I live in a suburb with a nice little fenced in yard. We have 3 kids - 10, 8 and 3 and we're finally taking the plunge and getting a puppy. We want something small and it will probably be pretty much a house dog. Any breed suggestions?
Good for you. Dogs are the best.

I have a pug. Greastest dog I've evr had. Super laid back, cute, loving, and just wants to be involved and around you.
Sheds...thats the only down side.

Poodles are great dogs too with kids.

Even Jessica loves her Pugs

Again, Pug > all.

How many dogs would be doing this?

Here she is with her winter coat (gf likes to spoil her to death)

You could set her down by a freakin bunny and she would try to cuddle with it.

Greatest, most laid back dog I have ever seen.

We can walk her around the neighborhood without using a leash.

A lovely pooch; but I hope you don't mind me saying that it looks like a cicada.

I live in a small area in Louisville KY called the Highlands which has very small two floor houses and very little to no yard. I had a Jack Russel Terrier who was a great friend and family member but when I had to go to a Drill meet at UK my parents put him down. He was twelve. When we first got him i was three when i was three months. But when i got back from the drill meet we immeaditly started to look at dog on the web. We found the perfect breed. Basinji. They are african hound dogs that will only get about 17 inches at the shoulder. The awsome thing is that they dont bark! He rarely make any noise unless they are glad to see you or if you teach him to make noise when they wan to go out. They are very protective of their family. The only thing that gets on my nerves is that they bite alot when they are young. And they tear up paper especially paper towels. If you are interested and if you live near by i got my dog in Evensville, IN. He's a BIG colts fan so watch out!

Well no shit... the little fat f*ckers can't run away from you...

j/k :ninja::ninja::ninja::one more :ninja: just to make sure you know I'm just jerking your chain.

Honestly, we had neighbors that had two pugs and they were really good dogs. Got a little barky but not bad - my only gripe with them was the shedding in the house. I can't stand shedding. That is just a personal issue and that is why I'd only own a poodle or schnauzer.
Toy Poodle, man. I know they aren't the most masculine dogs out there but they can't be beat in any area.

* Long life span
* Extremely smart
* Not aggressive
* Loyal to the family and protective of kids
* Don't shed their hair and if they do it's a fuzzy ball that's easy to pick up.
* Don't get that dog smell even if they aren't bathed regularly

I've had poodle's in my family my entire life. Along with some of the other breeds that are mentioned on here. I loved all my dogs like they were my kids but honestly, the Poodles have been the best of the bunch.
MULLY

Here are my babies. The one on the right passed away last August at the ripe old age of 15.

And here is the one on the left in the above photo before a hair cut. I love that fat mushy face.

Damn, mine would run full speed at the sight of another dog, person, or wind blowing a tree.

Not a bad barker either, but a good little guard dog. If someone knocks at the door or rings the doorbell...you know it.

What is her name...mine is Oliver (fawn)

Her name is Kyla.

She will bark when someone knocks, but that's it.
If you are committed to smaller dogs, we had Shelties when I was a teen and they were great dogs.

If you are willing to consider a bigger dog, you will not find a more loving dog, or more gentle with kids than a Great Dane.
I have a Sheltie (also now as Shetland Sheepdogs) and they are by far the best dog I have ever owned. Great with kids, very loyal, very smart and easy to train.
I have to say, as an unwilling participant in cat ownership, that this is patently false. I can smell their ammonia-laden shitbox from a mile away, regardless of how clean it is. I have owned cats, and they are perfect apartment pets, if you can get used to the ammonia smell, which is suprisingly easy to get used to.
I love my cat. I never considered myself a cat person until I got her. I am an animal fan in general.

Wow thanks for all the responses. I didn't expect that much feedback. We're heading to the pound to look tomorrow. We want to see if there is anything there that we can adopt first. They have a couple mixed puppies that we are going to look at first.

Kudos to you for rescuing an animal from the pound.

Same here. I never liked cats until we got one from the pound for my wife.

She ended up being my cat, and I was devastated when she passed... :(

I have to say Pug too, for a little dog.

I have always had big dogs, and with still being a renter (it is damn near impossible to rent with a big dog), when my Rotty finally went to the big dog park in the sky, I knew the only logical choice would be no dog or small dog.

I tried to go with no dog, but the silence and lack of life in my apartment was deafening.

I hate little yippy dogs, hyper dogs, biting dogs, barking dogs, and fearful dogs. That pretty much sums up every single small dog breed, except Pugs.

My pug is smart as hell, though a little stubborn (although so was my Rott so that may be my fault). She can learn a new trick in one 5 minute sitting. You never ever have to yell at them, they pick up the inflection in your voice and know they are wrong. All she wants to do is chill. But if its going for a ride, taking a walk, or going to the dog park, she is all about it. Has never met a man, woman or child she didnt love. Or an animal too.

She lets me know when people are around, but doesnt bark or yip. She isnt afraid of anything, but isnt aggressive toward anything either. She loves attention, but will not bother me for it 24 hours a day.

She has become everyones favorite dog, in no time at all. I have pool parties and she is the center of attention. Girls fight over her, she goes on rafts with people or by herself, and just generally loves being in the middle of the mix. Always a clown, but never does anything bad.

She doesnt bite, chew on things, jump on the couch and do other things that less balanced (most) nuerotic smaller dogs do.

Pugs are the only dog breed to be bred specifically to be companion dogs, so 99% of the time, they show the disposition you want them to show, depending on the activities you are or arent doing.

And, to dispell a common myth, Pugs only get fat when owners are negligent, they are not a fat breed.

I agree with the entire post, but especially this.

Except for a 6 month period when she kept sneaking cat food, our pug is skinny as can be.

Well the pound didn't work out. We went there and looked at the "Hound Mix" puppies they had....They were mixed with Labrador and they were already big so we didn't end up getting any of that litter. All the other puppies they had were either spoken for or were too new to get one. So we went to plan B. We ended up settling on a Mini Schnauzer. We've had her a week and so far so good. The kids are completely into it. My 5 year old daughter wakes up and finds the puppy first thing and pretty much plays with her most of the day. The puppy, of coarse, is her latest dress up toy...poor dog :)

We ended up naming her Jovi and she's 10 weeks now. Thanks for all the insight on here. As dumb as it sounds I didn't even think about stuff like shedding. I havn't had a dog since I was a kid and I just didn't know what to consider. Anyway after someone mentioned Schanuzer and non shedding it went on my short list pretty quick. So far she's great. I was leary of getting a puppy. I'm swamped with a lot of stuff (3 Kids, My own business, life in general) but I always wanted the kids to have a dog and I honestly think this was the right time to do it. They will all remember her as a puppy and I think thats important.

Anyway here she is. Thanks to everyone for putting in your two cents.
