Larry Johnson is a Bengal

Recommended Posts

Brian Leonard is a football player's player. He doesn't do anything except blocking excellent but everything he does is good. I am 100% against this if Brian is benched for even one game. He is too vital to our offense.

If it really is just an insurance policy then cool. Give Ced a week or two off and gear up for the big game. But B.Scott and Leonard need to be active when healthy.

I would hate to see brian and or scott get benched as well.

Especially leonard imo. I love that kid.

LJ can be inactive every game, kinda like Jerome Simpson. And if Benson gets hurt he can hopeufully come in and replace him fairly successfully. And maybe come playoff time if the weather is really bad or something and they think they are better off with two bruisers then a guy like Scott he could dress for scott. But as Marvin said he is just an insurance policy, a luxury we are able to afford by being 7-2.

Christ you're dumb. What a difference a week makes, huh?

Anyway, I agree with Who Dey Forever's original sentiments. Not his new ones.
This is a bad, bad move. The big differences with Ced are as follows:

1.) Ced was 25 when we signed him; Larry is 29 now.
2.) Ced had no history of violent crimes against women; Larry does.
3.) Ced never openly questioned the authority of coaches. Larry has done it twice now.
4.) We are 7-2 and bringing this douche in. Last year was much different.
5.) Why let the media tee off on us again for being a team of thugs? You just know this is going to happen.
1-We aren’t trying to sign our bell cow for the next 5 years. We are only trying to find a quality backup should any of our three starting running backs go down.
2-Larry either straightens out in a hurry, or it’s bye bye. I trust Marvin to keep a tight leash.
3-Ditto above.
4-Yes, 7-2 and needing an insurance back after Benson, Scott, and Leonard. Besides Scott’s huge kick off return performance yesterday shows we have found a top grade kick returner at long last, but this is a speciality with a high incidence of injuries.
5-Who could possibly give a flying fig what the media numbskulls think about anything? Fifty-seven of these wizards thought the Steelers we going to win yesterday, while only 3 thought the Bengals might.

This is a great move. One of the only things I like about Mike Brown is that he truly does not care what anyone thinks about him. He knows that this move will receive criticism, and that if the season turns south this move will probably be blamed (no matter how nonsensical that criticism will be). Yet, he is doing it anyway.

I wonder if they took a look at Edgerin James or gave some thought to bringing Dorsey back.

Did no one see how our offense played this week without Benson?

I know that their run D is awesome and all, but without benson we had pretty much no shot at running the ball. If Benson got hurt bad I dont feel comfortable with just Scott and Leonard.

This is a smart move.

Yeah i feel comfortable with Scott and Leonard the next couple weeks, but this isnt about the next couple weeks, this is in case Benson got hurt and had to miss big games against good teams.

You guys that are saying you disagree with this move, would you honestly would feel comfortable with just Scott and Leonard in a playoff game against Pittsburgh, Baltimore, NE, or Indy?
Cause I sure as hell wouldnt. Nothing against those guys.

Here's why I am concerned about this: We all know that Ced has been awesome here - however, there's no denying that Ced also has a bit of an ego. I am worried that this is going to put a bad taste in Ced's mouth and it could cause problems between the two. We all know LJ has ego issues too....

Just sayin....

This was my initial worry as well. Let's hope Marvin's chat with Ced assured him well enough that he'll continue to be the man.

Well, Marvin has put all his cards on the table for everyone. If he's willing to come here on those terms, then that's a sign right there that he is willing to try and fit in with us.
This pretty much sums it up for me at the moment.

In Marvin I trust has been my motto, even during the down years. No need to change that now.

I think it's a good idea. The combination of him and Benson will pretty much harken back to the days of Jimmy Brooks and Ickey Woods. Since LJ won't be the starter he won't get as many carries and that in turn will help prevent his old ass from wearing down so quickly.

Hey, you guys that are against this, coming to Cincinnati may just be the thing he needs. Ced wasn't exactly a door prize when we took him and look how he's turned out. I like this move. And as I said in another thread concerning this, the coaching staff isn't going to bring a cancer into this locker room. I'm sure Marvin knows what they're doing.

Marvin talked to Ced last week, if ced wasnt ok with it I doubt we would be going ahead with it.

Every football mind that Ive heard so far (jaworski, Mortensen, Golic, etc) have been saying its a great move, the only ones that havent are just media guys like Wilbon and stuff.
Guys that know their football are agreeing with it.

Well, if Ced is a team player, as they all seem to be trying to project the image of "it's a team not an individual", then he'll understand and welcome the addition of someone that can lighten the load, and help extend his career.

If Jim Anderson worked him out and recommended that
we sign him, plus Marvin talked to Benson and LJ
in depth about the signing, then I really don't see
the problem. LJ will only make $37k per game and
could be cut at any time. Jim Anderson knows RBs.
Marvin knows his team.

There's no reason to compare LJ to Ced. LJ isn't coming in to be the featured back. He's an insurance policy if the others get hurt or can't get it done. The money is right, the parameters are right and the risk level is right.

Do you trust Marvin or not?
He needs to get that Payton Manning fella just in case Carson can't go.

We can lend the Colts Orien Harris for a month or so for him.

Larry Johnson expected to sign with Cincinnati Bengals on Tuesday
By Joe Reedy • jreedy@enquirer.com • November 16, 2009

CINCINNATI - The Bengals are about to add some insurance at running back in the form of Larry Johnson.

• Photos: Larry Johnson

The team is expected to announce tomorrow that they have signed the former Kansas City running back as an insurance policy in case of injuries. Johnson arrived in town on Monday where the two sides have agreed to a deal in principle.

ESPN reported earlier in the day that the deal would be worth the prorated league minimum. If that's the case, then Johnson would earn $306,764.43 for the remaining seven games.

"It would have zero affect on Cedric Benson, Bernard Scott or Brian Leonard," coach Marvin Lewis said. "I'm very happy right now with what they're doing and their roles and I want to see Bernard's role continue to expand as it did yesterday."

During his press conference, Lewis quickly addressed the Johnson rumors without being asked. Lewis said that he talked with Johnson last Thursday about visiting the Bengals and his possible role with the team.

The rumors about Johnson coming to Cincinnati really intensified following Sunday's 18-12 win over Pittsburgh when Cedric Benson left during the second quarter with a hip flexor strain.

But both Lewis and Benson said that the injury, which is officially an abductor strain, was not serious and that he could be available for this week's game at Oakland. But Benson is expected to be limited in practices with the final decision being made close to game time.

"I had an opportunity to visit with Cedric, and it doesn't affect him zero," Lewis said. "Obviously this was already underway last week, so Ced in the game had no affect on this thing."

Lewis continued to stress that Johnson's role would be as the fourth running back, which would mainly be scout team work along with special teams. It would also mean that he would be a game day inactive since the Bengals suit up only three running backs.

But if Benson's injury would become more serious or chronic, Johnson would be in line to get a bigger role.

"His role would be a fourth running back and as an opportunity as a backup player on this football team, doing all the things backup players do," Lewis said. "That's work their tails off. In the kicking game and showing looks and so forth.

"He would be an insurance policy if something would happen to our guys where he would have a chance to be active. I can't foresee him being active when he was initially there if this happens. That's what I told him."

Johnson, who turns 30 on Thursday, was released by Kansas City last Monday. He was 75 yards short of passing Priest Holmes as the franchise's all-time leading rusher. In seven games, he had 377 yards on 132 carries and a 2.9 yards per carry average.

But Johnson had repeated off-field incidents during his 6½ seasons there of which he is more remembered than his NFL-record 416 carries in 2006.

Johnson's departure seemed all but certain three weeks ago when he was suspended for tweets that included criticism of Todd Haley's coaching background and anti-gay slurs.

There was also his 2.7 yards per carry average this season and no touchdowns.

"It wasn't any one thing," Haley said at the time of the release. "It was the totality of the situation, even before I was around here."

The Chiefs had to pay him the rest of Johnson's salary, about $2.1 million, since he wasn't claimed off waivers.

"One of the things I told Larry was we would judge him on his future and not on his past. We would judge him from that way forward," Lewis said. "I told Ced that I think you can help him with that. You could validate with that."

Sounds good to me. I'm surprised that LJ is willing to take a 4th place position on a team though. Interesting.

I wonder where the dude got the $37k number?
