Squirrlnutz Posted December 7, 2008 Report Posted December 7, 2008 Watched it keeping an eye on Smith and Caldwell and Spikes. Both OL are studs without a doubt. I would take the C Caldwell with our 3rd pick (which I hope is our 2nd rounder as we get another first for trading a WR) and I think the OL would be significantly better, the guy is a beast. Spikes was relatively disappointing, though admittedly I don't really know what to look for but I was hoping for an active guy plugging the holes and racking up tackles. The announcers seem to think his strength is coverage and talked a lot about being the best MLB in the NCAA for reading the QBs eyes, but he was nowhere to be found against the run and they ran it up the middle and off the guard right a lot. He gave up and stopped running on plays frequently only to have the guy break a tackle and then he ended up making the tackle another 2 yards downfield. From what I've seen, Lauranitis looks like a better inside backer.
bengalbutch Posted December 7, 2008 Report Posted December 7, 2008 I almost started a post myself about Spikes. I watched him exclusively during the game because so many on this board have clamored over him. I don't get all the love for this guy. Not impressed at all. Maybe he had a bad game.
|Tigers Johnson| Posted December 7, 2008 Report Posted December 7, 2008 I have been saying all along our first three picks should be.... 1. Andre Smith 2. Antoine Caldwell 3. Glenn Coffee All from Alabama....
BurnsBengal Posted December 7, 2008 Report Posted December 7, 2008 I'm 100% with you on Spikes. I gotta wonder if the overrated tag is starting to catch up to him because I've been reading these thoughts more and more. However, I gotta say, I've been watching Andre Smith now for half the season (since the Bengals looked to be picking high) and put me firmly in the 'meh' category. I'm just not impressed by the guy. He seems sloppy and gets beat enough to where I have to wonder what the hype is about and why he is being rated so high. Tell you what, watch the Big12 championship tonight. Not to mention with that kind of size you could probably put him in at our RT and maul. I guess that goes in the 'whatdoIknow' because he's rated the 4th or 5th best tackle available, but he looks like a stud to me and at least better than Smith.
Squirrlnutz Posted December 7, 2008 Author Report Posted December 7, 2008 I didn't think Smith played poorly, but admittedly Its easier to watch the LB spot. Bama didn't give up any sacks right (atleast until the last few minutes when it was lost already)? And I definitley noticed Smith leading the way on a couple runs including a TD. Not gonna be able to watch the Big 12 'ship, we are getting the De La Hoya fight cause my Fiance` is a big boxing fan. EDIT: I thought they said Coffee was a freshman...I guess a quick ESPN search could answer this, but I'm drunk and really fucking lazy.
BengalInPa Posted December 7, 2008 Report Posted December 7, 2008 BengalButch, I'm with you, although I seen him play all year, the good ones don't have off or half ass games, They bring it!!! game in and game out!!! So I think I will have to pass on this one, especially seeing that it was a big game on the big stage and I was not impressed. Granted I thik he's good, but i'm not blown away to go run and sign him up. JMO
Squirrlnutz Posted December 7, 2008 Author Report Posted December 7, 2008 I hope if...when they take an LB he's more of a pass rush guy like Curry or Selvie (DE from USF who'll probably be an LB at the next level).

Its easy to root for De La Hoya and my woman certainly is, but I don't really know anything about Pac man. The only thing I really really want to see is a fair score card if goes that far. Can't stand it when 2 judges have it 120-108 for guy A and the other has it 115-113 for guy B. For $55 it better be a damn good fight, no matter who wins.

Don't you think the defense giving up 35 might have something to do with them being on the field for 55/60 minutes? Since our offense can't make a first down unless the opposing D jumps offsides in their eagerness to kill the QB who is obviously getting the ball even though he's a backup, because our GENIUS OFFENSIVE COORDINATOR ADMITS HE DOESN'T LIKE TO CALL RUNNING PLAYS? And won't call them on 2nd or 3rd down unless the distance is under 4 yards? Oh right our running game has been terrible.. Unlike Fitz's 300 yard games I guess.. Let's face facts, this team is a fuckin' trainwreck right now, top to bottom, and it's going to take a helluva lot more than a couple of rookies to change it. There needs to be a fundamental change in attitude and philosophy. Without a balanced offense next year is just going to be more of the same, no matter who we draft. Sorry to piss on the draft parade.

I am still holding faint hopes that we can both trade down AND get a franchise LT. I think Levi is done.

I know we had a shift in philosophy along the line in regards to running but man, we were terrible across the board even in the preseason. I have a hard time believing its all because Bluto sucked. I think Andrews filled in admirably in 07, but I think he's been part of the problem this year too. I have been disappointed in B. Williams, but you disagree. We both agree Whit is good. You said Jones can be good if he's healthy...then why is our OL the worst in the league? Andrews has to suck. I see RT as a spot that needs to be upgraded as much as C. And you gotta be talking about Ray Lewis when you say there is only one LB in consideration right? What gives you that impression?

I would be cool with our first 3 picks being offensive linemen. I would be happy with linebacker and 2 offensive linemen in the first 3 rounds. We have one of the best qb's in the game. Several good wr's. We need to protect Carson and give him time to throw, plus we won't have a good passing game until teams respect our running game. Players get hurt every year and you need dept, plus Bobbie as much as I like him isn't getting any younger. Stacy and Levi haven't played great this season. Draft offensive linemen and front 7 on defense. Our offensive line has gotten zero push all season and gotten beat on the pass rush on a regular basis, we need to draft o-line for now and the future.

We are going nowhere with one of the worst running games in the NFL. I think our D would look a lot better if it wasn't constantly on the field and if it occasionally could play with the lead. I'd love to get a veteran C in FA and draft a stud LT at the top of the first round. I don't think Benson/Perry is the answer at RB and I'd love to get a younger guy in the middle rounds. Between Odom, Sims, Peko and Geathers we are ok at D line. We definitely could use another LB. Rivers obviously should be good and I think Dhani is servicable. No need to take any DBs early. Assuming no trades, I'd take an LT in the first, a LB in the 2nd and a RB in the 3rd. I'd be fine with a Center early also if we can't sign a veteran.

Jason Posted December 7, 2008 Report Posted December 7, 2008 Based on AC playing well the rest of the way, Orakpo in 1, Loadholt in 2, best available center in 3.

We can't run the ball because we can't block. Bring in all the offensive lineman we can. There's a reason why the defense gives up so many points - they're on the field after three offensive plays - everytime. Is there a way that we could find the statistics on how many offensive posessions teams get against us compared to other teams? That would be interesting.
Bgal Posted December 7, 2008 Report Posted December 7, 2008 We need a good FA center and a tackle in the first round. The offensive line should always be the most pressing need when you have a QB like Palmer. Hopefully next season he won't get hit every damn play.
