Speaking of Skuta.....

Small-School Linebacker Drawing Attention
Posted by Aaron Wilson on March 29, 2009, 3:55 p.m. EDT
Grand Valley State draft prospect Dan Skuta worked out for 17 NFL teams at his Pro Day, auditioning as a linebacker, fullback and tailback.

According to Gil Brandt of NFL.com, the Cincinnati Bengals were one of the teams on hand to watch Skuta.

Skuta registered a 4.72 in the 40-yard dash, also turning in a 35-inch vertical leap and a 9-9 broad jump. Plus, he bench pressed 225 pounds 20 times.

Skuta is hoping to become the latest Grand Valley draft pick.

It’s a list that includes wide receiver David Kircus (Detroit Lions, 2003), defensive tackle Keyonta Marshall (Philadelphia Eagles, 2005) and cornerback Brandon Carr (2008, Kansas City Chiefs).

Interesting...smokescreen?
Jared Cook Aims High
Posted by Mike Florio on March 30, 2009, 9:06 p.m.

Though it’s a foregone conclusion that Brandon Pettigrew of Oklahoma State will be the first tight end whose name is called on draft day, South Carolina’s Jared Cook is hoping to cement himself as No. 2.

According to Omar Kelly of the South Florida Sun-Sentinel, Cook has already had private workouts with the Dolphins, Rams, and Saints. On Tuesday, Cook will work out for the Browns. On Wednesday, it’ll be the Jags.

Next week, he travels to Atlanta.

During his Pro Day workout, Cook was worked out by tight end coaches from the Eagles, Bengals, and Steelers.

Cook raised eyebrows at the Scouting Combine, running the 40-yard dash in 4.5 seconds and jumping 41 inches vertically, 123 inches broadly.

Then again, Vernon Davis raised eyebrows, too.

Former University of Cincinnati linebacker Ryan Manalac will be working out for the Cincinnati Bengals on April 14th. Originally projected as an undrafted free agent, the Pickerington, Ohio native now has a chance to sneak into the latter frames of the 2009 draft after a very strong Pro Day showing on March 19th. Manalac (5' 11", 237), who led Cincinnati with 82 tackles last season, ran the 40 yard dash in 4.65 & 4.68 seconds, displayed a 36.5" vertical leap, 10' 4" broad jump and completed the short shuttle in just 4.26 seconds. He also did 28 bench press reps, at 225 pounds, for N.F.L. scouts.
Johnny Knox might be the fastest guy in the draft. Played at a low level of competition (JC and then Abilene Christian), but might fit as a return guy and a slot guy. Has pretty good size, actually. Another WR to take a shot at later on who can really run is Mike Wallace of Ole Miss.

Michael Johnson, ex-Olympian, now has a company that trains athletes, and one area they specialize in is getting guys ready for the NFL.... and he said of all of the athletes he has had, Mike Wallace is the one he thought could have been a world-class track athlete. He's pretty green as a FB player, but he's got really good size, and he can run. Really came on as a junior and senior.

looks like we are definately targeting one of our picks to be on a FB. That makes at least 3 reported FB's we're bringing in of the 30 players we're allowed to bring in.
Cal Fullback On The Move
Posted by Aaron Wilson on April 10, 2009, 12:36 p.m.
Cal fullback Will Ta’ufo’ou has been scheduled for visits with the Arizona Cardinals, Minnesota Vikings, Cincinnati Bengals and the Jacksonville Jaguars, according to a league source.

Ta’ufo’ou, who wasn’t invited to the NFL Scouting Combine, is a 5′11,” 253-pound bruising blocker rated as one of the top fullbacks available in the NFL draft.

Ta’ufo’ou never fumbled in four seasons and wasn’t tackled for a loss.

“Will is vital to our offense” Cal coach Jeff Tedford said during an interview with the school’s official athletic Web site. “The fullback plays such a big part in our run game. And Will combines intelligence and instinct for the game with his very physical play.”

Added running backs coach Ron Gould: “Will is the toughest player I have ever coached.”

Ta’ufo’ou was a standout high school running back who developed into a fullback at the collegiate level, where he blocked for Marshawn Lynch and J.J. Arrington.

“I have really come to appreciate blocking,” said Ta’ufo’ou, who graduated from Cal with honors. ”The feeling of getting a good clean block, pancake them or pop their helmet off, whatever, a big hit, something that’s going to change the play.”
NFL Draft Q&A: OT Gerald Codogan
By Ed Thompson
Scout.com Senior NFL Analyst
Posted Apr 10, 2009

He's a Dean's List student. He assists those in need off the field in many different ways. He's a talented musician and singer. He's Penn State offensive tackle Gerald Cadogan, who's going to be drafted by an NFL team at the end of the month. Learn more about him in the exclusive Scout.com Q&A feature.

For the past two seasons, the left tackle position at Penn State has been manned very capably and somewhat quietly by Gerald Cadogan, the man who took over the key position in the Nittany Lions' offense after Levi Brown was selected in the first round of the 2007 NFL Draft by the Arizona Cardinals.

A humble and hard-working player, Cadogan became a highly-respected member of the Penn State community not only for how well he played football, but for what he did off the field as well.

A Dean's List student, Cadogan balanced his very full life with a passion for music, his personal faith and community service. The Special Olympics and the Make-A-Wish Foundation are just two of the many organizations he supported off the field while also serving on the school's Student-Athlete Advisory Board.

The 6-foot-5, 309-pound lineman has plenty of game experience at both the tackle and guard position, and he's both athletic and intelligent enough to play either position successfully at the next level. The Oakland, California native has drawn interest from a number of NFL teams, including the Cincinnati Bengals, Tennessee Titans, New York Giants, Philadelphia Eagles and the Kansas City Chiefs.

regarding Cedric Peerman:
Peerman was one of those prospects who responded well to Bengals running backs coach Jim Anderson during the week of practice at the Senior Bowl. The way I hear it, the Bengals coaching staff was quite smitten with the runner in Mobile.

“Coach Anderson helped me with my footwork and gave me pointers of things to work on while in Mobile,” Peerman said in a recent phone interview. “What he told me has really helped me out thus far. Coach was very good to talk to because he was so real. He was so truthful and wasn’t going to sugarcoat anything. I just enjoyed being around him and that whole experience.”

History has shown not all productive players in the draft come from BCS schools. Ravens quarterback Joe Flacco (Delaware) and Cardinals cornerback Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie (Tennessee State) are just two small school players who made big impacts last year. So who are the top small school sleepers in this year's draft? Here are a dozen names to remember.

• Walter Mendenhall/RB/Illinois State: Younger brother to Pittsburgh Steelers running back Rashad Mendenhall, the Illinois State product is just as big and strong carrying the ball. His game film is outstanding as Walter shows power on the inside, speed in the open field and the ability to slip tackles then create yardage. The Cincinnati Bengals have shown a lot of interest in Walter; they brought him into their facility for an official visit.
