yea, but with 11 picks this year, at least 3 of them were bound to get cut.

As for lippincott, I'm sure the position coaches and Marvin got in on the action today too. If it's like what I've seen other teams do (on hard knocks), Lippincott will greet them and say "coach so-and-so needs to you see"
i thought on cutdown day the coaches meet with all players.

They waived all 3 7th round picks and kept 2 undrafted college free agents.

White and Lynch being cut....some serious depth at Safety.

REALLY surprised that Pope is still on board and kept over White or Lynch. Can't see him on the final roster. Gotta believe (hope) they are gonna pick up someone to replace him.

I think Purify, McDonald, Shirley, Lynch, will be sent to the practice squad. I wouldn't be the least surprised to see Pressley go to the practice squad over Vakapuna, but at least one of them will go there. Looks like Blackstock is PS eligible too. Harrington and Skuta are probably PS bound. Keeping 4 RB probably means James Johnson isn't going to be on the PS, unless there is a trade of a RB in the upcoming days.
he's not eligible. The "everyone except White" part was only about the guys waived, whereas Blackstock was flat out cut.

But 2 undrafted Free Agents made the roster.

And it appears 6 draft picks got cut (I said 5).

3 from this year's draft, Marvin White, Shirley and Lynch.
that's the way it goes I guess. Roy Williams took White's roster spot, Tank replaced Shirley, a healthy JJ beats out Vakapuna (was jj even on the team draft day?), Nelson flat out beat Lynch, and IMO Cosby should have been picked over Freddie Brown to begin with.

With Jones hurt they had to keep 4 CB's, theres no telling how long he will be out and with GB week two I dont think you can go 3 CB's and Crock against there offense
They have 5 CB's with Pope: Hall, Joseph, Trent, Jones, and Pope. And then there is Crocker and Nelson.

Your making my point for me. If NE doesnt want him anymore why would we pick up a "pass catching" TE to add to our already not so great group of blocking TE's. I dont think it makes any sense to go after him when we are trying to run the ball more and need a TE who is basically another tackle

I hardly call Alex Smith who the Bucs cut and Dave Thomas with his 9 catches last year really good TE's. If they cut him its a money thing, not a talent thing
I'd take Watson over Foshi every day and twice on Sunday.

Oh I know, I was just saying.

Of all the draft picks cut, I hated to see Shirley go the most.
I hope a few of them make it to the PS.

And yes, Jeremi was signed the day before the draft.

If its about talent there is no way the pats would be cutting him for Alex Smith and Dave Thomas b/c you can not with a straight face tell me those guys have more talent then Ben Watson.

And your analogy comparing Watson with one of the greatest LB's of all time is laughable to say the least.

If Watsons so good why are they cutting him and how much better is he than the guy we kept if he cant make a team over a couple very marginal players. He's probably better than JP, but JP was kept to be nothing more than a blocking TE (I would guess) so how much better is he really
So, in your post Ben Watson is NE's best TE.

But, NE's best TE would not be better than J.P. Foschi?

Makes sense.

Very tough cut down today. The only one that jumped out at me was Foshi. If you just look at the top 53 there is no way I see him over several other guys who were cut, including White, Lynch, and Purify. Hopefully he is just a place holder for a waiver wire/UFA pickup, but even though it still doesn't make sense. Keep the top 53 and go from there based on who is available. But other than Foshi, it all makes sense. And in may cases I bet the coaches really had some serious debates...... Alot of whatif going on....

Bengals back it up
Posted Sep 5, 2009
Updated: 4:25 p.m.

For veteran running backs Brian Leonard and DeDe Dorsey, yes. For free-agent rookies Tom Nelson and Quan Cosby, also yes as the Bengals cut a 22-player swath through their roster Saturday to get to the maximum 53.

For veteran safeties Marvin White and Corey Lynch no. And for rookie fullbacks Fui Vakapuna and Chris Pressley, also no.

With the exception of White, all of the players waived Saturday are eligible to be signed to an NFL practice squad if they clear waivers Sunday. The club said it plans to announce Sunday a practice squad of up to eight players.

On Saturday, head coach Marvin Lewis said Cosby is going to return punts in the Sept. 13 opener at Paul Brown Stadium. He also said all players but cornerback David Jones and backup guard-tackle Scott Kooistra are healthy for the Broncos. He indicated Jones, the third corner, has just started to put some weight on his broken foot and won't be back this week but wouldn't give a time frame. He also left open the possibility that Kooistra would be healthy.
Lewis also said that rookie right tackle Andre Smith won't be practicing this week with a broken foot, but he wouldn't give a time frame when he expected him back. He did say Smith is spending enough time at PBS that "he might as well get a cot."

At least for now, the Bengals opted to bed down with four running backs and just one fullback (Jeremi Johnson) while also going with 10 defensive backs in a field that counts Nelson as well as special teams ace Kyries Hebert at safety.

They also terminated the contracts of three veterans not subject to waivers, in linebackers Darryl Blackstock and Jim Maxwell, and defensive tackle Langston Moore, and put wide receiver Antonio Chatman (ankle) on injured reserve.

The Bengals cut 18 players now eligible to be picked up on waivers, among them guard Andrew Crummey after he reached an injury settlement with the team.

The others waived were White, Lynch, Pressley, Vakapuna, guard Jason Shirley, defensive end Chris Harrington, running back James Johnson, tight ends Kolomona Kapanui and Darius Hill, wide receivers Maurice Purify and Freddie Brown, defensive tackles Ventrell Jenkins and Clinton McDonald, cornerback Rico Murray, tackle Augustus Parrish, linebacker Dan Skuta and kicker Sam Swank.

Although he doesn't help them much from scrimmage, Hebert's value on special teams is incalculable after his rookie NFL season in which led the team in teams tackles and got a few Pro Bowl votes. Two young two draft picks, White, a fourth-rounder in 2007, and Lynch, a sixth-rounder in 2008, didn't make enough of an impact on teams to complement what they from scrimmage.

Another move for special teams came as a surprise when they kept both Nelson and Cosby after their competition to return punts. Cosby made it as the fifth wide receiver that is going to dress on Gameday even though, like Hebert, he also doesn't do much from scrimmage.

But Cosby, out of Texas, popped a 49-yard punt return for a touchdown in the third preseason game, the same night Nelson took a punt 44 yards against the Rams. Nelson, out of Illinois State, can do more from the scrimmage on the other side of the ball as a safety and cornerback in the nickel package.

Lewis trashed the theory that Nelson and Cosby wouldn't be on the team together.

"Both guys have done good things on offense and defense, respectively. I don't really consider Tom a punt returner," Lewis said. "Tom has done a good job as a defensive back and he's caught punts as one of the things he's done. Quan has been our punt returner and has been productive with it and I feel good about him going into the season. He'll be the first man up. And Kyries has been very productive as a special teams player and we played games with him in the secondary."

The Bengals took out their entire seventh round Saturday (Vakapuna, McDonald, Brown) for the first time in Lewis' seven years that they've let go three draft picks before the opener. They'd probably like to get all three back on the practice squad.

Vakapuna, out of BYU, and Pressley, a free agent from Wisconsin, fell victim to the numbers crunch in the backfield triggered by the heated competition of Leonard and Dorsey for the No. 3 job behind starter Cedric Benson and rookie Bernard Scott. Incumbent fullback Jeremi Johnson looks to be on the verge of a nice comeback story after spending all last season out of football grappling with injury and conditioning and Lewis is comfortable with him as the lone fullback.

"He's been a re-dedicated person, a different person," Lewis said. "His entire life is changed. We feel real good about that. I know he feels real good about that."

After the impressive preseasons of Leonard and Dorsey the Bengals decided they would get more out of Dorsey from scrimmage and special teams compared to the rookie fullbacks. Plus, Leonard can play fullback in a pinch, as can tight end Dan Coats.

"Brian has some versatility," Lewis said. "He's not taken a snap here at fullback. We didn't bring Brian Leonard in here to be the fullback. It's the way we put the team together. It's really not any different than the way we expected it to go together in some spots. It could change by tomorrow. It could change Monday. It could change, Friday, Saturday."

It will definitely change a week from Monday when Andre Smith uses up his exemption and has to count on the roster. Lewis wouldn't say if that move would come on the offensive line or elsewhere.

Frostee Rucker survived a hip injury and a nice preseason from McDonald to stick on a defensive line that opted to keep eight players instead of nine with Rucker and Jon Fanene able to play both end and tackle.

The moves also marked the near finish of filming for the HBO documentary Hard Knocks. Lewis said it had nothing to do with amping up the competition on the field.

"The cameras don't change what we do. What we do is already videoed," Lewis said. "That doesn't change us. I don't think that changes anything you do on the football field. As you have seen the cameras have not been a big deal to us. It's been a good, positive thing. It hasn't been intrusive at all. I think it's been a real positive and it's almost come to an end. The competition was for job and opportunity and we had that at a lot of different spots."

Asked to rate this year's competition for spots with his previous six seasons, Lewis said, "I don't remember competition last year. I don't go back. I just go forward."

But he did seem relaxed knowing he got his team to the gate relatively healthy.

"We're now pointing to the Denver Broncos and the regular season and that's what this is all about," Lewis said. "That's the way we get last year out of the system while we get off to a good start. We get to do in front of our fans here at home in an exciting day. It will be a great day to be a Bengals fan. It will be very cool."

let me clarify, I think he'll MAKE the PS (I think he should be on the 53), but I don't think he'll stick without getting claimed by another team.

I hope you are wrong and he sticks but that's the gamble you take and I don't understand Foschi over Shirley. I don't get that one at all.

Per James Walker on ESPN:

Bengals: Cutdown analysis

September 5, 2009 5:02 PM

Posted by ESPN.com’s James Walker

Biggest surprise: Although I suggested this strategy as a possible solution earlier this week, I was still surprised to see the Bengals take my advice and cut two fullbacks in order to keep both DeDe Dorsey and Brian Leonard. Cincinnati now has four active tailbacks with Dorsey and Leonard to go along with starter Cedric Benson and Bernard Scott. All four have been solid in the preseason. Jeremi Johnson is the only fullback on the roster as the team cut both Chris Pressley and draft pick Fui Vakapuna. But Leonard is versatile and has the ability to be the backup at both fullback and tailback, which factored into the final decision.

No-brainers: Safety Marvin White had some potential, but coming off a major knee injury he got off to a slow start this year and fell behind a deep group of safeties in Cincinnati. Former 2008 draft pick Corey Lynch certainly wasn’t a no-brainer, but it was pretty clear that rookie free-agent safety Tom Nelson beat him out for one of the last roster spots. Receivers such as Freddie Brown and Maurice Purify never had a chance in Cincinnati, because the Bengals are just too deep at that position.

What’s next: With first-round pick Andre Smith recovering from a broken bone in his foot, the Bengals may scan the wires to see if an intriguing prospect or two surfaces on the offensive line, particular at tackle. Cincinnati also wouldn't mind retaining some of its younger players on the practice squad, such as Vakapuna and Pressley. Otherwise, the Bengals are set at most positions and shouldn’t have a lot of turnover before the start of the regular season.

Obviously DDD was surprised that he was kept . . .(from his twitter)

They decided 2 keep me!! I'm a Bengal!

It seemed pretty clear that since he was playing later in the games than Leonard, if they only kept one it probably would not have been DDD. I'm glad he made it, lets run the ball down their throats all year.
