Bengals preseason observations

August 27, 2009 10:30 PM

Posted by ESPN.com's James Walker

The Cincinnati Bengals lost to the St. Louis Rams, 24-21, in their third preseason game Thursday night.

Here are some observations:

I was surprised Cincinnati's first-team defense gave up two first-quarter touchdowns against an offense that's expected to be average at best in St. Louis. The first was an 11-play, 71-yard drive capped by a 16-yard run by Samkon Gado. St. Louis had a short field on second scoring drive. But Cincinnati failed to hold the Rams to a field goal, which is what elite defenses do. If the Bengals want to be a top 10 defense this year, which is their goal, they are going to have to handle both of these situations better in the regular season.

Bengals receiver Chris Henry continued his impressive preseason. Henry scored for the third straight preseason game after quarterback Jordan Palmer connected with Henry for a 54-yard touchdown in the fourth quarter. Henry had the best offseason of his career and is poised to help the Bengals this year as the No. 3 receiver.

Rookie linebacker Rey Maualuga is making a strong push for a starting job. After missing the preseason opener, he's been a stud the past two weeks. Against St. Louis he led the Bengals with eight tackles. Maualuga has already established himself as a feared hitter in training camp, and he fits right in with the AFC North division.

Former Baltimore Ravens quarterback Kyle Boller did well Thursday night. He got the start for St. Louis and finished 14 for 20 for 96 yards and a touchdown. He threw a lot of safe passes but executed pretty well. Boller also rushed twice for 16 yards.

Rookie receiver Quan Cosby made his first big play of the preseason with a 49-yard punt return for a touchdown in the first quarter. Cosby is on the bubble in a deep receiver corps of the Bengals. Stellar special teams play is probably the only way he avoids the practice squad.
As far as preseason games go it was typical. I was disappointed because after the 3 and out, punt return, I was hoping they would put in a A+ performance. Turnovers killed, there was pressure, and of course more penalties.

Cedric Benson looks great, IMO. I say Defense had one bad series the whole night, I think 17 points came off easy field position. I think the defense is close to causing a bunch of TOs, ball hasn't been dropping their way.

Benard Scott had a great 21 yard carry, very impressive. In the end, I was hoping they'd put it together but it was kinda Blah. Not horrible, Not were in trouble feeling but just wanting to see consistency.

Oh, Rams were getting the ball out quickly and still getting Qbs hit, so I think defense pressure is getting better.

Cant wait for the next episode of hard knocks, Asses are going to be chewed out across the board. Keith Rivers is playing with attitude week 3, he is going to explode on Pittsburgh. It preseason it don't mean a thing and to me the poor play came from scrubs who wont sniff real playing time.

The stream is behind...Gus Parrish got owned and the guy sacked and forced a fumble from JP.
JP held the ball WAY too long.
3 of the 4 turnovers were due to players that hopefully will never see the field in the regular season. the other one (fumble by bernard scott) was hopefully just a rookie mistake.
that fumble was 100% bullshit. one of the guys was grabbing scotts facemask and face and pulling while another guy ran in and grabbed the ball. how the fuck there wasnt a 15 yard face mask penalty was complete bullshit.

Gus Parrish still got owned...

I didnt see the facemask but I wouldnt be surprised if there was one. Either way, those 4 turnovers were hopefully plays that dont happen in the regular season. Obviously we are gonna have some turnovers, but I dont think the turnovers this game are gonna be indicative of what is gonna happen in the regular season.

Time shift guide: Bengals-Rams
By C. Trent Rosecrans, CNATI.com Posted August 27, 2009 7:33 PM ET

OK, so this game is blacked out, so you'll either be watching the 11:30 replay or your DVR. I'll try to help you out with the highlights. I'll just use our time -- if you're watching live on tape delay, keep in mind it's four hours ahead.

7:36 -- Sam Swank -- five yards deeper on the kickoff than Chad.. And after the penalty, this is huge for the Bengals.

7:39 -- Quan Cosby on the return for TD

7:51 -- the run defense seems tired, and Samkon Gado runs for a touchdown. There appears to be something on fire outside the stadium on Mehring Way.

7:57 -- we're told it's a car fire. No announcement in the stadium for "the driver of an ash-gray Chevy Nova, your car is on fire" -- yet.

7:59 -- sack on first down, fumble on second. NOt a good start for J.T. O'Sullivan.

8 -- Boller runs, Rivers knocks his helmet off.

8:02 -- Another score. You may want to stop now. Rams 14, Bengals 7, 4:51 left in the first.

8:12 -- Huber can punt. Saw a person in the stands with a Huber jersey -- could be the first-ever jersey sold of a rookie punter in NFL history

8:19 -- Nice run by Benson for 2, setting up a 3&1

8:21 -- Bernard Scott picks up a blitz, and O'Sullivan gets it to COles for a 1st

8:22 -- A slip screen to 85 for 9 and then Scott gets the first down, but fumbles, James Butler returns 73 yards for a TD. Rams 21, Bengals 7 10:11 left in 2nd

And we learned it wasn't a car fire, it was a camp fire down by the river that got out of control

8:28 -- A just-miss touchdown but Caldwell and O'Sullivan can't hook up.

8:32 -- A good scramble by O'Sullivan for a first down

8:35 -- J.T. O'Sullivan throws underhanded to Brian Leonard, who runs for 25 yards down to the 12. This is the best play so far

8:37 -- PI on the Rams' Ron Bartell, just holds Chad. Leonard goes in from 1 on the next play. Rams 14, Bengals 0

8:44 -- 3&1 from the Bengals' 40, Pat Sims blows up his man and drops Pittman for a loss of 4

8:47 -- a nice burst from Bernard Scott. That's what he has that the other running backs don't

8:49 -- Leonard hurdles someone. Gain of 3, but still kinda cool

HALFTIME

9:22 -- Two actual punt returns -- 44 yards by Tom Nelson, with a huge stiff arm of the Rams' punter.

9:28 -- Jordan Palmer underthrows Chris Henry, Quincy Butler returns it to the Bengals 22, with Palmer at least getting the tackle.

9:59 -- on 3rd and 21 from the 4, Bernard Scott runs for 22. THen a 20-yard pass from J. Palmer to Foschi and then 54-yard touchdown as Chris Henry burns his man. Rams 24, Bengals 21

10:12 -- Scribes love Mavin. 4&1 from the 26, down 3 -- no playing for the tie. Going for it and, well, stopped. But that means no overtime. And that's most important

10:15 -- A nice stop by Corey Lynch behind the line of scrimmage

10:21 -- Palmer's getting a nice drive before he's sacked and fumbles, turning the ball over, and killing the team's hopes of winning. It's the team's fourth turnover.

10:27 -- and the game is over. Rams 24, Bengals 21

Dont mind him Jason, anything that is said that is not glowing of the Bengals or their players, (even if it isn't negative) brings out his super homer powers.
what does that make your powers then?

as if its far fetched to call OSU homers out on their clear bias...draft time is the worst for it...

there was a LOT of Rey dissing at that point in time.. not necessarily from Jason, but in general.. there was a LOT..

The "rey dissing" you speak of that I saw came from people who were answering a few guys that wanted to take him with the first pick

Detroit was 4-0
Patriots were 0-4

I hope people aren't putting too much stock in preseason. I am a little concerned with our o-line and depth. I hope Carson isn't out of time with the WR once the season starts. He has had issues with that in the past.
definitely. Too much shouldn't be taken from last nite, just like you shouldn't get overly hyped about the first 2 weeks where the starting offense was able to move the ball at will on the Patriots and New Orleans (turnovers not withstanding).

If the OL can get consistent and Carson in sync with the WR's, I think we'll be ok. Denver's not exactly a huge threat and they should be able to knock out a few cobwebs then too.

The main thing is they absolutely HAVE to cut down on the turnovers.

Bengals fall short to Rams
By Carlos "Big C" Holmes | Friday, August 28, 2009, 02:32 AM

CINCINNATI — The Cincinnati Bengals' much anticipated preseason home game against St. Louis was somewhat of a letdown for the 52,312 fans in attendance. Fans were hoping to see the improved Bengals squad featured on the HBO Series 'Hard Knocks' and saw anything but. The team was victimized by turnovers, penalties, sacks, rookie mistakes and missed opportunities resulting in a 24-21 loss to the Rams.

The live game was blacked out on TV locally, but did air at a later time. If you stayed up late watching the replay of the team's lackluster performance, you're probably kicking yourself right about now.

The Bengals got off to a quick start when rookie receiver Quan Cosby returned a punt 49 yards for a touchdown after a three-and-out by St. Louis on the opening drive. It was an uphill battle from that point with St. Louis scoring touchdowns on their next two possessions. The Bengals fought their way back into the game, but never overcame the early deficit.

In the locker room after the game, veteran linebacker Dhani Jones talked about what went wrong out on the field during the loss.

"I think it was timing, securing the football and making the necessary plays when the ball was in our hands," Jones said. "Special teams did a great job in terms of getting us great field position. We have to end up on the better side of the give and the take.

"On defense, we have some guys playing different positions and it's about understanding where each person is going to be. It's a process and something that is going to take time. Sometimes a guy will come in as a rookie or free agent and he won't really understand until the middle of the season, but we have to get on the same page… We have to gain as much knowledge about one another as we possibly can. It's about hunkering down and learning your assignments and making plays."

Henry continues to shine

When it came time to make a play, it was wide receiver Chris Henry who answered the call. He torched cornerback Bradley Fletcher on a 54-yard touchdown reception. The touchdown pass from quarterback Jordan Palmer to Henry came in the fourth quarter to bring the team within three.

Henry played the game with a heavy heart. The receiver's uncle passed away earlier in the day. Henry paid tribute to his uncle by taking a knee and saying a prayer in the back of the endzone after scoring the touchdown. Bengals offensive coordinator Bob Bratkowski was seen in the locker room consoling his young receiver.

Henry has caught a touchdown pass in all three of the Bengals' preseason games. He finished Thursday night's contest with two receptions for 62 yards and a touchdown.

Note: Safety Chinedum Ndukwe injured his shoulder in the third quarter and did not return to the game after being listed as questionable.

Read more about the game later today…

Ken Broo is ugly and an idiot.

The happiest man on the planet today is Bengals holdout lineman, Andre Smith. He heard all he needed to hear Thursday night: Bengals allow six sacks in loss to Rams...

Smith better not get too giddy. He's still dealing with Mike Brown and daughter Katie...

Carson Palmer has all the mobility of a refrigerator. What do you figure his life expectancy is behind this current O-Line? .....

And let's not forget, the Rams aren't going to the Super Bowl this year, unless then buy their tickets in bulk....

Some observations from last night:

- Neither JTO nor little Palmer are CP. As #9 goes, so go the Bengals.
- Beer is now $7.50
- After upgrading our seats in 104 to add a 4th ticket and move a few rows closer to the field, we're now sitting next to a pair of women "in comfortable shoes"... Not that there's anything wrong with that.
- Beer vendor #225 working the 102-104 aisle is "Tim". When he was out of the only stadium beer I wanted, he went back to the staging area to retrieve a fresh cold Bud just for me. He's earned my repeat business this season.
- There's a new 10% discount in the Pro Shop with your AAA card.
- Someone killed Who Dey, I do not know who or what that mascot thing I saw last night was.
- The Ben-Gal with the boyishly-short blonde hair seems to be the best one. Just the right combination of on-field moves, sultriness, and sufficient cute-to-hotness to grab and rivet one's attention (for lack of a better word). I've designated her as my favorite for 2009. You guys will have to get your own, she's mine.
- Ram fans are shy and demure. I think it may have to do with being uncomfortable without a roof over their heads.
- Parking in Covington and taking TANK seems again like the best way to get to the game. $2.50 round trip vs. $20 to park in a garage in Cincy = more money for beer.
