Record crowd witnesses city's first pro title since 1990:headbang:
BY TOM RAMSTETTER

There was nothing minor-league about the scene inside US Bank Arena Thursday night as the Cyclones became the first Cincinnati pro sports team to win a championship since 1990.

A record crowd of 12,722 watched Cincinnati beat Las Vegas 3-1 in Game 6 to win the Kelly Cup Finals four games to two.

It was the largest playoff crowd in the history of the ECHL and the Cyclones. It was the seventh-largest hockey crowd in US Bank Arena history.

Cyclones forward Matt Syroczynski scored a power-play goal less than a minute into the third period, giving the Cyclones a 2-1 lead and putting Cincinnati in position to claim its first East Coast Hockey League title.

Defenseman Jon Gleed’s goal with 13:08 remaining was good for a 3-1 lead and inspired a chant of “We want the cup.”

The Wranglers had tied the game at 1-1 with a power-play goal 18:39 into the second period. Las Vegas’ Adam Cracknell found the net with 1:21 remaining before intermission.

Cracknell was assisted by Jason Krischuk and Peter Ferraro.

The goal ended a streak of 132:25 (almost two games worth of time) without a goal allowed by Cyclones goalie Cedrick Desjardins.

The Cyclones played most of the final three minutes of the second period down two players. Brian Schmidt was sent to the box first for tripping with 4:48 left and was followed by Scott Reynolds, who was called for tripping with 3:28 left.

The Wranglers could do nothing with the two-man advantage, but Barret Ehgoetz was sent to the box with 2:31 left for another two-man advantage. Reynolds returned to the ice before the Las Vegas goal, but the added man couldn’t stop it.

The Wranglers outshot the Cyclones 11-10 in the second.

Cincinnati was outshot 13-9 in the first period, but got a goal from Jean-Michel Daoust with 4:02 left in the period on an assist from David Desharnais to take a 1-0 lead. The goal was scored with a player from each team in the penalty box.

Reynolds was called for tripping 14:36 into the game, setting Las Vegas up for the power play. But the Wranglers’ Brandon Kaleniecki was called for interference less than a minute later and the Cyclones got on the board.

The Cyclones won Cincinnati’s seventh hockey championship.

The IHL Cincinnati Mohawks won five straight titles from 1953-1957 as the top minor league affiliate of the Montreal Canadiens. In that span, Montreal won three Stanley Cup titles.

The AHL Cincinnati Swords won the last hockey title for Cincinnati in 1973.

The Cyclones also became the first Cincinnati pro sports team to clinch a championship in Hamilton County since the Mohawks beat the Troy Bruins in a Game 7 on April 3, 1955 at the Cincinnati Gardens.

The last six local titles have been won on the road.

The Reds won three of those titles, completing World Series-four-game sweeps at Oakland in 1990 and New York in 1976, and outlasting the Red Sox in Game 7 in Boston in 1975.

The Mohawks clinched in 1957 at Indianapolis and 1956 at Toledo-Marion.

The Swords’ clincher over Nova Scotia in 1973 was technically a home game, but it took place in Buffalo because the home rink was not available.

Of the 12 pro championships won by teams representing the city of Cincinnati, just two were clinched at home – the Mohawks’ in 1955 and the Reds’ World Series Championship in 1940 over Detroit.
Fuck yea!

Pisses me off that i couldnt go to any of the games anymore, living in Toledo now.

Still, i think thats the longest article ever printed on them that ive read, and it takes winning the championship to get it.
I used to hate that the Cyclones and Ducks only got half a paragraph on the side columns in the Enquirer sports section. Coverage was shitty for having two teams. Not sure how it is now.

A couple years back when the Cyclones almost went to the championship it was pathetic the turnout they had. Down 3 games to 0 in the division finals and they come back to force a game 7 against Atlantic City (i think) and there was barely a couple hundred people at the arena. All it got was 10-12 lines of print too.
i wish the cyclones still had the support they had in the early 90s.... nothin better than gettin drunk and cheering the fights on for 5$ a pop
Winning championships is a great way to start getting that support back.

Moving back to the Gardens would be another...
