Any help? I will really just be using it for family type pictures and sporting events(mainly Bengals games.) Also, is it worth it to get the whole photo printer thing and print off my own pics?

Lay off the photo printer for now. Get into the swing of things and see how much you use the camera before making an investment like that. As for the camera, let's get some details.

What kind of features are you looking for? size? zoom? megapixels? etc...
What's your price range?

For starters, maybe read up on these and see what you like and don't like about each one.

Also, read their buyer's guides on the subject. It's always overwhelming to know what you want when you don't know what's important for you to want.

I kinda lumped you into the undecided category. The prices in the 4 megapixel category have gone down and you get good photo quality and decent options from this range of camera.

i got a kodak DX7590 they run $450 retail but you can get brand new deom dell and ebay and places for about $350 its a 5.0 megapixel with a 10x optical zoom and 3x digital for 30x total zoom, i only use the optical, you can see my pictures from reds games in the reds forum, if your looking to do sporting events, bengals games, optical zoom may be vital

optical zoom: actually zooms in keeping steller quality
digital zoom: enlarges the photo losing quality with every step closer.

anything over 3-4MP will be fine for printing, i doubt your looking to print any posters or anything...

This website here is one of the better ones i've found for good reviews on just about any camera on the market.

http://www.dpreview.com/

I have a small Sony T1, just becuase it fits into a pocket and I can go into events/concerts (places that dont allow camcorders but cameras are ok) and record videos and no one notices since they think i'm just taking pictures. The video quality is great, sony has some of the best quality video from cameras. The zoom does suck, only 3x, but in cameras those size thats all you'll find. Size was my biggest selling point, I wanted a camera that I could fit in my pocket and have with me vs some bulky camera sitting in my room where i'd always forget to take with me. If size wasnt important, personally i'd go with Olympus or Nikon.

Like GB said though if you are looking to do sporting events you will probably want good optical zoom (dont even pay attention to digital zoom) to catch the action on the field.

Does this look like a good deal?

not much optical zoom, good camera for mostly close up or braod pics.. zooming in to a palyer or something would just get fuzzy past the 3x optical .. but other than that its cool.

What number of megapixels do I need for good quality on photos? It will mostly be used for family type photos(birthdays, family outings.) I don't want to buy more than I need, and somebody I work with told me I don't want any less than 5 megapixels, but I really don't know how much of an "expert" he is. lol

to "keep up with the times" i wouldnt buy less than 5.. there are even affordible 6-7MP cameras out there now.. but honestly, anything 3mp or higher is going to give you great looking 4 x 6" prints. the more MP only gives you larger print options.. if you are looking to do crisp 8 x 10 ot 11 x 17 prints then deffinetly go 5.0 or higher.

comsumer reports ranked olympus, canon, kodak, and nikon as the top four this year, so if you are looking to drop a quick $100-200 and dont mind re-buying in a year or two, go with a 3-4mp, but if you want it to be a worthwhile camera for a good 2-4 years, id go 5.0 or higher, here is a site i go to and i also talk in the forums, good discussions about different models, and plenty of people to help you once you get a camera and have questions (which you will)

Digital Camera Resource Forums

Digital Camera Resource Pages.

they do some testing and demo a few models a month.

If your ok with spending around 300, I got a Kodak DX7630 for around that, it has 6.1 MegaPixals ... here are the details.

I have a 3.1 megapixel Kodak. I don't see any reason why anyone would need anything that takes larger pictures. I always have to re-size my photos (make them smaller) when I post them on the internet anyways. Just make sure you get a camera with optical zoom. Digital zoom is worthless, so don't even pay attention to that.

going from the dx7590 to the 7630 you lose 7x optical zoom, so for sporting events high quality close ups would be better with the dx7590, or the z7590 now.. same damn camera...

for printing only. monitor resolution is 72dpi where printing is atleast 300 dpi depending on your purpose. so pictures show up about 4x bigger on a monitor than they do when you print them. if you never plan to print anything ever.. then you can get a 2mp and be juuuust fine..
