My wildcards are Roenicke is in, Bray starts on DL, Stanton gets cut, Coffey is dealt or cut or sent down if still has options, Castro makes 25 man and Freel (or hopper) gets dealt

Wow - looking over these last two proposals, this team looks good. For the first time in a while, I think the problem is 'who gets left out?' instead of 'whom can we find?' Except at catcher, of course, although I don't think Ross can possibly look worse at the plate than he did last year. And if he does, it won't be called the Mendoza line anymore. I think I'm really going to like this team.

I agree. My prediction had Bruce, Cueto, Volquez, and Coutlangus not making the team out of camp. I can see being wrong on each of those guys. I think the team will have to make a move with either Castro or Freel.

As for Ross, I'm thinking the same thing. He can't be as bad as he was last year.

Heres my guess for the 25 man roster on opening day:

Everyday Players (8):
1B Joey Votto
2B Brandon Phillips
SS Alex Gonzalez
3B Edwin Encarnacion
LF Adam Dunn
CF Norris Hopper (Bruce will likely start the season in AAA)
RF Ken Griffey Jr.
C David Ross

Bench (5):
OF/IF Ryan Freel
IF Juan Castro
IF Jeff Keppinger
1B Scott Hatteberg
C Javier Valentin

Rotation (5):
SP Aaron Harang
SP Bronson Arroyo
SP Matt Belisle
SP Edison Volquez
SP Jeremy Affeldt (I wouldn't mind seeing Bailey, Cueto or possibly Maloney get a shot at this spot)

Bullpen (7):
RP Francisco Cordero (Closer)
RP David Weathers (7th/8th inning / spot closer)
RP Jared Burton (7th/8th inning)
RP Gary Majewski (Hes part of "the trade" so the Reds will give him another chance)
RP Jon Coutlangus (Lefty specialist) (Wouldn't be surprised if it was Stanton instead of Coutlangus)
RP Josh Fogg (Long relief)
RP Todd Coffey (The Reds will give him another chance) (Could be Roenicke if he has an impressive spring training)

We could also see Sergio Valenzuela on the roster if the Reds want to try and keep him like they did with Burton and Hamilton last season.
I would like to see 2 of the young pitchers make the opening day roster I just dont see it happening.
Volquez will be on the team ... and I wouldn't be shocked seeing Cueto in the pen.

Regardless, Volquez will be on this team opening day.

If bailey volquez and cueto made the opening day roster I would be estatic.

My ideal roster, dont think it will happen, but ideally for me would be...

1st-Votto
2nd-Phillips
SS-Gonzalez
3rd-Edwin
RF-Griffey
CF-Bruce
LF-Dunn

Bench (5)
Keppinger
Hopper
Freel
Hatteberg
Valentin

SP
Harang
Arroyo
Fogg or Belisle (affledt can go to the pen, i dont know if either of these other guys can)
Bailey
Volquez

RP (7)
Affeldt
Cordero
Weathers
Bray
Majewski
Burton
Coffey or Coutlangus whoever wins the job

Cut Stanton and whoever loses the job between belisle and fogg, or trade them. Also cut castro we dont need both him and gonzalez.
Let Cueto get some starts in at AAA and be the first guy to come in if one of the starters sucks or gets hurt.
I think Hatteburg will start the season at 1st, then share it with Votto, as Votto gains experience.

I think Bruce will be in triple A for a month or so depending on how he plays.
Both of those decisions would be terrible decisions, they need to play sometime why not start the year with them and give them some confidence coming out of camp?

I don't think Bruce will be handed the job straight away. Votto, on the other hand, already went through the sharing phase last year, and performed very well. The job should be his, and if Baker uses Mr. Hatt more than sporadically, he's a fool.

The way things look right now, Bruce is going to have to have a Josh Hamilton-esque spring to make the big league club. Freel and Hopper are a logical platoon in CF unless Bruce just blows them away. Bruce will get a chance at some point, but I just get the feeling that the club wants him to start the year in Louisville.

You're dead right about Votto. The job is his to lose and I'll be surprised if Hatteberg plays unless Votto really struggles.

I see the competition for left-handed pitchers in the bullpen as being the toughest in camp. I still see Affeldt being one of those guys. Fogg's signing pretty much ended any chance he had to make the rotation, IMO. Mike Stanton, Bill Bray, John Coutlangus, Kent Mercker, and Scott Sauerbeck are competing for one or two spots. Stanton was terrible last year, Bray is hurt again, and Mercker is still coming off elbow surgery. That gives Coutlangus and Sauerbeck (career 3.82 ERA) a better chance. Stanton might have a good chance just because he is healthy.

Not as much competition for the right-handers. Three spots are locked up by Cordero, Weathers, and Burton. Majewski, Roenicke, and Coffey are battling for probably two spots. Volquez might also go to the pen if he doesn't make the rotation.
