July 13 (Bloomberg) -- DirecTV Group Inc., the largest U.S. satellite television service, will allow its “NFL Sunday Ticket” subscribers to watch next season’s games on mobile phones as part of a $100 package.

Fans who pay $280 for National Football League games outside their home TV market can add access on handsets including Apple Inc.’s iPhone, El Segundo, California-based DirecTV said today on its Web site. The offer ends July 31.

The move comes as broadcasters and pay-TV operators look for ways to make money as viewers shift online. A Wi-fi link or access to a so-called 3G high-speed wireless Internet service is required, DirecTV said. Software will be provided on Apple’s iPhone AppStore by September, the company said.

“While watching NFL games on a cell phone is certainly a niche product given its cost, it illustrates how DirecTV continues to push technology to cement its brand identity,” Richard Greenfield, an analyst at Pali Capital LLC in New York, wrote today in a note.

The $100 package also provides computer access and additional TV features. They include the ability to watch eight games on a single screen, as many as 12 in high definition, a channel that shows scoring drives and another that condenses games down to 30 minutes.

DirecTV rose 19 cents to $23.66 at 4 p.m. New York time in Nasdaq Stock Market trading. The shares have gained 3.3 percent this year. Apple, based in Cupertino, California, added $3.82 to $142.34.

In March, the satellite TV company, controlled by billionaire John Malone’s Liberty Media Corp., extended an agreement with the NFL to keep the league’s “Sunday Ticket” package of games through 2014. DirecTV will pay $1 billion a year starting in 2011, a 43 percent increase over the cost of the previous deal with the NFL.[/quote]
