Missouri, Weber State and Washington State.

In Zimmer’s 13 years with Dallas, the Cowboys defense earned seven top 10 rankings in fewest yards allowed, and the team advanced to the postseason seven times. His 2003 defense led the NFL at 253.5 yards allowed per game as the team posted a 10-6 record. He earned a Super Bowl ring as an assistant with the 1995 Cowboys team that defeated Pittsburgh in Super Bowl XXX.

Zimmer was instrumental in the development of a number of defensive stars at Dallas, including S Roy Williams, CB Terence Newman and LB DeMarcus Ware. Williams has been named to his fifth Pro Bowl this season, while Newman and Ware are each in the Pro Bowl a second time.

This Falcon board appears to be their version of go-bengals. They all seem fairly pissed to see him go:

Admittedly, it is reassuring to hear positive comments from the fans. Yeah, I know fans are not as informed as the "experts", but I think in a general sense you can get a feel for a guys capabilities. For example, this is very much in contrast to what we heard from the Oakland fan base and there general opinion of Bresnahan. And actually, I believe the Oakland fanbase was dead on in terms of what we could expect and saw in terms of Bres' Defensive philosophy.

CINCINNATI — The Bengals' coaching staff just got a breath of fresh air with the hiring of Mike Zimmer as defensive coordinator on Tuesday.

Known for his fiery, tough, emotional style, Zimmer will attempt to bring the same kind of success to the Bengals that he experienced as the Dallas Cowboys' coordinator from 2000-06.

Zimmer, who takes over for the fired Chuck Bresnahan, spent the 2007 season with Atlanta. But he was set free to pursue other opportunities after a miserable 4-12 season in which former Falcons head coach Bobby Petrino quit with three games remaining.

Zimmer's goal: Jump-start a Cincinnati defense that ranked 27th out of 32 teams, yielding 348.8 yards a game. It's the fourth time in five years the defense was 27th or lower.

"Mike has coordinated defenses at a high level in the NFL for a number of years," said Bengals head coach Marvin Lewis, "and this is obviously a very important hire for me and for our organization. I'm excited about utilizing Mike's ability to develop our young players and our defensive scheme."

Zimmer, 51, joined the Cowboys in 1994, working six seasons primarily as secondary coach before he was elevated to coordinator.

In his 13 years with Dallas, the defense earned seven top-10 rankings in fewest yards allowed, and the team advanced to the postseason seven times. His 2003 defense led the NFL at 253.5 yards allowed per game en route to a 10-6 record.

He was instrumental in the development of several Cowboys Pro Bowl players, including safety Roy Williams, cornerback Terence Newman and linebacker DeMarcus Ware.
Bengals hire Zimmer to shore up defense
Wednesday, January 16, 2008 3:15 AM

Veteran NFL coach Mike Zimmer is the latest man hired to fix the Bengals defense, a feat that has eluded the franchise for most of its existence. He arrives with plenty of experience under his belt and plenty of room for improvement on the field.

The Bengals ranked 27th of 32 teams in yards allowed and 24th in points allowed in 2007. They have ranked among the bottom half of the league in yards allowed in 20 of the past 23 years.

Zimmer was unavailable for comment yesterday. He will be introduced as the team's new defensive coordinator during a news conference today in Paul Brown Stadium.

Zimmer will be the third defensive coordinator in Marvin Lewis' five-plus seasons as coach, following Leslie Frazier and the recently fired Chuck Bresnahan. The Bengals have ranked among the bottom six teams in yards allowed in four of Lewis' five seasons.

"Mike has coordinated defenses at a high level in the NFL for a number of years, and this is obviously a very important hire for me and for our organization," Lewis said in a statement. "I'm excited about utilizing Mike's ability to develop our young players and our defensive scheme."

Zimmer was the Dallas Cowboys defensive coordinator from 2000 to 2006, and he was defensive coordinator in Atlanta last season.

He is said to prefer a simple but aggressive scheme, which should be a welcome change for the young Bengals. Some players said their late-season improvement resulted in part because the coaching staff scaled back the playbook. While players stopped short of criticizing Bresnahan, it was clear some preferred a simpler, faster style.
Falcons' defensive coordinator leaves for Cincinnati
With staff in limbo, Zimmer departs after just one season.

By STEVE WYCHE
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

Falcons defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer accepted the defensive coordinator's job with the Cincinnati Bengals on Tuesday. Zimmer will replace Chuck Bresnahan, who was fired after the season.

Though Atlanta finished ranked 29th in overall defense, Zimmer was credited with doing a solid job with a unit that was plagued by injuries and inexperience and was spared little relief by one of NFL's worst offenses.

Zimmer left the Dallas Cowboys after 13 seasons to join former Falcons coach Bobby Petrino. Petrino quit with three games remaining, putting all of the assistant coaches in peril.

The Bengals also received permission to interview Falcons offensive coordinator Hue Jackson, who joined Atlanta's coaching staff in 2007 after coaching Cincinnati's wide receivers. Jackson is expected to explore opportunities as offensive coordinator in St. Louis and Washington.

Though the Falcons' assistant coaches remain under contract, they have been allowed to pursue other opportunities while the team interviews coaching candidates. Several Falcons assistants have already accepted collegiate jobs.

thats an average of 16th place excluding 2007. middle of the road, 17th including 2007.
Middle of the road gets us to the playoffs EASY and makes us a dangerous team.

For all the crap Petrino got, it sure seems like everyone is abandoning ship in Atlanta. Problems must run much deeper than we think i.e. the players are running the Titanic, at night, at full speed, DRUNK.

Dude on the Homer is going on and on and on
about how the Bengals should have held out for
Ryan. He is also saying the Bengals are settling
for a 5 or 6, instead of going for the 9 or 10.

Forget that Ryan is still in the running for
a HC position. And that the Ravens might not
let him come here even if he doesn`t get a HC job.
Let`s risk losing a chance at hiring our 2nd choice
for the CHANCE to sign our 1st choice, and maybe have
to settle for our 3rd choice !!!1111
Bengals name Zimmer
By GEOFF HOBSON
January 15, 2008
Updated: 1-16-08, 10:35 a.m.

The scouting report on new Bengals defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer:

Fiery. Emotional. No nonsense.

Kevin Hardy, the former linebacker who came to Cincinnati in 2003 the year after he played for Zimmer in Dallas, said Monday night that players will know where they stand.

"He's the kind of guy that he'll show you exactly what he wants you to do," Hardy said. "And if you don't do it, he'll find somebody that will. He'll draw it up on the board and he's got which guy should make the tackle at what spot."

The Bengals made the move official Tuesday and tapped the former Cowboys and Falcons defensive coordinator in what looks to be a return to the 4-3 defense.

Also Tuesday, no word on the status of former receivers coach and Falcons offensive coordinator Hue Jackson with the club. The Bengals have received permission to talk to him, but since all the offensive coaches have signed contracts for '08 there may be no room unless another coach leaves.

That could happen if quarterbacks coach Ken Zampese hooks on with the Rams as offensive coordinator. The St. Louis-Dispatch reported Zampese has interviewed with the Rams, the latest in a series of teams that have courted him over the last several years, including the Jets and Panthers.

Like Jackson, another NFL offensive coordinator who was Bengals quarterback Carson Palmer's offensive coordinator at USC came on the market Tuesday when Norm Chow was fired by the Titans. His name has been linked to the Bengals on at least one Internet site, ProFootballTalk.com, but Jackson's tight relationship with the Bengals receivers is also a huge draw.

Zimmer needs to bring a linebackers coach to fill Ricky Hunley's spot and it won't be his backers coach in Atlanta. Brian VanGorder, who coordinated the Georgia defense of Bengals David Pollack and Odell Thurman, is the now the coordinator at South Carolina.

Like the man who hired Zimmer, head coach Marvin Lewis, he arrives after spending seven years as a coordinator with one perennial playoff contender (Dallas), one year with another team (Atlanta), and winning a Super Bowl ring as a secondary coach with the 1995 Cowboys.

He's the third coordinator hired by Lewis in his six seasons and brings more experience in the role than Chuck Bresnahan (four years in Oakland) and rookie coordinator Leslie Frazier.

Zimmer is going to be introduced Wednesday at an 11 a.m. Paul Brown Stadium news conference.

"Mike has coordinated defenses at a high level in the NFL for a number of years," Lewis said in a press release. "This is obviously a very important hire for me and for our organization. I'm excited about utilizing Mike's ability to develop our young players and our defensive scheme."

Zimmer, 51, arrives with a steel-belted resume. In the past few seasons, he has turned down the Nebraska head coaching job before it was offered to Bill Callahan, the day after he got hired in Atlanta last year he interviewed for the Chargers' head job, and Bill Parcells retained him when he took the head job in Dallas in 2003.

Zimmer made his mark in Dallas during 13 seasons with the Cowboys, six in the secondary and seven as coordinator in a stretch the defense earned seven top 10 rankings and the No. 1 spot in 2003.

And one thing he's done that no Bengals defensive coordinator has done since Dick LeBeau in 1990 is coach a draft pick to the Pro Bowl.

Just this past season in Dallas, safety Roy Williams was named to his fifth Pro Bowl, and cornerback Terence Newman and linebacker DeMarcus Ware are in their second.

During Zimmer's one year in Atlanta this past season, the No. 29 defense not only suffered from the loss of quarterback Michael Vick, but it lost its two starting defensive tackles at the beginning of the season, played a rookie defensive end in Jamaal Anderson, and a rookie cornerback in Chris Houston.

Zimmer's charge is as daunting as it is simple: He has to raise the level of a defense that hasn't been above No. 27 in four of Lewis' previous five seasons.

Plus, the Bengals may very well not have returning two of their leading tacklers in right end Justin Smith and linebacker Landon Johnson, and they could end up starting a pair of two-year safeties.

It remains to be seen if Zimmer is going to bring along his own playbook, or if Lewis tries to graft some of the Bengals' current system on Zimmer's stuff.

But one thing seems almost definite. Zimmer is a 4-3 guy that reluctantly changed to a 3-4 under Parcells the last couple of years in Dallas.

Before joining the Cowboys, Zimmer coached 15 years in the college ranks at Missouri, Weber State and Washington State.
Well no shit, I think we could have hired "diet pepsi machine" to be the new DC and upgraded.

In all seriousness, I'm pretty happy with the decision.
