Reds in '10

I know its a little early to think about 2010 but im bored so what the hell.

Who do you want to see us keep? Get rid of? Starting lineup in 2010? Rotation?

I want to see a lineup of...

1. Drew Stubbs CF
2. SS
3. Joey Votto 1B
4. Bphillips 2B
5. Scott Rolen 3B
6. Jay Bruce RF
7. Johnny Gomes LF
8. Ryan Hanigan C

One of our top priorities should be to find a solid starting SS, one that can play good d and still hit for a decent average. If that cant be done, move phillips to SS and find a 2B. All else fails bring up todd frazier and give him a shot. But SS is definitely our biggest need.

they will suck again next year.

Good analysis.

SS, 3rd base, RF, CF will all be improved next year, hell they have to with those positions all batting in the low .200s. Anyone at SS>unhealthy gonzo/hairston/whoever else played there this year....Rolen in 2010>EE and Rosales in '09. Bruce in 2010 will have to be better then Bruce in 2009, at least with his batting average. Stubbs or pretty much anyone > Willy T in 2009.

2nd and 1st should stay about the same. Catcher probably about the same as well. Votto might not hit .340 like he did the beginning of the year, but his final stats his BA will only be in the low .300s which will probably stay the same next year. Phillips is having his typical year, he wont decline I dont think, might even improve a little. Catcher might stay around the same as it was as a whole this year.

LF who knows? If Gomes gets to play a lot next year maybe he could keep up with his stats that he put up this year. Or it could be worse depending on whos out there.

Either way, position wise I think we almost have to improve in 4 positions, stay the same in 2 or 3. And get worse in 1 maybe 2.

Pitching is another story. But if we go into next year with Harang and Arroyo, there is no reason they wont do as good next year as they have done this year (which is not that good). Arroyo is 12-12 with a 4.3 era. He can easily do that next year. Harang 6-14 with a 4.21 era. His era might stay around the same next year but his Win loss record should improve a little.

So theres 2 pitchers who should be about the same next year, maybe a little better/little worse but its not like they had stellar years.

Cueto has improved since last year, and theres no reason to think he wont continue to improve. He is 9-10 with a 4.5 era this year. He will definitely improve upon those stats next year if he stays healthy. Bailey has also improved a lot through the year. Hes 5-4 with a 5.9 era, but he has pitched a lot better recently. He will be improved next year.

5th starter who knows? But our 5th starter hasnt been great this year so there is no reason that our 5th starter cant do next year what it did this year or improve.

So I dont see any of our starters declining on their full season stats from this year.

Sooo...what makes you guys think we will be worse next year?

Also, there was a 40 game stretch of the season where we went 10-30. During this stretch Rolen missed a lot of games to injury, Bruce out the whole time, Phillips hurt, Hanigan and Hernandez both hurt, Cueto, Volquez, Owings all hurt, CD hurt.

Besides that stretch where we were playing with a bunch of triple A guys we are 9 games over .500 on the season.

Now obviously you just cant take out a chunk of the season that is 25% of the year. But my point remains that this team isnt that bad, they just got really really unlucky. If they didnt have as many injuries I think you are talking about a .500 team right now. You may agree or disagree, but this team still has a lot of talent.

simple reasons why we will suck next year. we dont have money to fill our big holes. we need LF, SS and catcher. we wont have volquez and we need another SP even with volquez. we also need another reliever who can be relied upon all the time. we cant have guys like massett and herrera who do great then just lose it for like a month. burton needs to get his head out of his ass. this team is a 2011 or later team.

No shit! Has Burton pitched a scoreless inning this season? How long did they sign Rhodes for? He's been really solid, except for yesterday.

Two years since Burton pitched a scoreless inning?

lmao no. that was for how long we signed rhodes. burton probably snuck 1 in there this year but last year he was stellar/superstar and this year he has blown total ass.

By the way...2009 Starting lineup

1st Base-Votto-Spent time on DL
2nd Base Phillips-short stint on DL
SS Agonzo-lots of time on DL
3rd Base EE- Lots of time on DL
C-Ramon Hernandez-Lots of time on DL
RF-Jay Bruce-lots of time on DL
CF-Taveras-time on DL
Chris Dickerson-time on DL

LF is really the only position where we havent had a big injury if you dont count CD.

Starting Pitching

Harang-Stint on DL near end of season
Volkie-long time on DL
Cueto-Stint on DL
Owings-Stint or 2? on DL
Arroyo only pitcher to not spend much time on DL

And this team is only 11 games under .500. Obviously not great, but how many small market teams would be with this many injuries?
