Carson Palmer (ankle) remains questionable for Thursday's game against St. Louis while Shayne Graham (groin) is probably out for the remainder of the preseason. We should know more on Palmer after he hits the practice field later this afternoon.

"I'm taking it one rehab session at a time, and we'll see where we're at," Palmer said. "Every day, it's improved. It's gotten better and better every day and hopefully, it will continue to do that. Walking is fine. Running and moving and avoiding people is different. Right now, I can walk great."

Marvin Lewis did say that chances are they will sign a kicker this week.

As for Graham, he missed two weeks last year due to a groin injury, so it would be safe to see another kicker coming in for the last two weeks.

"I'm just going to do everything I can do to make sure that I'm healthy when the time comes. I'm just going to do what I do and when it feels good I'll go," Graham said. "I've had injuries like that in the preseason before and I've had some of my best years after that. I'm not worried about it, I'll come back strong and rehab it. I would say so but take it a day at a time."

Crap, this sucks. Got some tickets to the game from amishbengal and was really hoping to see the first team offense out there. Hard to get excited for JT O'Sullivan.

Preseason sucks. Palmer would be out there if the game meant something. Knock it down to two games and add two to the season. Please!

im not worried until he doesnt play against the broncos or something..

his passes were good, not perfect, but good, we are fine as HE is..

all that i have read on high ankle sprains gives a few weeks to 3 months recovery time...

so no HUGE worries.. he needs to stay upright when he is palying tho..

Palmer might sit vs. Rams
By Joe Reedy • jreedy@enquirer.com • August 22, 2009

Carson Palmer was walking better Saturday, but his status for Thursday's third preseason game, against St. Louis, remains questionable.

Palmer, who has a sprained left ankle, did not practice on the field Saturday, instead doing rehab work inside Paul Brown Stadium. If you read between the lines on some of his comments, it sounds very much as though he will not see action against the Rams.

"It's important to play and practice as much as possible. But at the same time, you need to be smart and make sure you're setting yourself up to be as healthy as possible for the opener and not have a season-long issue," Palmer said. "I'd love to be able to play and practice and do everything I can. But I have to follow the instructions."

The third preseason game is known as the team's dress rehearsal for the regular season, as the starters play the whole first half and a possession or two of the third quarter. Ideally, all the starters would play in this one, then work only a series or two Sept. 3 against Indianapolis.

But for Palmer, the primary concern is being ready to go when the regular season begins Sept. 13 at Paul Brown Stadium against Denver.

"I'm taking it one rehab session at a time, and we'll see where we're at," Palmer said. "Every day, it's improved. It's gotten better and better every day, and hopefully it will continue to do that. Walking is fine, but running and moving and avoiding people is different. Right now, I can walk great.

"We still have a couple days and we still need to be smart. It's still in the preseason and we have 3½ weeks until we open up. I'm going to continue to do what they tell me to do and rehab it, and they'll tell me the final decision – whether I'm up or down. I'm trying to get as healthy as possible and be prepared for the opener. Hopefully, I can play before that."

In other words, instead of Marc Bulger vs. Carson Palmer, it could be Kyle Boller vs. J.T. O'Sullivan on Thursday. Bulger, the Rams' starter, is out for one more week with a broken pinkie.

The encouraging note so far for the Bengals is that, through two preseason games, whoever has run the first-team offense has moved the ball. The discouraging thing is that those nine series have produced no points.

The first-team unit has gained 290 yards and is averaging 6.4 yards per play. Three of the drives have ended in turnovers, one stalled by way of penalty, another resulted in a missed field goal, and one ended when the Bengals could not convert on fourth down. (Had Shayne Graham been healthy, the Bengals would have attempted a field goal on that drive.)

"We are moving the ball, and that's the best positive. We can control the other things," coach Marvin Lewis said. "We can eliminate penalties and giving the ball to the other club, just because our guys are better than that. We've made more explosive plays in these first two games than we had the entire last season."

Said running back Cedric Benson of the mistakes: "We just have to continue sticking with the game plan and continue to execute. Correct where we made a mistake and move on. It's good for it to happen now and have an idea of who the refs are calling now."

Another positive has been the play of O'Sullivan. In two games, the seventh-year player has completed 19 of 24 passes for 241 yards and two touchdowns (both to Chris Henry) with a quarterback rating of 136.3.

"Any time you get reps or snaps, it's an opportunity that I don't take for granted," O'Sullivan said. "These guys are calling great plays, the line is giving me an opportunity to get the ball out of my hands and the guys are making plays. The receivers are talented and exciting. They're making plays every week. It's a deep pool and a huge asset."

TICKET WINDOW: Whereas the Bengals still have not sold out their opener, the Browns averted their first local TV blackout since 1995 when the team and its local TV affiliate shared the expense of buying about 4,500 tickets for the first home preseason game, against Detroit Saturday night.

In what cannot be a good sign for football in Jacksonville, all the Jaguars' home games are expected to be blacked out.

SMITH OUTPACED: Former UC standout DeAngelo Smith had better hope this video never hits YouTube. He lost a 50-yard foot race to a kicker.

"He says I really don't do anything during practice," said rookie kicker David Buehler, who is Smith's training-camp locker neighbor.

Buehler bolted ahead in the race and never looked back.

Smith accepted defeat.

"He beat me fair and square, man. I got no excuse," Smith said. "There's going to be a rematch, though. I'm a DB (defensive back), man, so I've got to back up my end."

Smith can take solace. Buehler is not your typical kicker. At the NFL Combine, he ran a 4.57-second 40-yard dash and bench-pressed 225 pounds 25 times, outperforming some offensive linemen and linebackers, including some of his former Southern Cal teammates.

i just got done watching highlights of almost every game on nfl.com and i'll tell you what, most teams are putting points on board. remember that was our problem last year, and so far we scored one TD in each of our games in preseason! also most of the other teams QB's are playing well, and staying till half time and all what we've seen of Carson is 7 or 10 plays max. i don't care what anyone thinks, but if he doesn't play the next two games and shows some promise of old Carson, then we got a major fucking problem again this year. JTO can look great, but he's still learning the play book. i hope he can answer but we all know what happens when Carson is watching the game from the sideline. i might be freaking out a little, but damn it i feel like i want to win now  :(

Last year our line was swiss cheese, our RBs were absent, our WR was hurt, and Carson was out.
So far, things are not even close to that.

You need to lie down - but not inside! The roof of your house might cave in on you!! But watch it outside -- theres lightining that could get you.

no, the problem last year was that we couldn't even move the ball, had no RB worth its salt, chad wasn't healthy, and so on. Even then, by game 3 they were putting up 20+ points with Carson. This year's offense is much farther ahead than last years.

Palmer doesn't practice Sunday
Bengals notebook
By Joe Reedy • jreedy@enquirer.com • August 23, 2009

Carson Palmer did not practice with the team Sunday. He did some light tossing on a side field and gingerly dropped back to pass a couple of times before going back into Paul Brown Stadium for rehab work.

Palmer has not practiced since he sprained his left ankle during the first quarter of an Aug. 14 17-7 loss to the Saints.

Although Palmer said Saturday there was a chance he might play, it is looking likely that he will miss Thursday’s game against St. Louis at Paul Brown Stadium.

The team will have single practice today and Tuesday before Wednesday’s off day.

“If last week had been a regular-season game, he probably would have played. But we are going to continue to be cautious, because it is just preseason,” coach Marvin Lewis said. “We’d like him to get some more time with our first unit, and I think we will do that before the preseason is over. But the most important thing is to have him 100 percent for Denver.”

SITTING OUT: Another player who might not play the rest of the preseason is defensive end Antwan Odom due to a bruised Achilles.

Odom has assisted on two tackles during the preseason but has had a couple of quarterback pressures.

“My goal this year was not to miss a practice, not to miss any time and unfortunately I had this Achilles step up. I just stretched it a little,” said Odom, who missed eight games last season.

Also not practicing on Sunday were LB Rashad Jeanty (leg) and C Jonathan Luigs.

KICKER SIGNED: With Shayne Graham still hampered by a groin injury, the Bengals signed rookie Sam Swank.

Swank, who played at Wake Forest, holds the school records for points (337) and field goals (71). He was signed by Philadelphia after the draft but was released on May 27.

SECOND OPINION: Although the Bengals held New England to two field goals, defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer was not happy with how his unit played.

“We were sloppy. We played hard, but we were not as sharp as we were in New Orleans,” Zimmer said. “We did not tackle well. They had us off balance. We were not expecting no huddle and four wides.”

The Patriots used no-huddle and four-wide receiver sets on their first two series.

On the first drive, New England went 57 yards in 10 plays, culminating in a field goal. On the next drive the Patriots went three-and-out.

“We hadn’t seen it that much but it was good. We adjusted good but could’ve tackled better,” Zimmer said. “We rushed the quarterback better but they (the Patriots line) screwed up on a couple assignments too. It’s not as if we’re the ’85 Bears.”

TICKET WINDOW: For the first time since 2005 fans will not to be able to watch a Bengals game live on TV.

Thursday’s game is not anticipated to sell out by 7:30 p.m. today, meaning it would be blacked out in Cincinnati and Dayton. Since Columbus and Louisville fall out of the 75-mile radius, the game would air live there.

The game will be shown on tape delay at 11:35 p.m. on Channel 12.

The last time a game did not air live was the 2005 preseason finale against Indianapolis.

Carson Palmer did not practice and did rehab work inside Paul Brown Stadium, meaning his chances of playing Thursday against St. Louis doubtful.

"I'm trying to keep my arm in shape basically. I'll take it day by day," Palmer said. "I'm not going to be able to practice today. It looks slim but I'll keep rehabbing, see how it feels and if it keeps improving see where we're at Thursday."

"I feel comfortable but obviously would like to play. The best thing for me and the team is to play as much as possible. We'd like to have all 22 starters out there and play significant playing time but that's not the reality of the situation, that's not the reality of my situation. The main goal and focus is Denver here. I have an ample amount of time to get ready for that one. I'm not sure where we're at this week and next week on that."

When asked if he could've played during the regular season, Palmer said: "Oh yeah. We're being cautious with where we're at. I've had great work during training camp but the training staff has decided its best to have me ready for the opener. I would like to play in every game, I would like to play three quarters in every game. Nobody does that and obviously haven't been able to do that. The more work you get the more comfortable you get."

Marvin Lewis said that Pernell Phillips (groin), Matt Sherry (shoulder), Antwan Odom (Achilles), Antonio Chatman (ankle), David Jones (foot), Ben Utecht (concussion), Shayne Graham (groin) and more than likely Palmer would not play.

should the same rule apply for Carson ? you don't practice you don't play ?

Where did this come from?

Carson is being held out of practice because the training staff
wants to be extra cautious. And worrying more about the Opener.

But what I just posted said all that.

i was pretty clear. if Carson doesn't practice before the opener would you want him on the field against the Broncos ? hey i want us to win as much as you, just saying if JTO does good and stays healthy, why not let carson come back by week 2 or 3 instead! from what i keep hearing, you don't come back from a High ankle sprain in 3 weeks!

Carson hurt his ankle on August 14th. You are saying he shouldn't play until week 2 (Sept. 20th) or week 3 (Sept. 27th).

It's a minor ankle injury. Why do you think it would take him 6 or 7 weeks to come back from it?

That doesn't make any sense to me.
What is a "high ankle sprain?
A high a sprain is used to describe a particular type of ankle injury. Normally, when someone sprains their ankle, the ligaments that surround the ankle joint are stretched or torn. This injury causes pain and swelling around the ankle, and can be quite uncomfortable.

A high ankle sprain injures the large ligament above the ankle that joins together the two bones of the lower leg. These two bones, the tibia (shin bone) and fibula, run from the knee down to the ankle. They are joined together by this ligament called the "syndesmosis" or "sydesmotic ligament."

Patients who sustain a high ankle sprain injure this syndesmotic ligament. The ligament can also be an associated injury with more common low ankle sprains, and even ankle fractures.

What are the symptoms of a high ankle sprain?
A high ankle sprain causes symptoms similar to other ankle sprains, but patients often complain of pain when the ankle is externally rotated (turned to the outside) or when the calf is squeezed. This later finding, the so-called "squeeze test," is the classic test for syndesmotic injuries, but it is not very reliable for diagnosis.

What is the treatment for a high ankle sprain?
Syndesmotic injuries tend not to heal as well as more common ankle sprain, that is why trainers and coaches of athletes are often concerned about "high ankle sprains." Your orthopedic doctor will first determine if the injury is stable or unstable. If the injury is stable, then the high ankle sprain can be treated in a cast, usually for a period of 6 weeks.

If the injury is unstable, then a "syndesmotic screw" can be placed between the tibia and fibula to hold the bones in proper position while the syndesmotic ligament heals. The are several methods of fixation of syndesmotic injuries, all with potential risks and benefits. It is a relatively safe and well-tolerated surgical procedure.

Patients will have the screw in place for about 3 months while the syndesmotic ligament heals. Patients should understand that if they walk on the leg while the syndesmotic screw is in their leg (even after the ligament has healed) the screw can break. The reason for this is that there is normally some motion between these bones when people walk. Therefore, some doctors prefer a second operation to remove the sydensmotic screw before allowing the patient to walk. Other doctors will leave the screw in and allow it to possibly break. The reason being that there are few reported problems with the broken screw. Either way, you can talk with your doctor about this if you need to have surgery for a high ankle sprain.
standard recovery time for a high ankle sprain is 2-3 months.

certainly different for a pro athlete.. but he wont be 100% for game 1 no matter what.. close.. sure.. but not there.. close enough to play? for damn sure..

id like to see him step into the game for preseason game 4 tho.. do a series or two.. run, run, drop back pass, if the drive continues, let that be it.. if it ends there.. let him do another....

you almost have to..

if you wanna sell that game out anyway..
