Jason
1990 - Braves lost over 90 games. 2008 - Reds lost close to 90 games. 1991 Braves - went to Word Series 2009 Reds - ???? 1990 -1991 Braves lost an aging Dale Murphy, replaced with a young David Justice (who played 1B in 1990). 2008 - 2009 Reds replaced an aging Griffey Junior with Jay Bruce 1990 - 1991 Braves had few other significant changes But in 1991 the young Braves, particularly Justice, Steve Avery, and Tom Glavine grew up. 2008 - 2009 Reds - will Bruce, Cueto, and Owings/Bailey "grow up"? 1990 - 1991 Braves Charlie Liebrandt, one of the few veteran pitchers bounced back from winning 9 games to winning 15. 2008 - 2009, can Harang make a similar bounce back? Link to 1990 Braves roster and stats: http://www.baseball-reference.com/teams/ATL/1990.shtml Link to 1991 Braves roster and stats: http://www.baseball-reference.com/teams/ATL/1991.shtml Can it happen again a few hundred miles north and a few years later? |Bunghole|
I never thought of that comparison, but yes it can. The pitching HAS to pan out like we hope, though, and we'll need to generate some runs, but I like our projected roster so far and can't wait for opening day. At the bare minimum, it will be fun watching this young group of players grow together, even if they miss out on the playoffs this season, although I think there's an outside shot that we can topple Chicago for the division this year. ChicagoBengal
Great post Jason. Food for thought for sure, although I contend that any team with David Weathers on the roster isn't allowed by the rules of nature to participate in the post-season. ccartman2
I hope they do well. I used to love Baseball before MLB fucked it up. I hate it that teams like the Marlins can buy championships and the Yankess always contend cuase they can afford to it. With a salary cap and a couple of rule changes to shorten the game, Baseball could return to be the greatest game in the US. If not, Football will always kick their ass. And if most Americans weren't so damn stupid, Hockey would pass them as well.
