Marsch and Bradley are reunited

 by Paul Kennedy, February 7th, 2010 5:48PM

[USA] Jesse Marsch, who played for Bob Bradley at Princeton University and in MLS with three different teams, has retired as a player with MLS's Chivas USA and been named an assistant coach under Bradley on the staff of the U.S. men’s national team. Marsch and Steve Ralston, who moved last week to AC St. Louis of the USSF Division 2, were the last remaining players who had been continuously active in MLS since its launch in 1996.

Marsch, who made two appearances for the U.S. national team in 2001 and 2007 and holds a USSF ‘A’ license, will join the U.S. team for training camp beginning Wednesday at the Home Depot Center.

"I'm excited about this opportunity with U.S. Soccer," said Marsch. "I am looking forward to working hard to help this team be successful in the future."

Marsch made 358 appearances in his 14-year MLS career, winning three MLS Cup titles and four U.S. Open Cup medals.

“I have had the opportunity to work with Jesse for many years,” said Bradley, "and I believe the knowledge and experience he brings will be a great benefit to both the players and the coaching staff."

Bradley recruited Marsch, a native of Racine, Wis., to play for Princeton in 1992. Upon graduation, Marsch joined D.C. United, where Bradley was an assistant under Bruce Arena.

In 1998, Bradley took the reigns of the expansion Chicago Fire and Marsch helped the club complete its historic double, winning both the U.S. Open Cup and the MLS Cup.

When Bradley took over as head coach of Chivas USA prior to the 2006 season, Marsch moved to the club and went on to make 106 appearances in four seasons.

Gulati unanimously re-elected as president

[U.S. SOCCER] Sunil Gulati was unanimously re-elected to a second four-year term as U.S. Soccer president on Saturday at the organization's Annual General Meeting.

Gulati, who rose from the ranks as a youth team administrator to run the U.S. national team program when it took off in the late 1980s, became a key figure in the organization of the 1994 World Cup in the United States and was instrumental in the launch of MLS in 1996, faces the biggest challenge of his soccer career in 2010.

Gulati is the chairman of the USA Bid Committee, which is seeking to bring the World Cup to the United States again in 2018 or 2022.

FIFA's executive committee will picks the 2018 and 2022 hosts in December 2010.

The United States certainly has the stadiums, infrastructure and organization, but it faces a tough race from several non-European bidders, most notably Australia.

Gulati has for many years taught economics at Columbia University.

[AMERICANS ABROAD] Defenders Jay DeMerit and Frankie Simek were both on the winning side in games played Tuesday in the English League Championship.

ENGLAND, LEAGUE CHAMPIONSHIP
Kenny Cooper, sub: 45 minutes (Plymouth, 1-2, at Reading)
Argyle manager Paul Mariner says he's looking to get contributions from Cooper running through the midfield channels for the relegation candidate.

Jay DeMerit, 90 minutes (Watford, 2-0, vs. Bristol City)
Watford has been tough since Martin Taylor arrived on a free transfer from Birmingham and joined DeMerit in the middle of the backline.

Frank Simek, 90 minutes (Sheffield Wednesday, 2-0, vs. Blackpool)
Simek remained in the starting lineup at right back after starting at Nottingham Forest on Saturday.

Hopefully Kenny starts netting some goals. I would hate to see him lose a spot to SA to Casey or Ching.
Ching...ugh...Bradley has a man-crush on Ching. I'm afraid he's on the 23 no matter what. Hope he doesn't see the field. Kind of like[Coach] Bradley and [his crush on] Bornstein, he gets fixated on a couple players and they make the lineup no matter how bad they look in CONCACAF qualifying. I'm sorry but if you suck against Costa Rica, Honduras, El Salvador, etc. then the Spains, Germanys, Brazils and even Englands of the world will own you.

Best case scenario is the Jozy gets some experience and confidence in England, CD makes the incredible recovery, add a guy like Cooper who seems to score goals when he gets a cap and with LD and Deuce on the roster you have other options at forward if needed.

USA's hopes depend on Yanks abroad

[WORLD CUP COUNTDOWN] More so than previous World Cup teams, the USA's first team in South Africa this summer will consist almost entirely of foreign-based players.

You only need to have seen the U.S. performance against Honduras in January to realize that it's going nowhere with the core of MLS players who fell to the Catrachos, 3-1.

Only one MLS player from that game, Jonathan Bornstein, would be projected to be the first 14 for the World Cup opener if everyone was healthy -- down from the nine MLS players who beat Portugal in the 2002 opener and five who fell to the Czech Republic four years ago.

Bruce Arena took 12 foreign-based players to the World Cup in 2002 and 2006. The number of Yanks abroad headed to the World Cup could reach 18 or 19 in 2010.

A rash of injuries to foreign-based players has raised alarm bells in recent weeks about the USA's chances at the World Cup. On the positive side, several key players are playing the best soccer of their club careers.

In particular, Landon Donovan has been outstanding since joining Everton on loan. Too outstanding, probably.

Any chance England will underestimate the 27-year-old attacker has been shot by Donovan's string of solid performances for Everton. After three failed stays in Europe, he has finally achieved the respect he yearned.

It was a coincidence that Donovan joined the Toffees just as they hit their best patch of the season.

But Donovan, playing a free role in midfield like he has done for the USA in the last year, has been a key contributor for Everton in the six EPL games he has played -- wins over Manchester City, Sunderland, Wigan and Chelsea on Wednesday, a tie with Arsenal in his debut and a lone loss to Merseyside rival Liverpool.

Against Chelsea, Donovan assisted on Louis Saha's first goal and was taken down for a penalty that Saha failed to convert. England defenders John Terry and Ashley Cole will certainly vouch for Donovan's abilities.

"That was Landon's best game for us," Everton manager David Moyes said afterward. "But I don't think we'll be able to keep him when his three-month loan expires, unfortunately."

Donovan's reversal of fortune mirrors that of Jozy Altidore, who after a poor first season in Spain and a slow start with Hull City in the EPL has come on strong this winter.

When he sat out two games for compassionate leave following the earthquake that struck his parents' native Haiti, it looked like Altidore, scoreless in his first 14 EPL games, could have been in for another lost season, but he has also been excellent in recent weeks.

Altidore has been real handful for opposing defenders -- drawing a pair of yellow cards in consecutive games against Chelsea and Manchester City. Hull's 1-0 loss at Blackburn on Wednesday was its first defeat since Altidore returned to the lineup.

Then there's U.S. captain, Carlos Bocanegra, who has regained his starting job at French club Rennes. When the January transfer window opened, Bocanegra was mired on the Rennes bench and looked set to join relegation candidate St. Etienne on loan.

A month later, Bocanegra is still at Rennes but back in the starting lineup. Rennes played its best game of the season in a 4-2 win over league leader Bordeaux on Saturday. While Bordeaux's Yoan Gouffran gave Bocanegra fits, the California had one his best games of the season contributing to the Rennes attack.

If you'd have told Bob Bradley at the beginning of January that Donovan and Altidore would flourish and Bocanegra would regain his form, he'd have settled for that on the U.S. abroad front.

It might have been just enough to keep him from fainting if you also told him that Clint Dempsey would do his knee, DaMarcus Beasley and Maurice Edu would return to the disabled list at Rangers and injuries would set back new European arrivals Ricardo Clark and Stuart Holden,

In the last year, the USA's problem area has been its back four. Now it's the front six, where the primary candidates to join Donovan, Altidore and Michael Bradley in the starting lineup on June 12 against England are all injured (Charlie Davies, Dempsey, Beasley and Edu) or suffering from a serious lack of match fitness (Clark and Holden).

Dempsey and Davies, who combined for four of the seven goals in the USA's run to the final at the Confederations Cup team, are in a race against the clock to be fit for the World Cup.

Beasley and Edu both were on the comeback trail at Rangers when they reinjured themselves. Beasley's injury, described by Rangers manager Walter Smith as "an awkward injury anyway at the top of his thigh" is the most worrying. What Beasley hoped to be a three-week layoff has already extended another month.

The good news for Clark and Holden is that they found (short-term) homes in Europe -- never a foregone conclusion -- after leaving the Houston Dynamo as free transfers. The bad news is that Holden and Clark arrived at Bolton Wanderers and Eintracht Frankfurt, respectively, after layoffs of six weeks or longer and both were immediately injured.

Both risk running out of time to regain their form before the end of the European season and failing to make enough of an impression to return to their clubs next season.

(The other injured attacker abroad is Jose Francisco Torres, whose hamstring injury came just as he regained his starting job at Pachuca in Mexico. If the injury keeps him out of the El Salvador game on Feb. 24 and the Netherlands game on March 3, it will be a major blow for the USA, which could use another midfielder with the different dimensions Torres brings.)

We'll have a better idea where the U.S. World Cup hopes stand in the next month. Will Davies return to training at Sochaux? Will Oguchi Onyewu, the key injured American defender, get a chance at Milan when he's healthy again?

The best-case scenario is that four of five of the injured Americans abroad are ready to go by mid-March and get two solid months of playing time -- enough time for them to find their form but still short enough to be fresh for the World Cup.

That and nothing happens to Donovan or Altidore in the meantime.

[AMERICANS ABROAD] Freddy Adu made a rare start in a competitive game and only his third start in more than two years when he started for Aris in its 1-1 tie with Xanthi in the Greek Cup on Wednesday.

The start was the first for Adu, who played 67 minutes, since joining Aris in January on loan from Benfica.

He started only once for Belenenses last fall before it returned him to its Lisbon rival, Benfica.

Adu made only one start last season for French club Monaco, lasting 70 minutes in its 1-0 loss to Paris St. Germain in the French Cup.

In Wednesday's Greek Cup game, American teammate Eddie Johnson was a late substitute. The teams will play a replay next week
After Landon Donovan helped Everton upset EPL leader Chelsea, 2-1, the American on loan from L.A. received rave reviews from the British media. Donovan, who set up a goal with a corner kick and drew a penalty kick, was The Sun's 'Star Man' (man of the match) with a rating of 8 on a scale of 1-10. (Even though Louis Saha scored both goals.)

"Landon Donovan frequently [got] the better of Ashley Cole," The Independent pointed out, while noting that Everton appears not to be able to extend Donovan's loan deal past the 10 weeks. Everton has suffered just one loss in the six Premier League games Donovan played in, winning five and tying once. The Toffees are in ninth place.

The Telegraph reported that Cole "limped out of the game following a robust challenge by Donovan, who had spent almost an hour tormenting the England fullback." (Cole and Donovan may meet again in their 2010 World Cup opener.) The Telegraph also noted that "Landon Donovan and [Diniyar] Bilyaletdinov stretched the game and Chelsea’s back four.

If Landon goes back to the MLS I'm going to pull my hair out. Make it happen Everton!

How far has Freddy fallen off the map..jeez. Come on Freddy.

Brad Friedel is on fire in goal. He might be our best goalie right now..even though Tim is one of my favorite players.

Still too far away. I wish time we go faster.

I agree that LD should stay in England. He's playing great, the British press seems to rooting for him and going back to the MLS does nothing for him. But I don't know the particulars of how Everton could make a deal that MLS would agree to in losing a marquee player. That might be tough.

[WORLD CUP COUNTDOWN] Landon Donovan's meeting with Ashley Cole in Wednesday's Everton-Chelsea may have been his last. Donovan's challenge with Cole resulted in the England left back suffering a fractured ankle that may keep him out of the rest of the Premier League season and jeopardize his chances of playing in the World Cup.

Chelsea confirmed the fracture that will keep Cole out of action for three months. He suffered the injury in the 57th minute when he and Donovan kicked the ball at the same time.

[AMERICANS ABROAD] Midfielder Jose Francisco Torres returned to action with Pachuca on Sunday and came on after halftime to score on a free kick the winning goal in a spectacular 5-3 win at Puebla.

Torres injured his right hamstring playing for Pachuca against Queretaro but played the next week against Atlanta before having to come off in the second half of the 5-1 Pachuca win.

The injury came at an inopportune time for Torres, who was playing well for Pachuca since regaining a spot in the starting lineup.

He impressed in his most recent outing for the USA, the final World Cup qualifier against Costa Rica, but is still on the bubble for the World Cup team.

His return means he could be called up for the midweek friendly against El Salvador on Feb. 24 in Tampa.

Torres scored and made it 4-3 for Pachuca with a free kick in the 84th minute.

Landon Donovan loan timed perfectly

By Ridge Mahoney

There's been a bit of ballyhoo the past few days about Landon Donovan taking a big gamble by going to Everton on loan.

Uh, I beg to differ. Had he gone over with his MLS contract expired, as many players have done, that would be a gamble. And had he not signed a new deal and been entering the first of two option years, well, then maybe he could have said to be gambling somewhat, though by its very nature a loan deal is a test period, a trial run so all parties concerned can sample the experience, with a return to the status quo guaranteed.

As it is, with a new four-year contract tucked away at a salary of $2 million per year, and the fall-back of returning to MLS, can it be said he’s really gambling at all? Leaving the USA for Bayer Leverkusen at age 17, now that was a gamble, especially for Donovan, who spent much of his childhood without his father and jumped right into a new climate and culture, an environment that toughened and hardened him even if it has taken a few years for that steel to emerge.

Sometimes players, and people, need desperate conditions to survive and excel. If there’s no alternative, one choice only, the only chance is to make the best of it and scrap and fight and hope for good things to happen. But not everybody flourishes in those conditions; there are times when security can form a solid enough foundation that encourages optimum performance.

This is the case for Donovan, whose talent and skill has been vividly evident for the past decade. Eight years ago, while coaching Donovan in San Jose, Coach Frank Yallop – who played in England’s top flight as well as for Canada -- said, “I can see him in the Premier League. I really can.”

What Yallop also said a few years later was, “There were times when I had to sit Landon. He didn’t like it, but he understood it.” Those lessons learned, and his ability, are coming to the fore as he approaches his 28th birthday (in March) and nears the peak of his powers.

For Everton, Donovan is not the go-to guy as he so often is for the Galaxy and the US. national team. He’s playing a complementary role, working in a viable system devised by a sharp manager and operated by good players. While fans and journalists can rave, justifiably, about his corner kicks that lead to goals and passes that set up chances, and touches that create penalty kicks, coaches around England and Europe will note his simple touches to retain possession and positioning and movement off the ball, as well as the scything runs and well-hit set plays.

The Premier League may or may not be a good fit for his abilities, but more important is his performances fitting into a good team in a good league. Those elements can transcend borders, and so his options may not be limited to England after the World Cup.

If a mid-level Spanish team or one of the Premier League Big Four enter the bidding, Everton may have some hard decisions to make and some hard cash to cough up. Ironically, with each good game he plays, his price goes up, unless there’s a pre-negotiated transfer price written into the loan agreement, which isn’t likely.

His aborted attempts with Leverkusen (the second time around) and Bayern Munich are already fading with each solid game he turns in for the Toffees. The English press is starting to believe, and among the most strident critics of his previous forays into Europe have been the Brits, we should point out. One professional acquaintance of mine summed this loan up by saying, “Landon Donovan: About f****** time!”

Yet the time has to be right for the person involved, not imposed by any external influence.

Whether Donovan goes back to Everton or another foreign club after the World Cup or stays with the Galaxy, he’s taken this move at the right point in his life. The loan might still end badly, with an injury or a run of poor games, and to those of us who’ve seen him for the past 10 years he hasn’t proved anything about his talent or even his temperament that we didn't know. If Donovan puts his mind to something, it usually gets done, and done well if not brilliantly.

If he’s proved this to himself, not much else matters.

Glasgow Daily Record

DaMarcus Beasley admits he needs to take better care of himself if he is to avoid recurring injuries that have threatened his chances of returning to the World Cup for a third time. The latest: a thigh sprain that kept him out of action for six weeks.

Beasley, who played the first half of Rangers' 3-0 win over Hibernian on Saturday, says U.S. coach Bob Bradley told him a place on the World Cup team is far from secure. "He got out a lot of things that needed to be said -- and we are on the same page about what is required before the summer," said Beasley. "Every coach wants his players to be playing and I'm not guaranteed a spot for the World Cup. My job is to put myself in the window by playing regularly and hope he decides to pick me."

Beasley admitted he's never suffered injuries like he's had at Rangers. "If it's not my hamstrings, it's my knee, my thigh or my ankle. The last year has made me realize I need to start taking care of myself better. All my problems have been muscle injuries from quick movements. So there are maybe extra things I could be doing to strengthen those muscles to avoid strains."

[AMERICANS ABROAD] It's a good thing the midfield is supposed to be the deepest part of the U.S. national team. Yet another midfielder, Benny Feilhaber, injured himself this winter, hurting ankle in training with Danish club AGF Aarhus on Monday. Pending the results of the scan on his ankle, Feilhaber's coach, Erik Rasmussen, said the U.S. midfielder could be out up to 14 days.

Feilhaber is the seventh U.S. midfielder based abroad to be injured this winter. Indeed, every key U.S. midfielder except Michael Bradley and Landon Donovan in Europe and Robbie Rogers in MLS has been injured.

On the positive side, DaMarcus Beasley (Rangers) and Jose Francisco Torres (Pachuca) returned to action over the weekend, and Stuart Holden suited up with the Bolton first team for the first time.

U.S. INJURIES:
-- Dec. 26: DaMarcus Beasley (Glasgow Rangers) thigh;
-- Mid-January: Stuart Holden (Bolton Wanderers) thigh;
-- Jan. 19: Clint Dempsey (Fulham) knee;
-- Jan. 22: Maurice Edu (Glasgow Rangers) ankle;
-- Jan. 31 Steve Cherundolo (Hannover) shoulder;
-- Feb. 3: Ricardo Clark (Eintracht Frankfurt) calf.

Goodson recalled from Norway

 February 16th, 2010 8:05PM

[USA] Clarence Goodson, whose goal was a rare bright spot in last month's 3-1 loss to Honduras and who is pushing for what would be the fourth center back spot on the national team for the 2010 World Cup, has been given permission by his Norwegian club IK Start to join the U.S. national team in training for next Wednesday's friendly against El Salvador in Tampa (TV: ESPN Classic, TeleFutura, live, 7 p.m. ET).

Goodson looks to be battling with Chad Marshall for the fourth spot behind Oguchi Onyewu (if healthy), Carlos Bocanegra and Jay DeMerit.

The other 23 players at the training camp at the Home Depot Center are comprised entirely of domestic-based players.

Kansas City goalkeeper Kevin Hartman joined the team last week after Zach Thornton suffered a hip flexor strain.

U.S. Roster:
GOALKEEPERS (4): Kevin Hartman (Kansas City Wizards), Troy Perkins (D.C. United), Nick Rimando (Real Salt Lake), Zach Thornton (Chivas USA)
DEFENDERS (7): Jonathan Bornstein (Chivas USA), Omar Gonzalez (Los Angeles Galaxy), Clarence Goodson (IK Start), Chad Marshall (Columbus Crew), Michael Orozco (Philadelphia Union), Heath Pearce (FC Dallas), Marvell Wynne (Toronto FC)
MIDFIELDERS (9): Kyle Beckerman (Real Salt Lake), Geoff Cameron (Houston Dynamo), Brad Davis (Houston Dynamo), Brad Evans (Seattle Sounders), Eddie Gaven (Columbus Crew), Sacha Kljestan (Chivas USA), Dax McCarty (FC Dallas), Chris Pontius (D.C. United), Robbie Rogers (Columbus Crew)

AARHUS DIVULGE FEILHABER X-RAY RESULTS

Arch Bell - Tuesday, February 16, 2010

After injuring his ankle yesterday during training, results show that Aarhus midfielder Benny Feilhaber has cartilage damage and will be rested before re-examination.

The club initially tabbed the injury a severe sprain with the expectation that Feilhaber would miss a couple weeks.

However after a full review of yesterday's test results, doctors at the Danish club conclude that the timeline for the US International's return is still unknown.

"Specialists have now reviewed the images that were conducted yesterday and the conclusion is that Benny has a cartilage injury in his ankle," said AGF press officer Christian Haarsløv to YA.

Haarsløv added that the former UCLA standout will be rested for the next week and a half and will then undergo another evaluation by team doctors.

"Initially, he will be rested for 10 days. Then his ankle will be scanned again and the medical staff will evaluate the situation," he concluded.

The injury all but rules out Feilhaber for the US national team international friendly versus Holland on March 3rd.

The Brazilian-born midfielder will hope to return to Superliga action in time for the re-start of the Danish season on March 7th.
USA to get sendoff against Czech Republic and Turkey

 February 17th, 2010 7:19PM

[DATEBOOK] The USA will face 2006 World Cup opponent Czech Republic and Turkey in its two final warmup matches before heading to South Africa for the World Cup. The Czech Republic game will be played May 25 at a site to be announced -- Rentschler Field in East Hartford, Conn., has been mentioned as a possible venue -- while the Turkey game will be played May 29 at Philadelphia's Lincoln Financial Field.

These games will follow the beginning of the final phase of training for the World Cup.

The European league season ends on May 16.

“We are very pleased to get two quality opponents in the Czech Republic and Turkey in preparation for the World Cup,” said U.S. coach Bob Bradley. “These games will provide a great opportunity to fine tune our plans for the matches in South Africa and test ourselves against some of the better teams in Europe."

The USA has never beaten either the Czech Republic or Turkey.

The USA faced the Czech Republic (formerly Czechoslovakia) twice at the World Cup, losing 5-1 in the opening game in 1990 and 3-0 in the 2006 opener.

The last USA-Turkey meeting took place in 2003 when the Turks prevailed 2-1 at the Confederations Cup in Lyons, France.
