I'm gonna go with....talent?

That's like saying you'd pass on Ray Lewis for Abdul Hodge because Hodge has been in the system longer.
If its about talent there is no way the pats would be cutting him for Alex Smith and Dave Thomas b/c you can not with a straight face tell me those guys have more talent then Ben Watson.

And your analogy comparing Watson with one of the greatest LB's of all time is laughable to say the least.

If Watsons so good why are they cutting him and how much better is he than the guy we kept if he cant make a team over a couple very marginal players. He's probably better than JP, but JP was kept to be nothing more than a blocking TE (I would guess) so how much better is he really

Bengals make final cuts
By C. Trent Rosecrans, CNATI.com Posted September 5, 2009 2:46 PM ET

The "Hard Knocks" storyline that got so much play and fueled much speculation in this last week of Bengals training camp ended up being moot: both Brian Leonard and DeDe Dorsey made the Bengals' 53 man roster.

In the other competition subplot, undrafted rookie Tom Nelson beat out second-year safety Corey Lynch for a spot on the roster.

However, as other teams make their cuts, the 53-man roster could change as soon as Sunday.

"It's the way we put the football team together, it's really not any different than we expected it to go," Bengals head coach Marvin Lewis said. "It's where we are right now, it can change by tomorrow, it can change Monday, it could change Friday, Saturday of next weekend. It will obviously have a change next Monday with Andre having to come off the other list. So there will be another revision very quickly."

First-round pick Andre Smith is currently on a two-week roster exemption that expires on Sept. 14.

"We'll keep working and learning, he spends a lot of time here," Lewis said. "He might as well have a cot here."

The team kept only one fullback, Jeremi Johnson. Johnson was cut during the season in 2008 and brought back for training camp.

"Very pleased with what Jeremi has been able to do, he's been a rededicated person, a new person," Lewis said. "I think his entire life has changed. He's been a different person, and we feel good about that and he feels good about that."

Lewis said cornerback David Jones and Scott Kooistra are the only injuries that should linger into this week.

"Some of the guys got rewarded for how they produced and what they did here," Bengals head coach Marvin Lewis said. "We're not going to start as we go through the regular season pointing toward the Denver Broncos and the regular season. That's how we get last year out of the system, we get off to a good start and do it in front of our fans at home. It's an exciting day and a great day to be a Bengal fan."

The roster:

Offense
Quarterbacks (3): Carson Palmer, J.T. O'Sullivan, Jordan Palmer

Running backs (5): Cedric Benson, Brian Leonard, Bernard Scott, DeDe Dorsey, Jeremi Johnson

Wide receivers (6): Laveranues Coles, Quan Cosby, Chris Henry, Chad Ochocinco, Andre Caldwell, Jerome Simpson

Tight ends (3): Chase Coffman, Daniel Coats, J.P. Foschi

Offensive linemen (9*): Jonathan Luigs, Nate Livings, Bobbie Williams, Kyle Cook, Evan Mathis, Anthony Collins, Dennis Roland, Scott Kooistra, Andrew Whitworth

Defense
Defensive linemen (8): Jonathan Fanene, Pat Sims, Robert Geathers, Frostee Rucker, Michael Johnson, Domata Peko, Antwan Odom, Tank Johnson

Linebackers (6): Abdul Hodge, Rashad Jeanty, Keith Rivers, Dhani Jones, Rey Maualuga, Brandon Johnson

Defensive backs (10): David Jones, Johnathan Joseph, Geoffrey Pope, Morgan Trent, Leon Hall, Roy Williams, Kyries Hebert, Chinedum Ndukwe, Chris Crocker, Tom Nelson

Specialists (3): Kevin Huber, Shayne Graham, Brad St. Louis

* Andre Smith is on a two-week roster exemption

No one questions JJ's ability WHEN he is in shape. The guy can't carry all that extra weight and play at a high level. I think going w/ 1 FB signals that JJ should be ready to handle the load. I sure hope so.
he is in shape and just fine. so why would you bring that up? within 3 days of training camp he was the # 1 FB. he has NEVER been bad in the regular season and would have never been released if he didnt shred his knee.

It's about him being more talented than Foschi, which is undeniable. Foschi was kept by default, and if anything to make it look like we aren't looking for a new TE.

The patriots went with the youth movement, just like we did last year cutting Rudi and Willie.

would have kept white and shirley over Lynch/Hebert and Rucker, but other than that not too surprising. Kinda surprised Foschi made it, but I could see him getting replaced here in the next few days.

IMO Trent was in no danger.
i agree that trent wasnt in danger. there is no way in hell i keep shirley over rucker. when rucker is healthy all he does is make plays. he causes so many fumbles its unreal. shirley is moving to a new position and is EASILY able to be put on the PS and will last there. i would have liked to keep marvin white, but hebert is the best STs player on the team. lynch didnt make the team.
I dont know why anyone would be surprised by the shirley cut.
im not. he can easily be put on the PS.

Pope probably goes once Jones can play again - which will probably coincide with end of Andre's roster exemption...
i could see that. we kept more corners than we need imo and marvin acted like jones would play in week 1.

I'm not so confident Shirley sticks on the PS. As for White vs. Hebert, Hebert gives you absolutely nothing on defense and White could at least be good at both defense and special teams.

We disagree as to Shirley. I think they are very intrigued by what he could do at guard. At least for raw materials, he hasn't looked that bad. PS might get him through till next year where they will have had a complete look.

We totally agree as to White vs Hebert. But, it's not the last word. A lot of things can change over the next week.

let me clarify, I think he'll MAKE the PS (I think he should be on the 53), but I don't think he'll stick without getting claimed by another team.

i love white but he wont be seeing the field at safety unless someone gets hurt. white is a good special teams player, but hebert is the best special teams player and our special teams leader. i think that is why.

i guess why not? heh

I guess we'll agree to disagree on this one. Yea, he was #1 on depth chart quick into camp but his competition wasn't all that stiff. I'm just as excited as the next guy to see him
regain his form but I have my reservations about him, that's all.

So maybe Lippincott lost a pound or 2 today
with all those cuts he had to make.

I hope he doesn't get a lot of face time on Hard Knocks.

Also, it appears the Bengals have cut 5 draft picks from the past 3 drafts.
yea, but with 11 picks this year, at least 3 of them were bound to get cut.

As for lippincott, I'm sure the position coaches and Marvin got in on the action today too. If it's like what I've seen other teams do (on hard knocks), Lippincott will greet them and say "coach so-and-so needs to you see"

IDK, I think he is too raw to stick on the active roster.. He is someone who isn't likely to dress from week to week. There is a chance someone may pluck him, or claim him off waivers, but I think he might make it through this year.

Probably couldn't come to terms on a injury settlement.
And I am pretty sure you can't cut injured players.

When he is healthy, if ever, I look for him to be cut then.

They waived all 3 7th round picks and kept 2 undrafted college free agents.

White and Lynch being cut....some serious depth at Safety.

REALLY surprised that Pope is still on board and kept over White or Lynch. Can't see him on the final roster. Gotta believe (hope) they are gonna pick up someone to replace him.

I think Purify, McDonald, Shirley, Lynch, will be sent to the practice squad. I wouldn't be the least surprised to see Pressley go to the practice squad over Vakapuna, but at least one of them will go there. Looks like Blackstock is PS eligible too. Harrington and Skuta are probably PS bound. Keeping 4 RB probably means James Johnson isn't going to be on the PS, unless there is a trade of a RB in the upcoming days.

that's exactly WHY I do it. 8 players each week aren't dressing. There's no harm in stashing him there. We did it with him for most of last year at DT.

But 2 undrafted Free Agents made the roster.

And it appears 6 draft picks got cut (I said 5).

3 from this year's draft, Marvin White, Shirley and Lynch.
