GEORGETOWN, Ky. -- The Cincinnati Bengals began their 2009 training camp Friday without first-round draft choice Andre Smith as he remained in contract negotiations with the team.

Smith's no-show and inability to reach a deal before the team's opening practice was expected.

The No. 6 overall pick was indecisive in settling on an agent after the NFL draft, and combined with Cincinnati's poor reputation in negotiations, many anticipated a drawn-out process in getting Smith into training camp.

The Bengals are counting on Smith to be the starting right tackle in Week 1, which is why reaching an agreement soon is crucial for the team.

Quarterback Carson Palmer is coming off a season-ending elbow injury in 2008, and protecting him will be key to Cincinnati's success this season.

Smith, out of Alabama, remained the only unsigned draft pick in the AFC North division.

Second-year player Anthony Collins will work with the first team for the Bengals at right tackle in Smith's absence.

This kid needs to get it done - and get in the game.....

Not to worry--he'll be signed by the third preseason game and will be starting by the third regular season game.

He better be signed within the time the first pre-season game starts or he'll be lucky to see the field this season. For Carson's sake he better not if he misses that much time.

If there's a silver lining in all of this, it's that the Smith story isn't dominating the sports pages. I would be miserable if there was contract posturing by the Bengals and Smith's agent through the media.... *knocks on wood*

It is discouraging that nothing is being said at all about Andre.....complete silence.

I'm surprise by the silence. Very few rumors, little discussion, nothing really to get encouraged or discouraged about. I'm not sure it's a good thing or a bad thing necessarily, but overall surprised at silence.

lololol.. yea he wont know how to block at all if not..

if he gets a preseason game and a week or twos practice in.. he will start the season i would imagine... maybe hold him out one game to prove a point.. but seems hasty..

best palyer plays.. and it doesnt take decades to learn how to block..

Biggs: Nine first rounders still unsigned
Long holdouts may make it tough to catch up.

Conventional wisdom has it that the closer a player lines up to the ball, the more quickly he can be ready to play, but offensive tackles like Cincinnati's Andre Smith and Jacksonville's Eugene Monroe are missing valuable time when it comes to preparing for Sept. 13. A player like Denver running back Knowshon Moreno could probably come in and get up to speed quickly, provided he has an understanding of the pass protection schemes and blitz responsibilities. It's going to be easier for a cornerback like New Orleans' Malcolm Jenkins to be prepared than it would be for a safety, but protracted holdouts make it difficult for any draft pick to play catch up.

Here's a look at the unsigned draft picks, the order they went in the first round, their agents and the full squad opening camp dates for their respective teams:

3. DE Tyson Jackson, Kansas City, Eugene Parker, July 31
4. LB Aaron Curry, Seattle, Mike Sullivan/Andy Ross, July 31
6. OT Andre Smith, Cincinnati, Alvin Keels, July 30
8. OT Eugene Monroe, Jacksonville, Sanat Shah, Aug. 2
9. DT B.J. Raji, Green Bay, David Dunn/Mark Humenik, July 31
10. WR Michael Crabtree, San Francisco, Eugene Parker, July 30
11. DE Aaron Maybin, Buffalo, Joel Segal/Chafie Fields, July 25
12. RB Knowshon Moreno, Denver, Tom Condon/Ben Dogra, July 30
14. CB Malcolm Jenkins, New Orleans, Ben Dogra/Tom Condon, July 30
